Chapter 54: Chapter 54

Madeline’s mind short-circuited when Zane gave her an indirect confession. It was abrupt and unexpected because Madeline would never think that a man like Zane would get himself entangled with a controversial woman like her.

So she didn’t believe him instantly. She looked around the bedroom restlessly, as if she was searching for something.

"What are you doing?" Zane asked.

"I’m searching for more hidden cameras or audio recording devices. I can’t let them hear what you said just now."

"Why not?" Zane asked. "There’s nothing wrong with what I said."

Madeline finally stopped searching. She stared at Zane, who looked so serious.

"Say that again," Madeline ordered.

"I can love you better than he can, Madeline," Zane repeated his sentence without stuttering. His eyes showed certainty, as if he had nothing to lose.

Madeline shook her head. "You’re being completely idiotic. You don’t understand the severity of your words, Zane."

"I don’t see anything wrong with what I said," Zane insisted, shrugging his shoulders.

"You—" Madeline clicked her tongue. "You’re THE Zane Eastwood. You have an army of rabid fans that would claw any woman who dares to get close to you. If you tell the public that we’re dating, then I won’t live to see the next day."

"Besides, why would you destroy your career by saying stupid shit like that to a woman who’s seen as a cheating skank? Aren’t you scared about what they would say?"

"Not really?" Zane shrugged. "I hope they see me for my craft as an actor, not my personal life."

"You know that’s impossible," Madeline said, rolling her eyes. "Anyway, don’t ever say something like that again, whether you’re joking or not, just don’t."

"But what if I’m not joking at all?" Zane pressured her. "What if I am serious about my words, and I’ll go public about us?"

"Then you just did a career suicide," Madeline sighed. "Look, Zane, I am ultra-broke right now. I don’t have much money, and this is the only thing going for me. I can’t let it get ruined by another man I barely know, and you’ve worked so hard to be where you are right now. I can’t let you ruin your life like this."

The more Madeline rejected him, the hotter his gaze got. The idea of Madeline, who cared so much about his career, gave him an itch in his heart.

"How do you know I’ve worked hard? Do we know each other before this?" Zane asked.

"Uhh, no, we just met during this reality show," Madeline said, looking away from him. She tried to pull her hand, but Zane squeezed it so tight. "I mean, everyone already knows about you. Everything is on the internet these days."

"I see," Zane chuckled.

He didn’t understand why Madeline wouldn’t want to admit they had been acquainted long before this reality show, but if that was the game she wanted to play, then so be it.

"You know that you’re a strange one, right?" Zane said. "I thought you’d be more than happy to say yes. Or is this your way to get my attention? Because it’s working now."

"My reputation is already on the ground. I don’t want it to get buried prematurely because of another scandal," Madeline said. "I don’t want to have anything to do with a Hollywood Megastar with crazy rabid fangirls."

"Only because of that?"

"And I have a boyfriend," Madeline repeated.

Zane’s smile deepened. He pulled Madeline into his embrace and hugged her tight.

"Z—Zane?"

Zane put his lips near her ear and said, "Just so you know, Madeline, I’m a very patient man. I can wait for thirteen years, and I can wait for more."

Zane released Madeline, who was petrified on the spot.

He walked around the bed, sat on the sofa, spread his legs, and said, "Now, can I get my gift?"

It took a while for Madeline to recover from her confusion. She looked at Zane and asked, "I told you, I can’t do that kind of reward. I have a boyfriend."

"I didn’t expect you to be the loyal type," Zane said. "Now, that only makes me want you even more. That bastard boyfriend of yours is so lucky."

"S—Stop this, Zane. Just tell me what you want; as long as it’s not about that, then I’m down for it."

"First, take off your makeup. I want to see the real you," Zane demanded.

"I... I can do that," Madeline nodded. She planned to do it, anyway. She wanted to make Zane her ally, and showing her real face was part of the plan.

It created trust between them, just like how Madeline created trust with Jasmin.

Thus, she went to the bathroom with her makeup pouch and started wiping off everything, making sure that Zane saw her bare face.

After she was done, she cracked open the bathroom door slightly and peeked at Zane, who was still sitting on the sofa.

But her mind almost exploded when she saw Zane wearing nothing but boxer briefs under a bathrobe. He was watching a movie while drinking a beer.

He looked so sexy, especially with how his boxers almost left nothing to the imagination.

"W-w-w-why are you not wearing your clothes?!" Madeline stuttered from the bathroom, panicking because this was not what she had expected.

"I’m about to use the warm jacuzzi with you. That’s my second request, by the way," Zane said. "It’s fine if you don’t bring your swimwear. You can always wear the ones prepared by the staff in the wardrobe."

"Or... you’re feeling bold today, we can always go skinny dip," Zane said while hooking his finger on his boxers, ready to pull it down. "I don’t mind at all—"

"STOP! NO SKINNY DIPPING!" Madeline interrupted. "Keep your boxers on!"

"Alright, if you say so," Zane chuckled.

Madeline took a deep breath. She slowly walked out of the bathroom, still wearing her white summer dress. She was bare-faced, so no dramatic makeup made her look villainous or mean.

"S—So, this is me without makeup..." Madeline said. "As promised."
