Sleeping With The CEO
Chapter 137: Waiting Game

Chapter 137: Waiting Game

For a while, the steady stream of customers coming into and going out of the diner had been enough to keep Emily busy, to keep her mind off the impending arrival of one Derek Haven. But now, it had come the time of night where there was nobody at the diner but her and Ben, the cook.

And with all of the cleaning up done, and the tables and chairs set to rights, Emily had nothing to do.

And so with nothing to keep her preoccupied, she was seated instead of standing like usual. Not only had she taken a seat, she had taken a seat that afforded her a view of the front door. And she had been occasionally looking through it from time to time. Hoping to see Derek’s familiar figure making its way to the diner, or at least his car, out there somewhere, so that she knew for a fact that he was coming.

Emily was embarrassed on her own behalf. She felt like a parent waiting in the dead of night. Ready to catch their misbehaving teenager who had snuck out to go to a party. But despite the embarrassment, Emily could not find it in herself to move. She had to know when he finally came so that she could make sure to look as menacing as possible.

But so far there was nothing. There was neither hide nor hair of him, and no matter how hard she squinted into the darkness outside, Derek did not materialize. And his lack of appearance was making Emily begin to doubt. It was hard to resist the urge to go outside and check if he was not already there, just parked a bit further away.

The longer Emily waited, the more her doubt was slowly replaced by anger.

How dare he! He had called saying that he would be coming by, to explain everything. And now he is making me wait. Shaking her head to clear the irrational anger, Emily stood up, grabbing a cloth as she began wiping down furniture that did not need to be wiped down at all.

She had to get herself under control. If she was already angry before he even arrived, then there was a huge chance that by the time he walked through those doors, she would be ready to fight and not in a listening mood. That was no way to resolve things, and Emily wanted this matter resolved. If there was one person who deserved a second chance, it was Derek Haven. In all of her time knowing him, he had never given her a reason to doubt his character. She hoped that whatever it is that he had to say restored her faith in him.

The key thing was to get clarification. And she could not get that, by punching, slapping, or kicking him the first chance she got.

So she had to hold it back. Besides, she had never been a violent person, and she did not like the fact that she had been violent with Derek in the first place, even if he had insulted her. But now she was second-guessing that decision. What if he had not been trying to insult her? What if his request for sleeping with her was something totally innocent?

She scoffed, please, as if asking to sleep with somebody could be innocent. She had heard of people making excuses for others, but this was ridiculous. The man had flat out come out and told her, ’sleep with me’. There was no way to get that wrong. Maybe when he finally came.

He would tell her that he was tired and had meant the words for someone else. That was the only thing that she could think of, that made sense. But even as she thought it, her heart thudded in a painful way. Why was she hurting over Derek Haven’s love life? It was not like she was part of it.

Great.

Now her mind was wandering over to topics that had nothing to do with her. She looked out at the door, hoping that Derek came and solved things before they got out of hand but there was still no sign of him.

At this rate her mind would go completely off the rails, and she would start imagining some wild stuff. Like him getting married somewhere. With her as the one planning the honeymoon for him and some heiress, or maybe even a princess. She’d had to fend off quite a few of those during her time as his PA, acting as a shield between him and various women. Maybe with her gone, one of them had finally sunk their claws into him, and now he wanted Emily’s help, in setting up their nuptials.

The thought made absolutely no sense, and Emily had no idea how she had gone from him wanting to sleep with her to thinking of him getting married to another woman. But it calmed her. It hurt her heart a little but it did not make her mad. So she stuck with it, thinking of all the random things that she would have to be running around preparing, while Derek and his bride-to-be just rehearsed their lines, checked and whatever it was that super rich people did when they were getting married. Did they even suffer through the stresses of wedding planning? Or did they have other people to do that for them? Anyway, why would she be there? She wasn’t a wedding planner.

Her mind getting away from her, Emily actually had to go to the bathroom and splash a bit of water on her face. Clearly things were out of hand. She had been obsessing over Derek’s little slip up for way too long. If she was somehow making leaps between his verbal faux pas, and him getting married.

She hoped that he showed up soon, otherwise the next time she saw him she would be so deep into her mind. She would be imagining him with a horde of little Derek Havens running around while she was somehow roped into being the nanny.
