Chapter 888: 017 Smoke disappears and clouds scatter
The doctor and nurse rushed over upon hearing the news and carried out a rescue operation on Vanessa Taylor. It seemed this sort of thing had happened many times before, so when the young man rushed back, he didn’t blame Ellie Wilton. Instead, he comforted her.
"Don’t worry too much," the young man said. "There’s nothing serious, the doctors will do their best. And even if something happens, we can only do our humanly best and leave the rest to fate." He had come to terms with the situation, having received several critical condition notices from the doctor before.
That’s why every time something like this happened, they were always psychologically prepared.
Ellie Wilton didn’t say anything, just numbly nodded. The man thought she was worried, or perhaps feeling guilty, so he didn’t say much more. In fact, at that moment, Ellie Wilton was actually reflecting on the last words Vanessa Taylor had said before.
She said that the arsonist at Fortstar Orphanage was Hannah Browman, that sister she had always respected, who had never once shown her a furrowed brow or jealous eyes, let alone behave like some modern women who, upon learning of their man’s affair, would go as far as to tear the mistress’s clothes off in public.
Therefore, she had always believed Hanna Browman to be a kind person. She had given Marcus Parker four children, and the elderly Mrs. Parker had been quite open-minded. Once she was sure Ellie wouldn’t disrupt her son’s family, she never troubled Ellie again.
So, how could such an educated and sensible woman, favored by Mrs. Parker, commit such an inhumane act? After all, it was an orphanage, filled with children, all of whom were already pitiable. How could she bear to inflict such cruelty?
Thinking and thinking, Ellie Wilton couldn’t help but tremble all over. If that was the case, what kind of people were those around her? Just the thought of it was terrifying.
Vanessa Taylor was her best friend, and aside from her, the one person Anna trusted most. Yet, could such a person, knowing someone was out to harm Anna, do nothing to stop it? To just watch idly as Anna was swallowed by the flames?
How could she do that?
Even though she was aware of what Vanessa Taylor was enduring right now, the thought of what had happened in the past made Ellie Wilton so angry that she wanted to leave on the spot. Luckily, Anna had not died—it was a blessing from heaven.
Ellie Wilton stood up, startling the young man beside her. Just then, the ward door opened and the doctor came out, shaking their head at them. This was resigning oneself to fate.
"You should handle her affairs,", the doctor said calmly announcing the patient’s death. "Please accept my condolences."
"Yes, I understand," the young man replied calmly, then pulled out a phone and walked to the end of the hallway to make a call.
Ellie Wilton was stupefied; the person just left the world after she had informed her about the past truth. Suddenly, she felt regretful. Why had she chosen today to come to her? If she hadn’t, she would never have learned such a cruel truth. She didn’t think it was Vanessa Taylor’s confession; she truly hadn’t expected her good friend to be such a terrifying person.
This person was dead, and Ellie felt no joy at all; rather, she felt that dying like that was letting her off too easily.
And then there was Hannah Browman, the ever dignified and noble woman, whose blood running through her veins was so filthy. How had these two women allied themselves? How had they managed to commit the act of killing her son? Moreover, they had taken so many orphaned lives. No wonder they lived such agonizing lives later on.
No wonder Hannah Browman turned to fasting and praying; it was because she’d committed such a conscience-eroding deed. But having done it, perhaps a lifetime of penance would not be enough to cleanse her soul.
Taking advantage of the fact that the young man wasn’t paying attention, Ellie Wilton stood up and left. She didn’t want to look at Vanessa Taylor even for a last glance.
When Ellie Wilton got home, she started to zone out. She thought a lot about her past with Vanessa Taylor. Back when she first met Marcus Parker, aside from Vanessa Taylor, no one supported her.
It was only Vanessa Taylor who said, "In the world of love, there is no distinction between ’the other woman’ and ’the wife,’ nor is there any clear right or wrong—it’s all just a matter of timing."
If it hadn’t been for Vanessa Taylor, she thought, she might not have held on to this love until now. Maybe she would have heeded her parents’ advice halfway through and married some ordinary man, living an ordinary life instead.
