Chapter 79: Chapter 79

His bad mood persisted even when they sat with the other guests on the steps, watching the amazing traditional fire dance in Uluwatu Temple.

Madeline glanced at Zane and gently touched his thigh, alerting the man instantly.

Zane turned his head at her and asked with a forced smile, "Yes, babe?"

"You look... pissed," Madeline commented. "Are you sure you want to be here?"

"Well..." Zane looked around first to check if there were any cameras around. The staff told them they were allowed to spend the night without the cameras, but only an idiot would believe them.

After ensuring no cameras were in sight, Zane put his hand on Madeline’s and said, "If I can choose, I’d rather be in that honeymoon bungalow with you."

"Even if we’re there, you know I can’t give you what you want, right?"

"Doesn’t matter." Zane’s smile gradually softened, and he leaned to whisper in Madeline’s ear, "I just want to spend time alone with you, without anyone’s watchful eyes. Oh, also the jacuzzi. I love the jacuzzi. I want to have it again with you."

Madeline shivered when his breath tickled her ear and neck. She breathed deeply to calm down. "Well, we can’t. But I can ask the staff to give us alone time to walk around the temple."

"That would be great. I just want to spend some time with you," Zane said.

Finally, after the fire dance ended, Madeline and Zane slipped out of the crowd and told the staff they were going for a quick private walk around the temple.

The temple didn’t have electricity around, but it was brightly lit with torches on the pathway, so it didn’t feel haunted.

In fact, it felt more romantic because whenever Zane looked at Madeline, he could see a glimpse of her beauty with each torch they had to pass. These torches added drama and mysticism to her, as if she were a mysterious lady that Zane couldn’t touch.

Which, unfortunately, was true to some extent.

Madeline was the first woman he truly wanted, and the first woman who didn’t want him.

"You’re going to make a hole by staring at me like that," Madeline commented while they kept walking. She glanced at Zane and grinned. "Am I that pretty?"

"You are."

"That’s just a joke, you know..."

"But you are beautiful," Zane sighed. "I feel cheated. Your bastard boyfriend must’ve set this up. He probably told the staff to lie about the honeymoon bungalow, so we wouldn’t have any intimate time together."

Madeline chuckled. She should’ve been mad with Zane as well, but for some reason, she was quite happy with this change because that meant she didn’t have to spend the night trying to keep herself for Lance, despite Zane’s temptation.

On top of that, this change also showed how her anger actually affected Lance.

’That means he’s feeling something.’

"What’s so funny?" Zane asked with a sour face. "Am I so repulsive that you don’t want to spend a night with me?"

"Don’t put words into my mouth," Madeline said. "I’m just entertained by what my boyfriend is doing. I don’t mind spending the night with you again—the jacuzzi part, I mean, nothing more than that."

Zane was already in a cranky mood when he didn’t get what he wanted, but he got even crankier when he realized that Madeline liked what her bastard boyfriend was doing.

He felt unappreciated after all their cooperation together.

"What’s so good about that scum?" Zane said boldly. "He tricked you into joining this reality show only to give you obstacles. He allows another man to touch you, so he doesn’t really love you, Madeline."

’I know that,’ Madeline told herself. Though she liked this gesture of jealousy and whatnot from Lance, she wasn’t stupid enough to believe that Lance truly loved her, at least not after this reality show.

Still, she couldn’t help but smile at the fact that Lance wasn’t ignoring her entirely.

Madeline went silent for a while and had a self-deprecating scoff. ’What are you thinking, Madeline? This is exactly what happened between you and Jon. You fell madly in love with him and believed everything he said. You’re so pathetic.’

"So why don’t you give me a chance?" Zane asked. "I will treat you better than he ever could, Madeline Rose."

Madeline finally halted her step. She turned to face Zane, who showed his anger and desperation. She didn’t expect that getting robbed for one night was enough to set Zane off.

"I don’t understand you, Zane," Madeline said, staring into his eyes. "We’ve just known each other for less than a week. Why are you being so pushy?"

"I—" Zane closed his lips before he said the truth. How he had been yearning for her for thirteen years and all his struggles just so he could meet her again while in a better condition.

But he wondered if Madeline might find him creepy for obsessing over her for over a decade.

He also wondered what would happen if Madeline rejected him again after he told her everything.

Zane clenched his fist, trying to suppress his own desire, and in the end, twisted the truth a little: "I just fell in love with you at first sight. And I want you, nothing more, nothing less."

"I don’t believe in love at first sight," Madeline said. However, that was also a lie. She had a crush on Jon at first sight, and she felt fireworks in her head with just one kiss from Lance.

But she didn’t want to show her idiocy in front of Zane or Lance. She didn’t want Lance to see her as an idiot and naive girl who could be easily manipulated. She had enough of that from her experience with Jon.

"It doesn’t matter if you believe it or not. But I love you, and I—"

"—Please stop this, Zane," Madeline interrupted. She looked away, as she didn’t want to see the anguish on Zane’s face. "I can’t reciprocate, no matter how many times you confess."
