Frodina had prepared that field with the intention of planting a more difficult crop to grow there, and now that she had lost those seeds, it did not feel right to repurpose that field for more common crops. So instead, she let it be while she searched for a new rare fruit.
「I see…」
The story behind that field had been a bit more intricate than Mira had expected, so coupled with a bit of surprise, Mira also found it entertaining to learn a bit more about how the sisters lived there.
She also realized that she had something that would be perfect for Frodina.
「This reminds me, why don’t you try growing some of these?」
Saying that, she took out various seeds, which she had obtained in the Ancient Underground City when she was looking for Soul Howl.
There were many plant nurseries amongst the facilities still standing from that mysterious ancient civilization, many cultivating pure breeds of rare fruits. Some of them had nearly unbearable flavors, but others were incredibly delicious. Mira had gathered various fruits from there, carefully saving the seeds from the ones she ate, especially those she found most delicious and potentially superior to whichever fruits Frodina had initially planned to plant.
「All things considered, these will likely take a lot more effort to grow. But I’m sure that’s going to be far more fulfilling than leaving this field barren, won’t it?」
Those seeds had come from ancient automated facilities far underground, so it was going to be a challenge to cultivate them in such a distant place. It was hard to know if they would even sprout in such a different environment. But Frodina was not intimidated at all, instead looking with excitement at the seeds Mira was holding out, asking, 「Are you sure I can take them?!」
「Of course, they’re all yours.」
Mira nodded, and Frodina knelt to thank her profusely before carefully taking the seeds and placing them in her bag.
「Ah, take these too.」
Having only the seeds could be a bit confusing, so Mira decided to also give her some of the fruits themselves.
Frodina thanked her again, and then looked at the fruits with curiosity, already wondering what the plants would look like, and then glancing across the empty field with excitement.
The palace’s kitchen was around six tatami mats large, annexed to the dining hall by a counter. It was still early in the morning, so there was no one on that side.
But in the kitchen, Frodina had already started preparing breakfast, using more ingredients than usual since Mira and Bruce were joining them, making it a total of nine people including the sisters. As she was the only cook, she really looked like a warrior fighting through the battlefield of a kitchen.
There was one more person there now, standing next to Frodina, knife in hand. It was Mira, who had taken charge over dispatching the tomatoes so their plan would work. At least it was nothing complicated, and she just needed to cut the tomatoes in the way Frodina had shown her.
「Is this good?」
She was still not used to cooking, so her movements were rather clumsy. Luckily, she just needed to make some simple cuts, and after some effort, she was done with all the tomatoes.
「That’s perfect, Master. Thank you for helping me.」
While the tomato pieces were rather irregular in size and shape, Frodina took the bowl, saying they were good enough. After that, Frodina would do everything on her own, and Mira focused on something else she wanted to do.
She watched attentively to every motion Frodina made while cooking. She still had plenty of food packed to last her a while, but she also believed that camping and cooking out in the wilderness was also part of adventures. Because of that, she had also asked Frodina to teach her to cook.
「If you boil these for too long they lose their taste, so you have to be careful…」
「You have to regulate the heat according to the size of the veggies…」
「Also watch out when skimming the foam on top, the flavor can get diluted if you take away too much…」
Frodina was moving rapidly, and at first glance, it seemed like she was making a random mess, but as she explained what she was doing or what to watch out for, it was clear that there was actual intention behind everything. She did not even seem to be breaking a sweat from all that, likely because she was also delighted to be able to teach her Master like that.
「Hmm… I follow, I follow…」
Mira was doing her best to write down notes as Frodina rapidly explained everything she was doing.
At first, Mira had thought she could help Frodina cook and learn at the same time, but now that she saw how briskly Frodina moved, Mira believed she would only get in the way and decided to learn from a distance, watching how Frodina cooked various things at the same time.
(I’m not really sure if this is really the best way to learn…)
Frodina had many years of experience cooking, moving almost by instinct and making complicated things seem easy. There was a lot she was doing that remained unseen, and Mira could not help but wonder how many years or even decades it would take to reach that level of skill.
At least, there were some tips or techniques that were simple enough for her to learn now, and she focused on writing that down.
「Ohh it’s finally happening!」
The counter was becoming populated by bowls of prepped ingredients, and soon, Frodina had her main tomato dish ready. She then moved on to work on Mira’s request, bringing a loaf of bread fresh out of the oven, which would become french toast.
That usually meant making an egg wash that included milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and some other ingredients. Then slices of bread would be soaked in it and fried. At least that was the understanding Mira had of french toast, and she was curious to see how Frodina would make it.
The ingredient Frodina had previously mentioned made its entrance, the Uthofnir Egg. It was roughly the size of a child’s head, and seemed to be glowing softly.
(Can we really eat that? It looks like some holy object…)
That egg looked like it would eventually give birth to some divine entity, making Mira hesitate. But Frodina casually cracked it open, and soon it was turned into the egg wash for french toast.
All that was left was to soak the bread in it and fry it. Mira decided to stop worrying about the egg and focused on watching how the french toast would come out, but things did not go the way she had expected.
For some reason, Frodina began tearing apart the fresh bread, even grinding some pieces into bread crumbs
That was so far apart from the general idea Mira had that she began to get worried. Still she kept quiet, anxiously watching the professional do the work.
The bread shreds and crumbs quickly absorbed all the egg wash when Frodina mixed them.
Then she took a square frying pan and poured the bread and eggs into it to fry, almost like an omelette. She even dropped in small pieces of cheese for small surprise bites.
(Ohhh! That’s impressive…it actually turned into french toast!)
That process was completely unknown to Mira, but she watched how slices of french toast came out one after another from the pan. At the same time she began to think about it all, and realized the egg wash would only coat the outer bread surface with the regular method, but Frodina’s made it permeate through all of it, creating a texture closer to pudding in the middle.
