Chapter 77: Chapter 77
Valerie drank her Whiskey Sour in one gulp and then wore her glasses again. "We can finish our transaction after you get eliminated. I hope you’re true to your words, Madeline."
"No, I hope YOU are true to your words," Madeline smirked. "One million dollars is not small for me."
"Yeah, yeah, that’s just pocket money for me," Valerie said, before she turned her back and walked away.
Madeline stayed at the bar, stirring her drink. She glanced at the bartender, who had listened the whole time. "You know how to keep quiet, right?"
The bartender jolted, "Y—Yes, Miss. I won’t tell anyone."
"Good," Madeline smiled. "Sometimes you have to strike that kind of deal to get the best outcome, right?"
The bartender didn’t dare to say anything. He just busied himself by cleaning the glasses. His boss had told him not to comment on anything because they had just gotten a new investor to expand the resort.
Madeline stared at her drink and murmured, "It makes me wonder what kind of expression you will make when we meet again, Lance."

Valerie returned to her private bungalow.
She threw herself on the sofa and rolled her eyes when she saw the caller ID on her phone.
She finally answered the call from Lance, who had been bombarding her phone with non-stop calls ever since she hung up on him before she made a deal with Madeline.
After all, she didn’t want Lance to know that she had manipulated the game by bribing Madeline. It would dent her reputation and credibility.
But that was the only way out she could think of. Lance’s rage would screw them if Madeline won the reality show fair and square and had a full month of paradise with Zane Eastwood.
—
"Yes, what?" Valerie asked as she slumped on the sofa.
"Why did you hang up on me?" Lance asked back. "I still want to listen to her voice."
"You got what you wanted, Lance," Valerie said. "You said that you want to hear her voice without having to argue with her, so I made a secret call while having a conversation with Madeline. I even made sure that she told the truth about her time with Zane Eastwood in the honeymoon bungalow. What more do you want?"
Valerie was once again on a mission to appease her cousin. Lance had been very cranky after he thought that Zane and Madeline were having sex in that bungalow.
He was ready to abandon all of his work in the company if he could drag Madeline back to Los Angeles and cuff their hands together.
The only thing stopping him from doing so was the office politics.
His scum big brother could’ve taken over his company while he was absent.
"I still need her to assure me that she’s not going to do anything with Zane," Lance insisted.
"You heard it from her. She’s not sleeping with Zane. She’s very loyal to you, which is surprising because if I were Madeline, I’d pick Zane over you in a heartbeat," Valerie chuckled.
"You’re just saying that to shit on me," Lance sneered. "I am richer than him, far more handsome, and I will stay relevant for the rest of my life. Madeline would be stupid for not choosing me."
"Because you’re a rich boy, born wealthy and powerful," Valerie said as she was picking a fight with her cousin
"You’re also born rich, you idiot."
"Exactly, that’s why I respect Zane... and Madeline," Valerie said. "Zane is self-made, at least. And I’m sure Madeline would eventually realize that picking you is a mistake when she has a lot of better options around."
"Shut up. You know that’s not going to happen," Lance said confidently. He knew that Valerie liked to insult him like this, and he also did the same. They are more of a best friend than cousins, after all.
But this joke didn’t make him comfortable because he began to be wary if Madeline found Zane more appealing.
’We’re starting with a contract. What if that bastard gives her a better contract?’ Lance wondered. He felt restless, afraid that Madeline would leave him.
Valerie seemed to catch Lance’s silence as anxiety, so she teased him further: "Aw, look at our Lancelot, getting anxious because his girl is about to be snatched by another man. Our little bear is experiencing his first love."
"Tsk, stop teasing me," Lance clicked his tongue. "I like her, but love is too much."
"Well, your actions say otherwise," Valerie said. "Anyway, I’m going to rest. You don’t need to worry about Madeline; she’s a good woman, and I must give you a thumbs up for dating her."
Beep.
—
Lance tossed the phone on the bed. He stared at the ceiling as he thought about Madeline again tonight.
He was very busy in his office, trying to improve Empress Entertainment’s brand and fight off those bastards who tried to persuade him to resign so Theodore, his big brother, could take over.
Yet, in this dire situation, he was still thinking about her.
He couldn’t get his mind off the idea that Madeline might be sleeping with another man.
That’s why he called Valerie, demanding that she give a clear answer about Madeline and Zane.
Lance had a stupid grin on his face as he remembered what Madeline had said on the secret call.
-
’I, Madeline Rose, am not a whore who’d sleep with any man, not when I already have a boyfriend.’
-
When he heard that statement, a big boulder was lifted off his shoulder. It was an assurance that Madeline was still his property.
Valerie kept teasing him that he was in love with Madeline, but he wanted to laugh. "So stupid, I’m not in love with Madeline. I just don’t want my property to be touched by anyone. She is mine and will always be until I don’t need her anymore."
Lance was selfish. He admitted it.
He was the most egoistic, selfish, and ambitious of all his siblings. He never wanted to share anything with his brothers since he was young, let alone a random man he could squash like a bug.
