Chapter 971: 014 Bernard Taylor’s Story
Upon hearing Avery say so, Nancy Sallow suggested they go back to Avery’s store to tell the story because it was hard for her to speak up in the fast food restaurant outside.
Avery agreed, and the two returned to the store, where the cake master stayed behind while the rest went on their break. Only one shop assistant remained, as there were hardly any customers at this time.
Avery first brewed a pot of coffee before they settled down in the Resting Room at the back. Over coffee, they listened to the story.
It was only then that Avery found out that Bernard Taylor had never been in a relationship, all because he once had a love so deep it branded his soul. This love had entangled him for the first half of his life, which explained his indifferent attitude towards women.
Even before Nancy Sallow started the story, Avery had conjured the image of an angelic girl in her mind. She felt that only an angel could be worthy of Bernard Taylor, which was why she had been reluctant to believe that he could have feelings for her, considering herself just an ordinary girl, not standing out at all even among the ordinary.
So, how could she, someone like that, possibly be liked by Bernard Taylor? In her mind, his previous targeting of her was nothing more than him finding her disagreeable.
Nancy Sallow began her story.
The girl Bernard Taylor once liked was named Violet Orson, an art student who loved painting and was one grade below him at their school.
The second year after they had started high school, the school initiated an art class, admitting thirty students. Since it was a brand new experiment, they did not dare recruit too many, so Violet ended up in that class.
That year, Violet’s middle school exam scores were impressive, good enough to place her in the top Experimental Class of their age group, yet she chose the art class, focusing on painting.
Her preference for light-colored clothing, especially white dresses, made her a famous sight at school. Senior boys and junior boys alike were infatuated with her.
Secret love letters, silent crushes, and boys openly confessing their love were commonplace, but Violet always gently rejected them with a smile. However, if anyone dared confess a second time, she surely wouldn’t be smiling anymore.
Violet was someone who strictly adhered to her principles. Usually, the first time someone confessed, she would let them down easy, but not the second time.
In the entire school, including both the middle and high school students, barring the guys who were decidedly unattractive, nearly every boy who thought he had a chance had confessed to Violet at some point.
The only exception was Bernard Taylor.
The two of them were quite similar. To the boys, Violet was like an angel, and to the girls, Bernard Taylor was akin to a celestial being.
Angels and celestial beings were treasures in the eyes of mortals: boys chased after Violet, girls after Bernard Taylor, but none succeeded.
One day, Bernard Taylor’s class had a physical education lesson, and Violet’s class came out to paint, with the sports field and its people as their subjects. Besides Bernard Taylor’s class, there was another class out there as well.
While Bernard Taylor and his friends were practicing basketball, they soon completed their drills smoothly, and the sports teacher allowed them to rest. The three boys sat on the grass, their gaze not on their classmates still playing but on Violet’s class instead.
Perhaps it was an artist’s aura, but in Violet’s class with thirty students—two boys and twenty-eight girls—all were attractive. The boys had long hair and, at a glance, one might mistake them all for girls.
Standing out the most was, of course, Violet. So, even from a distance, they immediately noticed Violet, who was deeply focused on her painting, her beauty enhanced by her concentration.
Two of Bernard Taylor’s friends began to tease him, "Bernard, the girls say you’re like a celestial being, while the boys say Violet’s an angel. Don’t you think, a celestial being and an angel make a perfect match?"
"Yeah, Bernard, most of the bold guys have already confessed to her and got shot down. Except for you. How about giving it a try? Let’s make a bet. Each of us will give you five hundred if you confess to Violet. Even if she rejects you, it’s five hundred each. But if she accepts, a thousand each from us. What do you say?" said another boy, generously proposing.
For them, freshly into high school, such a wager was genuinely high stakes.
