Chapter 464: Chapter 464: Wishes Come True (8)
"Grandpa, can you hold Elena, please?" Elena looked back and forth between her mother and grandfather, then suddenly asked Daisy’s father in a clear, soft voice.
"...Alright." Daisy’s father seemed dazed and flattered, deeply touched. He was a rough and tough old man, while Elena was a tender, porcelain doll-like little princess. The fact that she had initiated a hug from him made him feel as though happiness was bubbling up around him, enveloping him completely.
He held Elena very carefully, cradling her as though she was a newborn baby. He was cautious and apprehensive, stiff with fear of dropping her or accidentally hurting her with his rough skin.
Daisy, observing her father’s movements, knew that he was being overly cautious. "Dad, Elena isn’t a baby anymore, so you don’t have to be so nervous."
"I...I’m not nervous!" Her father was the kind of person who would immediately argue when caught off guard, not wanting to admit to anything.
"Alright, alright. You’re not nervous, but we are. We’re all scared to death by your frown." Daisy’s mother laughed, then poured a cup of tea and handed it to Daisy. "Your father is just like that. Give him this cup of tea and it’ll all be fine."
"Thanks, Mom." Daisy took the tea and knelt before her father, sincerely apologizing and repenting for her past mistakes. It was her disobedience that had led her to this point in her life. Fortunately, it wasn’t too late to change things, as she still had two-thirds of her life left to live.
Daisy’s mother watched her daughter and couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. In the end, she could only sigh softly, not saying much else.
Her father, touched by Daisy’s apology, had only wanted to hear his daughter say sorry. But seeing her kneeling down on the rough, hard ground – a girl who had always been as delicate as her own granddaughter – brought pain to his heart. He had always been distressed when she’d been hurt as a child, but now she was kneeling here before him.
"Dad, I’m sorry for my disobedience all those years ago. I didn’t listen to you and Mom, and I went with Cole instead. Now I’ve come back like this, it must be God’s punishment for my stubbornness back then. Dad, Mom, I’m not young anymore, I’m sorry for letting you down. Please don’t be angry with me, I know I was wrong and I won’t do it again."
Daisy said this while holding the tea, her face covered in tears.
"Old man, let Daisy stand up." Her mother, witnessing her daughter sobbing, couldn’t bear it. She wiped away her tears as she stood on the sidelines, not knowing what had happened to her daughter. Even if she wanted to ask, she had to let Daisy stand up and speak, not just kneel there. The ground in the countryside wasn’t like the city; it was damp and, if one kneeled for too long, it could cause arthritis.
"...Stand up." Her father took the cup of tea and drank it down.
Elena was stunned by her mother’s actions, sitting quietly in her grandfather’s lap without saying a word.
"Sit down, let’s talk." Daisy’s mother walked over, led Daisy to a chair, and sat down beside her.
"What happened? Did the Duncan family mistreat you?" Her father had opposed the relationship years ago, but Cole had sworn to treat Daisy well for the rest of their lives. If Cole had mistreated Daisy, her father wouldn’t let him off easily.
Not believing his oath was one thing, but mistreating Daisy was another. In the past two years, they had purposely prevented their eldest son from prying into Daisy’s life, so they had no idea about the events that had transpired within the Duncan family. They didn’t know that Daisy was planning to get a divorce.
If they had known, they wouldn’t have allowed the Duncan family to mistreat Daisy like this, even if they were severely outmatched. Her father would have fought against the Duncans, even if it cost him his life.
"..." Daisy slowly recounted her decision to divorce Cole, including the fact that she could no longer bear children after giving birth to Elena and almost dying from blood loss. To ensure the Duncan family had an heir, Cole had followed his mother’s orders and continued to look for women to give birth to a son for the family, until Jane Auclair got pregnant.
She had always intended to divorce him; it’s just that things happened between Cole and Jane before they could discuss it. However, this did not deter her from wanting a divorce.
Daisy explained everything concisely, revealing most of the facts while keeping certain details hidden. She didn’t mention Cole’s mother’s dislike for Elena, the drama that had occurred at the Duncan family house, or the fact that Elena had been slapped by her grandmother. She didn’t tell her parents these things.
She knew her father’s temperament all too well. If she had revealed this information, he would have grabbed a hoe and stormed the Duncan family home to demand justice for her and Elena.
As her father had aged, she didn’t want to burden him with such impulsive actions, especially since she had already decided to divorce Cole.
However, even with so much information withheld, when her father heard what she had to say, he was furious and wanted to go to G City to confront the Duncan family. Daisy and her mother managed to stop him. "Alright, old man, don’t be impulsive. Daisy said she’s divorcing that scumbag Cole."
As long as she divorced him, Daisy would have a better life.
"Tell me, what kind of life have you been living? Where did you find your lawyer and how confident are you?" Her father knew that they needed a lawyer to deal with the Duncan family.
"Well, my friend helped me find a lawyer from Kyoto. I’m pretty confident in him." Daisy had faith in Simon Carrington’s abilities.
"Elena, did you oppose the divorce?" Her mother asked quietly, having been too emotional before to notice Elena’s feelings as they discussed her parents’ divorce in front of her.
"Grandma, I don’t like my grandma. She slapped me." Elena said loudly. Even though she had promised her mother not to talk about it on the way here, she still felt very sad about that day’s experience, and, to this day, she had nightmares about it.
"What?" Both grandparents shouted in unison, finding it inconceivable.
How could anyone slap such an adorable child like Elena?
Afterwards, Daisy spent a long time explaining the situation. The family was so engrossed in catching up that they even forgot to make lunch.
Later, their elder brother and his wife came back from tending to the family shop and saw Daisy. In a more straightforward manner, he invited the whole family to a restaurant for lunch, where they all talked some more. That night, Daisy and Elena went to bed quite late.
Today was Daisy’s third day at home, having spent two nights already. If she didn’t have to go back to G City to finalize the divorce, she wouldn’t want to leave home at all.
Listening to the lively voices coming from the living room, this simple happiness was what ordinary people like them yearned for in life.
