Chapter 300: Chapter 300: Craving for Meat (6)
But people around her often told her that Bernard Taylor was really good to her, a notion she never realized. In the end, Bernard suffered numerous scornful looks and hidden schemes because of her.
Her decision to leave the hospital and quit being a nurse was due to an incident she didn’t want to share with anyone. After returning, she truly didn’t want anything to do with him, but this man just wouldn’t leave her be.
When she used to prepare breakfast for him, it would be milk and bread, but Bernard only wanted coffee and a sandwich. Back then, she casually mentioned that drinking coffee on an empty stomach wasn’t good. He gave her a cold glance and said, "You wouldn’t be harboring any inappropriate thoughts about me, would you?"
His words infuriated her so much that she almost threw the coffee in his face. She had never encountered such a narcissistic and overconfident person. She slammed what he wanted down on the table, "Don’t worry, I, Avery Graham, have no such intentions. I know my place. You’re so sought-after; how could I? Put your heart back in your stomach. It’s just that you’re a pretty boy, right?"
She wanted to say it in a mocking tone, but he had a major surgery that day, so she didn’t want to cause any trouble due to her momentary anger.
Those words did get under his skin back then. Avery still remembers the look on his face and how he seemed to want to kill her. But she was quick to run away.
Their interactions were like this: they would always say things that infuriated each other and sometimes even physically clashed. She couldn’t understand how others thought they got along well and even started rumors in the Second Hospital that they were dating.
She was dumbfounded by the gossip, especially since some people believed it. Someone even confronted her, telling her she wasn’t good enough for Bernard - she was the toad, and he was the swan.
She didn’t say much in response, only stating that this toad didn’t want to eat swan meat - at least, she, as the toad, had no interest in Bernard, the swan.
Then she proved through her actions that she had no inappropriate intentions towards him. On the day she left, she walked away confidently without looking back. It was only then that he understood that Avery truly had no interest in him.
After that day, Bernard couldn’t help but think about her. He went through several nurses, but always found himself remembering Avery.
He started to wonder if he was sick, as he never planned to fall in love or marry. How could he allow another woman to occupy his heart so frequently? Whenever he had free time, he would visit the cemetery.
That was his therapy, and it worked for a while.
What he didn’t know was that Avery was forced to leave by some people. He thought she left because she couldn’t bear his quirks. At the time, he didn’t try to keep her because he believed that her work and life were unhappy with him around.
What was the point? While he had found enjoyment in his own life, involving an innocent woman wasn’t his style. Hence, when Avery left, he didn’t do anything to stop her.
However, someone went behind his back and did something that made Avery feel wronged. He felt guilty, so when he found out that Avery had returned, he had always wanted to be nicer to her. Unfortunately, this woman would fiercely resist whenever she saw him.
