Chapter 514: Chapter 514: Chaos in the Courtroom (9)
At this moment, Cole Duncan only had one request. He didn’t care whether Daisy Willow demanded half or even more than half of the Duncan family’s property. However, he instructed the lawyer to secure custody of Elena Duncan for him at all costs.
Previously, Cole’s mother had shown him photos of Simon Carrington and Daisy Willow. He never thought that Daisy could betray him like that, but today, witnessing Simon protecting Daisy, something inside him was inexplicably triggered.
Daisy was hiding behind Simon like a tiny bird seeking shelter, and Cole didn’t know why but the sight made him feel bitter. He realized that he had never pampered or cherished Daisy as Simon seemed to be doing.
Ever since their first meeting, Cole’s mother continuously criticized Daisy, saying that she wasn’t a suitable wife for the Duncan family. Cole loved this woman, but his love only made her endure his mother’s excessively malicious behavior.
For instance, just now, Cole was sitting next to his mother and could have stopped her with just a stretch of his hand, but he didn’t. Instead, Simon stepped in to protect Daisy.
The lawyer was hired by Jane Auclair, who had clearly stated that they should try their best to secure custody of Elena, but if they failed, it didn’t matter. They could give up some of their property, but only up to two million. Now, the opposing party was demanding half of the Duncan family’s assets, and they weren’t prepared for this. For a moment, Cole didn’t know how to fight back.
Simon continued presenting their litigation demands and submitted all their evidence to the judge.
There were photos of Cole with his previous lovers, and Jane Auclair was living proof, as she constantly stayed by Cole’s side. Moreover, the hospital records showed that Jane miscarried due to a car accident at People Hospital, and the child she lost was Cole’s, which couldn’t be denied.
There wasn’t any evidence of paternity between Jane’s miscarried child and Cole in their hands, but the hospital had that evidence. If the judge needed it, it could be obtained following proper legal procedures.
Simon believed that the Duncan family wouldn’t allow the evidence to be obtained, which would further prove that they had a guilty conscience.
Simon was confident with the solid evidence he presented and was hopeful about the upcoming trial outcome.
"Does the defendants’ side have anything to add?" The judge inquired about Cole’s side’s opinion.
The lawyer pulled out prepared materials and began to argue against Simon’s claims one by one. As he argued, his confidence gradually faded. Jane, who was watching from the gallery, also grew anxious.
In the end, she directly sent a message to the lawyer, who stood up and said, "Your Honor, our side requests an adjournment. We would like to discuss with the plaintiff privately. Moreover, we do not agree with the plaintiff’s litigation request. My client has serious suspicions that the plaintiff and her attorney have an improper relationship and that they are plotting to seize half of my client’s property. We need time to investigate."
As soon as the lawyer’s words were uttered, the courtroom was in an uproar. Daisy’s father turned ashen-faced. The Duncans and their lawyer had skillfully turned the tables on them.
"...That’s slander, sheer slander. Your Honor, my relationship with Mr. Carrington is purely professional. There is no inappropriate relationship between us as they have imagined," Daisy couldn’t stand it any longer. Simon’s eloquence had given her hope of victory, but this lawyer’s accusation made her feel like she was being unfairly targeted.
Simon tried to prevent Daisy from refuting the accusation, but it was too late. The judge frowned and eventually decided to adjourn the court, postponing the trial to the Friday of the week after next.
Upon hearing this result, Daisy slumped into her chair like a pile of mud. Victory seemed so close, but the malicious accusations from the opposing lawyer and Cole’s mother’s outburst had ruined her chances. She was filled with resentment and anger.
As they sat across from each other, Cole observed Daisy’s lifeless demeanor, remaining silent. Firstly, he didn’t expect such a demand from their side. Secondly, his silence aimed to show Daisy his determination as a father to keep Elena.
Seeing Cole’s expression, Daisy couldn’t hold back anymore and charged towards him, furiously attacking him. "Cole Duncan, I must have been blind to have met a man like you in my life! How can you not know the kind of woman I am? Do you think I’d do the same thing as you, hooking up with someone else while we’re still married?"
Not everyone could shamelessly act in the way that Cole and his mother had. Daisy wanted to scream.
"What do you want from me? What will it take for you to give me Elena? Your mother doesn’t like her, and you can’t take care of her now. Elena is your daughter! Can you please let her go?" Daisy cried as she yelled, feeling a sense of injustice on behalf of her daughter.
Thinking of what her little girl’s future might look like if she stayed with her father filled Daisy with anguish. Could he really destroy his own daughter’s life?
Cole let Daisy attack him, watching her emotions gradually dissipate. Then he casually asked, "What if we don’t divorce? Is that okay?"
