Chapter 930: 005 Parents approve, younger aunt causes difficulties_7
Once they reached the Department Store, Jollie Auclair’s avaricious nature became apparent. In front of Avery Graham, she’d praise one item after another, claiming one of her classmates was using this or a cousin had that, and she did not.
Avery naturally opened her wallet and purchased the items for her. Although the money wasn’t a lot, Avery’s impression of Jollie worsened.
Michael Auclair didn’t quite understand these things. Eventually, when the three of them arrived at the phone section, Jollie once again stopped in her tracks, "Big Brother, remember you said over the phone that you’d buy me a new phone? Have you forgotten?"
"What model do you want to buy? Go ahead and pick it out yourself," Michael recalled the promise.
"Hmm, I want the latest Apple model; it’s available for pre-order, and you have to pay half upfront," Jollie declared shamelessly while also gauging Avery’s reaction.
Avery didn’t respond. She had seen the phone Jollie was using, which still seemed perfectly fine and fairly new. She didn’t understand why it was necessary to change phones at this time.
"Half the payment upfront? When can you get it?" Michael asked the waiter.
"Sir, good day, it will take about half a month to receive it," the waiter replied enthusiastically.
"Wait so long and also pay half upfront?" Michael felt the waiting time was too long.
"How about this, I also think the wait is too long. Jollie, I have a suggestion. If you get into G University, you don’t need your brother to buy it for you, I’ll buy it for you then. What do you think?" Avery knew she shouldn’t meddle in the siblings’ affairs, but she really couldn’t stand Jollie’s character.
"Right, Sister Avery is correct. You’ve been retaking examinations for three years. If you really want the phone, once you get into G University, I’ll gift you an Apple set as a welcome present, how about that?" Michael also liked Avery’s suggestion.
"No way? Big Brother, you always go back on your word," Jollie said, feeling depressed and wronged.
"Your Big Brother isn’t going back on his word, this is called motivation. Besides, Jollie, your phone is still in good shape and working. It wouldn’t hurt to keep using it for another six months. All you need is to be able to make calls and send messages. For the next half a year, your main focus should be on studying hard. Having the latest phone won’t help you with your studies," Avery stood by her principle.
In the end, Jollie couldn’t win against the two of them and had to give up reluctantly.
During the rest of the shopping trip, Jollie felt bored. No matter how she praised the items, Avery was steadfast in guarding her wallet, pretending not to understand, or if she did understand, she would swiftly change the subject.
Jollie had come to understand what kind of person Avery really was. All those women from big cities were supposed to be generous, but she saw clearly now that her brother had found a real exception.
Later, Jollie mentioned Avery’s stinginess and other faults in the family Whatsapp Group, causing those cousins’ impression of Avery to plummet to zero.
As a result, during the dinner with the family that evening, despite Avery’s carefree demeanor, she could feel the odd looks from Michael’s cousins.
She was a sensitive person, not sure if she had done something wrong, but she didn’t realize that all this was Jollie’s doing; her reputation had been tarnished before she even showed up.
Watching Avery uncomfortably trying to warm up to her cold relatives, Jollie was secretly pleased: "That’s what you get for angering me. Who asked you to make me unhappy? You deserve to suffer."
Avery didn’t care too much; after all, Mr. and Mrs. Auclair were very pleased with her and treated her well. In the future, she would be interacting more with the two elders and the younger sister-in-law Jollie, not those relatives of the Auclair Family.
"Avery, girls from big cities are usually generous. This is the first time I’ve seen someone as petty as you," Jollie’s cousin said sarcastically as she walked by, arm in arm with her husband, after the meal had ended.
"Did I do something wrong to make you say that, cousin?" Avery asked with dignity.
Since they were the hosts, they stood at the door to see the guests out. Michael had drunk too much, so Avery and Mrs. Auclair came out to see off the relatives. Mrs. Auclair had just escorted another elder, and now at the entrance, only Avery remained. She had not expected to be greeted with such words from the cousin she was seeing off.
"Look, you’re about to be Jollie’s sister-in-law. What’s the big deal about buying her a phone? Besides, she asked her brother, not you, to buy it. Tell me, do you really need to control Michael’s money that tightly? He earns over a million a year, you know," the cousin said, insinuating that it was quite a fortune.
"..." Avery smiled, understanding the situation. So, this was the issue. She finally understood why everyone was treating her this way. It was all to take revenge for Jollie, wasn’t it?
Very well.
"True, Michael earns over a million a year, but there are always bigger fish. Have any of you calculated his expenses over there? Are you suggesting he should live without eating, drinking, socializing, or spending? Or is he just a money-making machine, supposed to save up every bit of that million without any personal use, just to keep satisfying his sister’s whims? Reasonable requests can be met, but we have the right to refuse unreasonable ones. It’s not about how much we earn; it’s a matter of principle."
Avery didn’t want to justify herself to these relatives, but she couldn’t swallow the insult. She had acted for Jollie’s benefit, but clearly, Jollie didn’t appreciate it and made things difficult for her.
