Chapter 309: Chapter 309: His Threat (7)

Bernard Taylor is also a doctor, a professional who needs to be on call twenty-four hours a day, so the moments he gets to rest are precious and should be seized.

She didn’t want to disturb his rest either. After all, while she detested him, patients found him agreeable, and his medical skills were indeed admirable. Even if she didn’t like him as a person, she had to admit that for someone his age, such skills were truly commendable.

"It’s the same question again. Did my mum have a talk with you before you left?" Bernard was aware that his mum had seen Avery; his mother confessed it. But he was to hear this from Avery herself.

When he found out years ago that Avery had met his mother before leaving, he was furious, shocked and full of anger. Ever since a terrible irreparable incident happened in his life, Bernard’s temperament had changed. He had become colder, quieter, and more reserved.

His emotions and desires, it seemed, had vanished with the death of that person, as if that person had taken away all of Bernard’s vitality. For many years, Bernard had stooped to melancholy, and suddenly, he began laughing again. But no one knew precisely when this change took place.

Lady Taylor was thrilled, thinking that finally, the right person had entered Bernard’s life to revive him. But to her surprise, this person turned to be Avery, a young nurse with no significant family background.

Provided Avery could brighten up Bernard’s life, Lady Taylor was willing to accept her. But the nurse didn’t seem to even consider Bernard worthy of attention.

That day, when she went to see Avery, she overheard a conversation between her and another nurse. It sounded like Avery was explaining that her relationship with Bernard was not what people thought. Moreover, she even said some harsh things about Bernard, using words that Lady Taylor, as his mother, found utterly unacceptable.

How could such a vulgar and unrefined woman be suitable for their princely Bernard? Even standing beside him was something Lady Taylor considered beyond her qualification, let alone becoming a part of the Taylor Family.

As a result, her initial intention of expressing gratitude to Avery ended up turning into a melodramatic scene like in Idol Dramas, where she offered money to Avery to leave Bernard, and quit her job as a nurse, in essence, she endeavoured to buy off Avery’s dreams.

Avery was initially resistant, especially by Lady Taylor’s actions, which she found humiliating. She refused the cheque. Even though her family was not wealthy, they would never degrade themselves by accepting charity.

This act of humiliating the poor with money seemed to be a favourite tactic of the rich. She couldn’t comprehend why they chose to demean others with their wealth instead of aiding those who are genuinely in need.

So, Bernard was brought up in such a family! No wonder his pompous attitude disgusted her.

To her, these so-called rich, handsome, and noble men were simply detestable; born with a silver spoon, they were social parasites as the older sister Shan once put it.

Living off their parents’ fortune, they flaunched around pretending that they were born better than others, but, given a choice, Avery would prefer a man whom others look down upon –a phoenix man— because they understand the meaning of hard work.

Life is different from movies. As much as she wanted to tear up the cheque in Lady Taylor’s face, she eventually didn’t do it and chose to walk away, letting Lady Taylor pick up the pieces herself.
