Chapter 117: Chapter 117

The atmosphere around the living room turned sour when Madeline mentioned how hopeless she was about her future.

Jasmin didn’t expect Madeline to be this bleak because she obviously shone the brightest during the reality show.

She would have joined in other reality show gigs or even a real movie again this time, and everyone would watch. Though probably not for the right reason.

But at least it would bring food to the table, right?

Jasmin didn’t want to ruin the mood, so she said, "If you ever need help, you can always call me, okay?"

Madeline smiled and nodded weakly. "Mhm. But don’t worry about me; I will manage. I always manage to get by in life."

**

Jasmin gave Madeline a tight hug before they finally left at night. She closed the door and leaned on it while staring at Nathan, who was busy cleaning the dining table.

"I didn’t expect you and Jasmin to be friends in real life. I thought it was just for the show," Nathan said as he stacked all the pizza boxes. "She seems to be very fond of you, Maddy."

"We bonded through misfortune," Madeline said. "When two people bond through sadness and grief, they become close. Just like Jasmin and I."

"I see..." Nathan paused for a moment and asked, "How about Zane?"

"We—"

"Jasmin asked if Zane was living with you. So you two must have been very close during the filming, right?"

"She asked that?"

"Yeah, and a man named Lance." Nathan shrugged. "Is he one of the hidden cast members in Summer Heat Lovers? Or maybe a crew? Jasmin basically asked if you live with Lance or Zane."

...

Nathan got no answer from his sister. But Madeline’s twisted expression, as if she were holding a big secret, made him even more curious—if not suspicious.

Madeline had a nasty breakup with Jonathan, and their affair ruined her career, along with everything that she had built since she was young.

Nathan also saw how broken her sister was after she got dumped. So, it was natural for him to worry about her safety, especially when her best friend mentioned two names.

Zane and Lance.

"Are you dating both of them, Maddy?" Nathan asked.

"N—No," Madeline immediately denied.

"Then why are you nervous?"

"I’m not nervous," Madeline denied again. She rushed to the stairs and said, "I’m going to take a shower and rest. You should too."

"But how about these men..."

"They are nobody. Just ignore those rumors," Madeline said before she ignored him completely and entered her room.

Nathan sighed.

Nathan got worried because he knew Madeline was dodging his questions, which indirectly confirmed her entanglement with two men, Zane and Lance.

’What if both of them have bad intentions towards her? What should I do if Maddy gets her heart broken again?’

Nathan had countless worries about Madeline, as he knew how fragile Madeline was when she was in love.

’Why don’t you tell me, Maddy? I’m just worried about you...’

**

Madeline finished taking a hot shower. She wore an oversized shirt over her underwear while sitting on her bed with her damp hair.

Her fingers hovered over the call button as she stared at Zane’s contact number.

She hesitated because she wondered what kind of reaction Zane would make during the phone call.

Would he ask about her wellbeing with his gentle tone?

Or would he insult her to the moon and back as an act of revenge?

Honestly, Madeline preferred him to simply become nonchalant towards her so she could sincerely utter her apology and hope that they could at least be friends.

And as for romantic relationships...

Madeline didn’t dare to think about it.

She took a deep breath and murmured, "Here goes nothing."

Madeline pressed the call button and waited for about ten seconds before the call was connected.

...

...

...

Neither Madeline nor Zane wanted to talk after the call was connected, but they could hear each other’s heavy breath.

Madeline’s heart became heavy as hundreds of memories between them during the filming of Summer Heat Lovers began plaguing her mind.

She felt guilty because this man had done so much for her during the filming.

Zane saved her from a lifetime of embarrassment, and he treated her with nothing but kindness.

’If only I can feel a spark between us, Zane...’

"Um... Hi, Zane. It’s been a while..." Madeline started the conversation.

"Are you alright?" Zane’s sudden question surprised her. He didn’t even wait for her reply as he continued "Did those online haters bully you in real life as well? When did you get attacked, and where?"

"No one attacked me," Madeline replied. "There are a lot of cyberbullies and hate comments, but none of them dare to attack me in real life."

"Did those cyberbullies go too far?"

"Well, they always went too far. But I don’t care about those people. I’m doing just fine."

"Then why are you calling me?" Zane asked.

"Eh? I... uh... I just want to catch up and apologize..." Madeline replied meekly. "Jasmin gave your phone number to me."

"I know. I told her to do it," Zane said. "But I specifically told her to let you know that you can only call me when you’re in a pinch or get attacked by those crazy fangirls."

Zane clicked his tongue annoyedly. He wanted to end the call so he wouldn’t miss Madeline even more.

But Madeline’s voice was like a sweet nectar he couldn’t get enough of. The moment he had a taste of it after a while, the more he realized he wanted more.

This feeling of yearning for Madeline Rose was like hundreds of ants crawling around his heart, making him itch on the inside, but he couldn’t do anything to relieve the itches.

"I just want to have a talk with you, Zane," Madeline said honestly. "I don’t want to cut contact with you just because of what happened in Bali."

"What happened in Bali gives me enough reason not to be entangled with you for too long, Madeline Rose," Zane said. "You’re like a bright-coloured poison that I can’t ignore."
