Chapter 554: Chapter 554: Defy the Battle (8)
In that moment, Jane Auclair felt somewhat embarrassed, she quickly nudged Mrs. Duncan in hope to get her to stop. However, Mrs. Duncan was stubborn. "Call your leader, I want to lodge a complaint against you." she insisted.
"..." The staff member was speechless. Even if they called the leader, compensation was still necessary. Another staff member who found Jane Auclair sensible turned to her, "Miss, this is a trivial matter. If the leader is brought here, nothing will change. Besides, paying for damaged property is something even a primary school student understands, right?"
Jane Auclair’s face looked worse than before. Her father, Mr. Auclair, already disliked Mrs. Duncan strongly. If he found out that Mrs. Duncan had caused a scene in his hospital, he would definitely look down on her or her mother in the future.
She couldn’t let her mother, who had single-handedly raised her under tough conditions, be affected. So she quickly pulled Mrs. Duncan aside to reason with her, even if she was not very comfortable with the words of the staff member who had just spoken.
But that wasn’t the time to quibble over such matters.
With Jane Auclair’s persuasions, Mrs. Duncan finally calmed down a bit, still begrudgingly uttering one final remark: "Just consider this a donation to the dogs." Many present at the scene looked visibly upset by this.
The staff shook their heads, onlookers murmured about the audacity of Mrs. Duncan. Some even filmed the incident and immediately uploaded it online, captioned, "The most outrageous woman around, have you seen her? Challenge accepted."
Carolline Ruiz stood at the back of the crowd, silently observing everything that transpired.
"Do you think this old hag is mentally ill?" Lottie Mitchell, who was now pregnant and reassigned to work at the reception due to concerns for her health, asked.
"Everyone knows what she’s like. Just wait, within a day, she’s likely to become a new internet sensation." Carolline Ruiz replied with unusual satisfaction.
In this era, big and small incidents on the street are all likely to be filmed by some enthusiastic videographers, be they touching or infuriating.
This old hag from the Duncan family was certainly heading towards the latter category, and Carolline Ruiz could imagine how the netizens would react.
"Won’t it be hard for you like this? If you can’t cope, why not take leave and rest at home?" Carolline Ruiz advised Lottie.
"No need, I’ll just go with nature’s rule of survival of the fittest. If he’s meant to be mine, he’ll cling on firmly. If there’s no mother-child destiny between us, I’ll leave it up to fate." Lottie’s approach was quite open-minded.
"..." Carolline Ruiz likewise agreed that the survival of the fittest applied to childbirth too. Humans were no different from other animals. Sometimes, babies born to mothers who had spent their entire pregnancy in overload of protective measures still ended up with weak constitutions and frequently fell ill, which caused much worry to the adults.
Carolline Ruiz nodded, advising Lottie to rest more, before returning to her work in the office room.
She then had to adjust her work schedule because she planned to take consecutive days off to bring Axel out for a trip, the usual vacationary activity of her family during summer vacation.
After discussing with Henry Ruiz over the phone, they decided on the 10th to the 15th of this month for the vacation, considering today was already the 6th, they only had four more days.
During lunch at home, she shared the good news with Axel, making him excited. "Mum, will dad be coming with us this year?" He asked.
"Let’s ask him later, he might not necessarily be able to go." Carolline Ruiz didn’t want to make a promise on behalf of Bryan Hawkins.
Axel’s excitement immediately halved. Emily Hill consoled him, "Your dad will definitely come. Look at your mom, she’s so busy and still found time for this. Your dad loves you so much that he will definitely tag along with you and your mom."
With this, even Carolline Ruiz was teased. Bryan’s persistency was too well-known by now.
That night, Bryan Hawkins came to pick up his wife and son to go home. Axel then joyfully broke the news about the trip to him. Bryan turned to Carolline and asked, "why didn’t you call me about this earlier?"
Hearing this, Axel’s face fell. "Dad, we still have four days left, can’t you adjust your schedule?"
"Of course, I can. But it seems a little unfair that I am the last one to know, doesn’t it?" Bryan started to pout. Carolline Ruiz, who was sitting in the passenger seat, couldn’t be bothered to react and just rolled her eyes.
Axel chuckled, as long as his father could make it, everything was fine.
Carolline Ruiz continued with her quiet rest.
"To celebrate this good news, let’s go out for a good meal tonight, how about it?" Bryan suggested.
"Great!" Axel clapped his hands in joy. "Mom, Aunt Daisy and Elena haven’t left yet, right? Let’s invite them to join us."
"Didn’t we already have a feast prepared by Aunt Daisy just yesterday? And now you want to eat out again? Are you getting too used to this?" Carolline Ruiz was somewhat speechless at these two.
"It’s precisely because Aunt Daisy prepared dinner for us yesterday that we should invite her in return. Didn’t you teach me since I was young, that if someone treats us well, we should respond with even greater kindness?" Axel’s logic was incredibly strong, and at times left Carolline Ruiz without a suitable rebuttal.
And she was often left speechless by his arguments.
Hence, Carolline Ruiz eventually had no choice but to call Daisy Willow. On hearing her laughter, Bryan was visibly pleased.
Daisy Willow had already started cooking dinner and had even soaked the rice. As they were leaving for their old house early next morning, Daisy politely declined Carolline’s kind offer. However, she did invite them over for dinner if they were willing, as she had plenty of food.
Carolline Ruiz consulted Axel, who agreed with the arrangement. She then asked if they needed to bring anything over and hung up after finalizing the plans.
In reality, they did not buy many ingredients. Once again, Bryan indulged Axel and ordered two steak meals to be delivered to Daisy’s place. He then bought two buckets of KFC and some drinks from the supermarket. But of course, this spree of junk food purchase was done stealthily while Carolline was out buying fruits.
When Carolline found out, she could only frown and shake her head.
"After tonight, you won’t be having junk food for a month, including during our trip. Do remember that." Carolline sternly warned and gave Bryan a look before getting into the car.
The father and son looked at each other and stuck out their tongues. They knew they had crossed Carolline’s line and obediently complied.
