Chapter 310: Chapter 310: His Threat (8)

Afterwards, she quit her job, left the hospital, and stopped being a nurse.

She had a dream when she was young, which was to become a chef. How she ended up learning to make cakes was a sort of coincidence. Anyway, she slowly fell in love with dessert-making. Every time she’d step into the shop and put on her white chef’s uniform, the sense of pride she felt was similar to when she used to wear her nursing attire. Then, she would pour all her heart into baking the tastiest cakes.

"Was it for this trifling issue that you kept pestering me ever since I came back? Is that it?" Avery Graham felt aggrieved. If she had known sooner that he had been brooding over this issue for so long, she would have clarified things earlier.

The reason she didn’t say anything before was because she didn’t want to be the sort of person who, despite knowing they are about to leave, attempts to ruin a mother-son relationship. She figured that when Bernard’s mom came looking for her, it was surely out of love for her son. Whether this love would hurt others was something most mothers wouldn’t consider.

She refrained from being rude to Bernard’s mom because of their mother-son bond. Otherwise, how could she tolerate being pointed at and insulted by a stranger?

"..." This woman’s inability to hold back a curse was really something, thought Bernard, frowning.

"If you want to know, I’ll tell you. But I hope that from now on you’ll stop disturbing my life, okay? Your mom did come to find me. She probably misunderstood our relationship, which is why she came looking for me. She wanted me to be aware of myself. Actually, I don’t have many strengths, but self-awareness is my only one. I won’t aspire to you, and much less to your family. After I made that clear to your mom, she didn’t bother me again. Also... I’ve found someone I like now."

Upon hearing the last sentence, his eyebrows furrowed even more intensely.

"Is that so? I thought you still wanted to be a nurse. It seems I misunderstood again." Bernard suddenly smoothed his furrowed brow.

"Thanks, but I’m happy baking cakes now. Besides, being my own boss means I don’t have to put up with anyone’s nonsense," Avery answered with some resentment, referring to the time when she had had to put up with Bernard’s difficult tendencies.

"Hm, makes sense," he nodded, agreeing with her words, "It’s getting late. You should get some rest."

"..." Avery was taken aback. Was that it? Was he going to stop bothering her now?

"What’s the matter? You’re going to miss me?" Bernard suddenly burst into laughter.

Avery immediately opened the car door. But just as she was about to get out, Bernard spoke up again, "You know, the cakes and bread from your shop aren’t very sweet. They’re perfect for me. Let’s make it a daily order for my coffee and sandwiches, okay? If you think we need to sign a contract or anything like that, you prepare it and I’ll come sign it first thing tomorrow morning. Here’s a deposit."

Bernard took out a stack of bills from his wallet and handed them to Avery.

"Why can’t you find another cake shop?" Avery eyed the thick stack of money. Being an ordinary person, she was not immune to the lure of money.

But then she pondered, was he planning to have breakfast at her cake shop for the rest of his life with this hefty deposit?

She felt hesitant again.

"We’re both doing business here. You’d do it for others as well, wouldn’t you? So, are you afraid of doing business with me?" Bernard provocatively questioned her.

"Who said I’m afraid! I just don’t want to," Avery stubbornly retorted.

This Bernard, his words are getting more and more venomous by the day.

"Since you’re not afraid, then take it. It’s not like I’m going to eat this stuff every single day. Sometimes I also have porridge. I remember someone once told me that drinking coffee on an empty stomach is not good, so I no longer drink coffee on an empty stomach."
