Chapter 183: Chapter 183

"Nathan, that’s not so kind, isn’t it?" Madeline scolded.

Nathan clicked his tongue. He felt so awkward in front of his mother, whom he hadn’t seen in years, feeling that they weren’t close enough for him to pay her a visit to the hospital.

On top of that, he also disliked being scolded by Madeline in front of anyone else; he only tolerated her scolding when they were alone.

Nevertheless, he begrudgingly followed what his sister told him to do and murmured, "Merry Christmas, Mom..."

"Nathan..." Diana tried getting up from the bed but was too weak to do that, so she called him instead, "Come here, son. I miss you so much."

Reluctantly, Nathan approached his mother.

He allowed Diana to hug him tightly, though it took him a moment before he hugged her back.

He felt awkward because visiting his mother hadn’t been his intention at all.

However, since Madeline requested it, he decided to go solely because he wanted his sister to be happy.

"How have you been, Nathan? How’s school?" Diana asked, pulling away from their embrace. She didn’t know where to start because she had hundreds of questions for her son.

But she wanted to talk with her son, hoping to reconcile somehow.

"All is well, Mom," Nathan replied. He glanced at Madeline before saying, "I came here because Madeline asked me to."

Diana’s smile faltered. "Did she tell you to lie to me as well? You’re a good kid. Just tell me the truth about your sister and that man."

"Mom, I’m not a child anymore," Nathan refuted. "I’m sixteen now. I know what’s right and wrong."

"Madeline and I have been living in Lance’s mansion for a while. Her increasing notoriety makes it hard for us to stay in our old home," Nathan said. "But I can assure you they are very much in love, and Lance is a good man."

"Nathan, you don’t need to lie for your sister. I can’t give them my blessing because I don’t want her to repeat the same mistake she made with Jon..." Diana said. "All I want is the best for both of you."

"I’m not lying, Mom," Nathan said with utmost seriousness after finding out that Zane Eastwood had truly brainwashed his mother. "They genuinely love each other, and I can’t allow you to be misled by a man who has an unhealthy obsession with Maddy."

Nathan’s earnestness slowly chipped away Diana’s hard heart. She began to question what Nathan said was the truth because it contradicted what Zane told her.

Diana fixed her gaze on Lance, who immediately tensed up. "But if he’s so good to your sister, then how come he would give her an unfair contract and want to humiliate her on national TV?"

"It’s my fault, Mrs. Rose," Lance interrupted before Nathan could speak. Admitting his mistake was the first thing he had to do before gaining Diana’s trust. "I was a businessman at heart, so I didn’t see Madeline as a human being but as a tool, I could use to gain profit. But I’ve changed my mind once she made me realize that I am the one who can’t live without her."

"What a glib tongue you have, Mr. Grant," Diana sneered. "I’m not as naive as my daughter. You won’t fool me with that."

"If it’ll help reassure you, I will marry her whenever she wants," Lance declared. "It is her who doesn’t want to get married just yet."

Diana was stunned.

That sentence truly shook her to the core because marriage was a sacred thing, and if Lance simply wanted to play with Madeline, then he wouldn’t even entertain the idea of marriage because he would have to give up half of his assets in case of divorce.

Diana looked at her daughter, and Madeline shrugged, "Yeah, he asked me a few times if he could propose anytime soon. I said no because I feel like we don’t have enough footing to actually do that, not yet, at least."

"I’m working on it," Lance added. "I’ll give her financial and emotional security so we can get married eventually."

Diana began to hesitate.

Madeline and Lance looked so natural, which was a stark difference from how stiff and cold Madeline was towards Zane.

"I understand that you might not trust Madeline after what happened. But you can trust me..." Nathan said. He lowered his head, feeling shy that he had to say this to convince his mother, "Lance also helped me get a part-time job in a Michelin-star restaurant and get trained by a real chef. He also suggested that I go to Le Cordon Bleu, a culinary school in France."

Nathan paused for a second and murmured, "I think I’m going to be a chef in the future, Mom."

Diana finally melted as she realized that Nathan was being genuine. Though they weren’t close, Diana understood Nathan well enough to know he wasn’t being forced.

"Then chase that dream, son," Diana encouraged him. "If you want to be a chef, then go for it, and never give up until you achieve it, alright?"

"Mm..." Nathan nodded.

Diana patted Nathan’s head and then looked at Lance.

She still found it strange that a man from such a family background would lower himself in front of her, but that was definitely a good sign because now Diana knew that Lance truly loved Madeline.

"Come here, Mr. Grant."

"You can call me Lance, Mrs. Rose," Lance replied, stepping forward to stand beside the hospital bed. He still pulled Madeline with him, afraid that his presence alone wouldn’t be enough to appease the sickly lady.

"Well, I can call you Lance, and you can call me Diana or even Mom, but there’s a condition for that," Diana said with a chuckle. She gently held Lance and Madeline’s hands. "You can call me Diana once you marry my daughter. I give you both my blessings, but please... if there comes a day, you grow bored of my daughter, please just return her to me without hurting her."
