Chapter 45: Into the Webs Again
Jax needed to know just how much stronger the monsters of the forest were compared to his current level of strength.
He had to make sure that he wasn’t going to kill himself, so the first day in the Cobweb Forest for him was mostly just testing out the strength and speed of the various beasts, along with how long it would normally take to kill them and what he had to be careful of.
He had read the monster book again, and it mentioned many things about the beasts. And yet, he couldn’t entirely rely on it. Reality often chose to surprise one when they least expected it.
The Giant Wolf was fast, and its bite was strong. Its claw attacks were also quick, with few ways to dodge.
It was the first beast Jax noticed upon coming to the forest, so he placed the burning torch on the ground and slowly moved closer to the beast, hoping it wouldn’t notice him.
However, when he got close, the beast most certainly noticed him.
The beast lunged for him at once, and when it came closer than 25 feet, Jax instantly used his spell.
Divine Threads.
He targeted the wolf’s legs first, trying to stop it. Its legs were instantly wrapped in threads, causing it to stumble onto the ground. However, it got back up and started running toward him again, getting out of its constriction.
Jax sighed. He used the spell again and dodged as the wolf went crashing past him. He quickly turned and lifted his axe, chopping down on its back with a heavy hand.
The wolf didn’t die from that hit. It whimpered in pain and growled as it turned around, wanting to kill Jax. Jax pulled the axe up and swung it down again, hacking through its neck this time.
The monster glowed softly, and Jax heard the words in his ears. Three Opal stones floated in front of him, which he took.
"Alright, I can defeat the wolf with somewhat ease," Jax said as he sat down and brought out his daggers to dismantle the corpse.
"That was rather easy too," Gemma said. "But your spell didn’t work there once."
"It worked perfectly," Jax said. "It’s just me who failed."
When Jax used the spell on a target, the loops of threads he created were sized precisely to wrap around everything within his line of sight. When the wolf was in motion, its limbs were at different distances from one another.
So unless Jax timed it correctly, sometimes he would wrap its legs when they were farther apart. When the wolf closed its legs, the constricting threads would come loose, allowing the wolf to get out of them.
"I need to get my timing better," Jax said. "But even without that, I’m capable of killing the wolf, it seems. My spell is really handy against these monsters, isn’t it?"
"Against monsters without spells to fight back with, yes. But you’ll soon be in trouble if you rely entirely on letting them get close before using your spell. You’ll have to start doing something else."
Jax paused. "There is literally nothing else I can do. I have just this one spell, remember?"
Gemma didn’t say anything, letting him think about it.
Jax frowned. Was there something else he could do?
’Of course she won’t tell me,’ Jax thought. ’If I ask, she’ll make some excuse about how she can’t make things easy for me.’
Jax continued dismantling for a while before he got what he needed and left the area. He made his way through the forest, finding the next beast to fight. He hoped it wouldn’t be another wolf he found.
Today’s hunt was for training more than anything else, after all.
Jax found the beasts he was searching for one after another. He found the Silkworm first, which was perhaps the easiest beast to get rid of. So long as he had fire, it was of no threat to him at all.
The spiders were a little trickier to kill. Not only were they quite agile, but they could drag themselves away with many of their other pairs of legs that Jax usually wouldn’t be able to use his spell on due to how far apart they were.
They also tended to get onto trees and come down hanging by their webs to bite people. One had to always be careful when they ran away.
Jax didn’t find a Silk Moth on account of them being rather rare, but if he did find one, he knew he could defeat it. He had done it while he had been a mere 1-Star Opal stage sorcerer with no spells.
He did not fear the moth.
Finally, the most dangerous of the monsters in the forest, outside of the boss and the elites, showed its face to Jax.
The Giant Black Bear.
Jax had defeated this monster once before, but back then, he had to use his spell and the power of an entire Opal stone to constrict it.
If he wanted to fight it properly this time, he couldn’t waste his Navi like that. He needed to conserve as much as he could to learn to use his spells as efficiently as possible.
The bear turned to look at him when it saw Jax arrive.
Jax looked at the beast and felt a hint of anticipation grow within him. "Alright, big guy. Let’s see how scary you are when I am at the same stage as you."
The giant bear stood, nearly triple Jax’s height, and lunged toward him.
Jax dodged to the side, using his spell. He made five threads, with as high a quality as he could, and used its neutral variety. The threads appeared wrapped around the bear’s four limbs.
The bear seemed to notice it and used just a bit of its force to tear through them.
Jax couldn’t help but smile at the sight of it. ’Even five threads aren’t strong enough to stop you, huh?’ he thought. ’Let’s see how many I really need.’
