Chapter 626: Chapter 626: To Each Their Own (6)

"Well, go ahead and explain your reason then." Gary Skate put down the work in his hands indifferently, leaning back and raising his eyebrows as he looked at Carolline Ruiz. "I know you’re Henry Ruiz’s daughter, and I know you work diligently. You’re a role model in our hospital, just like your father. He’s worked for so many decades, and if I remember correctly, he hasn’t taken a single leave of absence."

The implication was clear: if her father hadn’t taken any time off, shouldn’t she, as his daughter, follow in his footsteps? He had just taken office, and Carolline was already asking for a day off verbally; wasn’t this a slap in his face?

Of course, Carolline did not understand Gary Skate’s distorted thoughts at this moment.

"Indeed, my father hasn’t, because he’s been lucky. In his many years of work, he hasn’t encountered any special situations. We are ordinary people, and life is full of uncertainties. We are not gods, so we can’t predict when something inevitable will happen. Yesterday, one of my friends had a car accident. She didn’t have any family, so I stayed with her until she was fully awake."

Carolline gave a brief account of what had happened, and that’s why she had been delayed a day.

"Miss Ruiz, you really do put righteousness first. This time, I’ll let it slide and keep the leave slip with me, but I don’t want there to be a next time. Don’t say that it’s just a friend who’s had an accident; even if it’s your family, I hope you’ll adhere to medical ethics. We are doctors and nurses who save lives and heal the wounded. Our mission is to serve our patients and put them first."

"Dean Skate, I’m sorry, but I cannot promise you that there won’t be a next time." Carolline looked at the new dean in front of her, no wonder he became the First Hospital Dean at such a young age. Relying on his so-called impartiality, or, to put it more nicely, his impartiality; to put it less nicely, his lack of human touch. "I have many friends, and whether they’re friends or family, I’ll always be there for them when something happens. As I just said, we doctors and nurses are not gods, but ordinary people. Since we’re ordinary people, we can all enjoy the rights they have. So, if Dean Skate feels that my reason for the leave is insufficient, then just deal with it according to the rules and regulations. I have no further comments."

Carolline expressed herself very clearly, as she was always a straightforward person who did not flatter anyone or say any pretty words, especially when facing her superiors.

For so many years, there had been no room for promotion except for becoming a head nurse. She didn’t plan to continue rising through the ranks.

"..." Gary Skate watched as Carolline expressed her opinion and then turned and left his office. He still had things to say, but she didn’t listen and just walked away.

Carolline waited for the elevator on the next floor down after leaving by the stairs. Megan Clifton had been paying attention to the situation outside and ran out as soon as she saw Carolline come down, "How did it go?"

"What else? I handed in my leave slip, and he can do whatever he wants with it. Anyway, I’m going back to work now." Carolline pressed the elevator button, looking completely unconcerned.

"You... You weren’t scared by his attitude?" It was obvious that everyone else at work today was more serious, and nobody dared to laze around in the office, except her.

"What’s there to be scared about? Just do our own work and follow the rules and regulations." Carolline had just finished speaking when the elevator doors opened, and Gary Skate was standing inside, hearing her words fall into his ears.

"Hmm, I quite agree with Nurse Ruiz’s words. Director Clifton, did you need to take a walk so soon after coming to work?" He would not have been so polite if it weren’t for the fact that she was pregnant.
