Chapter 935: 006 I can just stay at a hotel_5
"Okay," Michael Auclair nodded in agreement.
As they took turns driving, just about to reach G City, Michael Auclair’s phone rang. It was a call from Adelle Turner. He hesitated as he looked at the caller ID, unsure whether to answer.
Why was this woman calling him at this time? They weren’t due back to work until tomorrow. What on earth did she want from him now?
They had slept together on the night of the company’s annual party because he was drunk, and then, after being rejected by Avery the following day, he was feeling down and had gone to Adelle for a temporary fix. He regretted it deeply since and had agreed to give her a generous compensation. But it seemed like it was never enough for this woman.
They had clearly made a deal before. He had agreed to let her replace Giselle Browman as team leader, and after that he would give her a sum of money, and then they would be even. Apart from work-related issues, they were not supposed to call each other.
But now, she was calling him a day before they were due back to work.
Just as Michael Auclair was debating whether to answer, Avery Graham reminded him, "Why aren’t you answering your phone? It’s rung twice already."
Avery didn’t know what he was wrestling with in his mind and didn’t find his hesitation to answer the phone particularly strange.
"Oh," Michael Auclair seemed to snap back to reality. Thankfully, Avery was the one driving. If he had been driving, he was sure there would have been an accident. He began to explain to Avery, "It’s a colleague from work. I’m not sure what she wants?"
"Hello, Adelle, what do you need?" Michael Auclair answered the phone, looking unfazed, and his tone was deliberately calm, as if there was absolutely nothing between him and Adelle.
"There’s something I want to talk to you about. Do you have time? When will you be here? Let’s have dinner together tonight," said Adelle from the other end. She had found out just the day before that when she went to look for Michael Auclair, she had been followed by her family.
Now her parents were questioning her about her boyfriend, using the photos her brother had taken.
To admit she had a boyfriend was problematic, and to deny it was the same; she had indeed returned very late, close to dawn, after she left that night. Her parents hadn’t asked why she had come home so late; it turned out they were waiting to confront her.
She had no choice but to say she had a boyfriend. Previously, she had planned to bring back any man to get them off her back, not realizing they already had photos of Michael Auclair. Without him coming in person, she couldn’t think of any other way out.
It truly wasn’t intentional. How could she have known that a simple step outside to get some fresh air would lead to her being followed?
"Tonight? I’m not available. I’m with my girlfriend. Let’s talk about anything else tomorrow back at the office," Michael Auclair said straight away, making it clear to her that calling him at this moment was unwise.
"Alright then, we can talk tomorrow," said Adelle, understanding that her timing was off. She knew they were together, but she had still chosen to call him then, her intentions as obvious as could be.
Relieved upon hearing the call end, Michael Auclair took a deep breath.
Avery Graham, focused on driving, hadn’t paid attention to his conversation.
However, as they neared G City, she received a call from Giselle Browman. The scatterbrain had already arrived but had carelessly forgotten her keys and was asking when Avery could get there.
Avery checked the time and told her it would be another hour. She advised Giselle to find a place to sit for a bit. Giselle felt rather unlucky, especially since she was carrying so many things, but there was nothing she could do. She deserved to wander outside for a while longer for forgetting her keys at home.
An hour and a half later, Michael Auclair parked the car beneath the building of Avery’s rented apartment in the residential area. Giselle Browman was drinking coffee at the café on the ground floor of the building, feeling incredibly grateful that such a competent store was open so early.
Avery’s call made her feel blissfully happy.
The three of them joined efforts to carry the belongings from both sides up to the apartment. Of course, the heavy lifting was naturally done by Michael Auclair. As a subordinate of Michael’s, Giselle didn’t dare slack off. This moment made her regret that her future brother-in-law was her leader at the company. How nice it would have been if that weren’t the case.
At that time, she too could have enjoyed his services like her sister did.
"Mr. Auclair, I’m starting to regret introducing you to my sister and letting you become my brother-in-law," Giselle Browman grumbled as she carried the items.
