Mira and Frodina finished planning how they would fix Alfina’s aversion to tomatoes, and then proceeded further into the garden.
「Ohh… These fields look impressive as well.」
Further in, there were various fields. There were at least ten of them, each roughly six tatami mats in size, growing various vegetables and fruits. Frodina explained that at first, she just tried growing some produce in the garden, and it slowly expanded in size, and before she realized, it had become that big.
There were spinach, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, lettuce, and various other common vegetables growing there, as well as a few smaller fruits like strawberries or blueberries.
Frodina also mentioned that there were no wild animals that could sneak in, but from time to time, she would find some of the produce missing. And whoever did that would always ignore all the vegetables and only take the fruits. That culprit was also incredibly sneaky, no matter how many traps and indicators she set, there was never any trace of the thief.
Mira took another look around, and noticed the presence of various defensive spells all over the fields, in a way that was almost excessive.
But Frodina seemed to almost enjoy that game of cat and mouse, waiting for the day when she would catch the culprit and bring whoever it was to justice with Alfina.
(Now that I think about it, I think this is the first time I’m looking so attentively to how vegetables grow.)
Mira was currently picking tomatoes from the field, which would then be used in Frodina’s special tomato dish. She was trying to be as attentive as possible, trying to follow all the marks of ripeness Frodina had taught her.「Frodina, is this one good?」
Seeing a large and bright red tomato, Mira called Frodina and pointed to it to hear her opinion.
That one was clearly fully ripened, and it even had a star shaped pattern on its pointy end, a mark that it had been grown in a strenuous environment with little water so that it would become sweeter.
「That one is perfect, Master!」
Frodina examined it as well and quickly plucked it away. Then they moved to a new spot and repeated everything all over again, securing enough tomatoes to cook.
There were other vegetables involved in that dish, and Frodina took care of picking those. Mira had completed her important duty of selecting tomatoes, so she just walked around the vast fields, looking around leisurely. All of the security spells against intruders were turned off for the moment.
Her mind began to wander to her past experiences, and as she admired the magnificent crops growing everywhere, she realized this was her first time in a field as well. Being able to see all the effort involved in growing the crops also made them seem even more delicious.
「These look so good it’s almost like they’re begging to be eaten.」
She had just set foot in a field of strawberries, which looked plump and bright red, growing in dense bunches. She could almost hear a voice saying, 「we’re ripe, we’re delicious,」 from their alluring color.
Mira glanced over to another field, where Frodina was selecting eggplants with a sagely look. Her eyes were turned down, and away from Mira, unable to notice any movements.
(Now’s my chance…!)
Thinking that, Mira quickly reached out for the ripe strawberries…and pulled back. Then she looked at Frodina again and raised her voice.
「Frodina! These strawberries just whispered to me, wishing that I eat them. Can I take one?!」
Having heard the story of the fruit thief, Mira had gotten influenced into doing the same, only to recall how generous Frodina usually was, and knew that if she asked, Frodina would likely let her take one.
And the response was, 「Ah, sure. If that’s what they’re saying then might as well oblige and take as many as you want!」 She even giggled a little afterward. In such situations, being honest and asking for permission was always better than trying to sneak around.
Now that she had permission from the field’s owner, Mira plucked the first strawberry that had caught her attention, free of guilt and remorse.
「This really was grown skillfully.」
The strawberry felt hefty in her hand, before she shoved all of it in her mouth and began chewing. There was an explosion of flavor and juices almost immediately.
「Mm! This is delicious! I’ve never tasted a strawberry as good as this one before.」
It was almost like the soil itself was different in Valhalla, as the strawberry that had grown there was far better tasting than any other Mira had tried before. As she voiced her immediate impressions, she heard a certain voice.
‘If that’s true then I’ll just have to work even harder.’
It was Martel, who had been interested in seeing those fields as well, and even commended Frodina’s farming skills, but was also starting to see her as a rival. She usually appeared to be something like the holy mother of all delicious fruits, but her attitude was far more competitive than that would suggest.
Mira continued walking around Frodina’s fields, asking for her permission to try out different fruits, eventually reaching the furthest field from her starting point.
「Hm, this is the only empty one.」
Either whatever was planted there had not sprouted yet, or the field was not yet used. That vast field that stuck out a little from the others had clearly been tilled before, but there were no green plants or colorful fruits on it, leaving it as bare earth.
「Master, sorry for keeping you waiting.」
As Mira stood there wondering what had happened to that empty field, Frodina finished picking up vegetables and joined her. Frodina’s basket was chock full of vegetables, and the tomatoes that Mira had carefully selected. All of that would come together for their plan to cure Alfina’s pickiness against tomatoes.
「Those all look like splendid choices as well.」
Mira looked at the basket, admiring the choice of vegetables and tomatoes, and already looking forward to Frodina’s specialty, cooked with all of them. Frodina also seemed confident that her dish would be delicious.
「By the way, I’ve noticed you haven’t planted anything on this field here.」
Mira looked forward again, her gaze pointing to the empty field as she asked that. Frodina looked at it as well, replying, 「Ahh, this place…」 before falling silent, looking slightly troubled before continuing, 「What happened was…」
As she explained, she had prepared that area to be planted a while back.
「I had just obtained a really rare fruit, so I was planning on planting the seeds here…」
Some strange events had led to her obtaining a fruit that some did not even believe was real. Up to that point, she had only sown and grown regular crops, so the chance of growing something more interesting was too enticing to let go, and she began preparing the field right away.
But while she was busy doing that, Celestina and Elivina followed Christina’s lead to eat that fruit as a snack.
「I really should’ve stored it in a different place instead of leaving it out on the shelf like that…」
Frodina placed some of the blame on herself for storing that fruit on the same shelf as the other fruits they had, but she was also a bit blindsighted by her sisters’ rampant appetite, as they ate such a rare fruit without thinking twice about it.
Sadly the seeds of that fruit required special attention and would go bad if they dried out, and by the time Frodina found them, discarded by her sisters, that had already happened.
