Chapter 132: What Went Wrong?
Derek had received quite a few slaps over the years. Spoiled rich women tended to be very quick when it came to slapping people. And for people who never wanted to do anything themselves, they were often very enthusiastic when it came to being violent.
Needless to say, Derek had gotten quite good at dodging slaps and vases too. But with all the slaps that he had been dodging.
He had never once expected to have a slap coming his way, originating from one Emily Molson. She was the last person he had ever expected to slap him. But she had done it. No pausing, no hesitation. She had just raised her hand and struck. And as Derek lay in his bed on Saturday morning thinking over what had happened, he still could not come up with a plausible reason.
Why?
Why had she done it? What had come over her all of a sudden? Had something set her off? Or perhaps she’d had an episode, where she mistook him for someone else. Someone in need of a slap. Derek shook his head, no, that could not be it. He had just been talking.
Rambling after apologizing to her about what he had done. And it had seemed as though she were listening, really listening and actually considering forgiving him and coming back. But then out of nowhere, she had just changed. All of her softness, leaving her and just leaving behind this hard, difficult person who was glaring daggers at him, and then she had just slapped him out of nowhere.
What had he said or done that had earned him a slap like that out of the blue?
But try as he might, Derek could not find a single thing that could have set her off like that. He had not been rude. In fact, he had been there to apologize and he had apologized. He knew that she was not happy with him, but still... to slap him! What was it?
Was she angry that after the apology he had asked her to come back without even offering her any compensation? But that did not seem like the right answer. Emily was not one to be swayed by money, that much he knew. Many people had tried to offer her money in exchange for her to spy on him in the past.
But each time she had refused, and sometimes she had not even told him. Derek had just found out on his own and pretended like he did not know, the two of them going about their days. So whatever it was that Emily had been angry enough about to slap him, it was not money. But what could it be? He had apologized and actually meant it. Did she get so angry because she thought that he had been giving a fake apology ? But he had been telling the truth. He truly was sorry. So what had set her off?
He had asked her to come back and he had asked if they could sleep together once more just so he could see if she was really the cure for his insomnia. What was he missing? What had gone wrong then? Derek had no idea what it was that had made things fall apart.
He’d had no idea when he had left the diner, clutching his cheek. Luckily, the beard had taken most of the sting out of the slap, but the shock had still been enough to leave him stunned. In fact, on his drive home, he had been checking on the area repeatedly. Either stealing glances in the mirror or driving with one hand so that he could reach up and touch it. And now that he was on his bed he was still touching the area of the slap. The frequent touches had nothing to do with pain, at least not the physical kind. Something deep in Derek’s chest hurt.
Emily had been his last chance. She was the only thing that he could think of that could have possibly been the reason that he had been able to sleep that time when he had been in that creepy motel. All he needed to do was to sleep with her again so that he could see if she was really his cure. But she did not seem to be having it at all.
In fact, she did not seem keen to ever see him again. What was he going to do now? Should he just throw in the towel, give up and live a life depending on sleeping pills that made him dumber than a brick? Should he just let it all go and allow himself to continue on with his miserable existence for however long hwe would be able to hold out?
No.
That was not the life that Derek wanted for himself. He wanted, better. In fact he deserved better. He had as much of a right to a good night’s rest as evryone else did. But Emily had been his last chance. Without her, he had no idea what he was going to do. Did he dare risk going back? Were Saturday nights at the diner too busy for him to try and show up?
But he had to do something. Even if this time she might pour boiling water on him, he had to go see her again. It was Saturday, and pretty soon it would be Monday. And this time, if he dared to come up with another lie to try and extend her leave, people would start to get even more suspicious.
He had to see her, even if it earned him as slap. Maybe she would slap the same cheek or maybe she would go for the other one. But either way, Derek had to face her and clear up their misunderstanding if indeed it was a misunderstanding. He had to know what had gone on.
He had to know what it was that he had done wrong and he would gladly apologize for it again.
