Chapter 286: Chapter 286: They All Want to Do Well (8)

Women are inevitably drawn to gossip, and Joyce Lopez is no exception. In the few months she has spent at home taking care of her child, she has become somewhat bored. Besides, she can tell from the woman on the other end of the line that she is not aggressive or intrusive, so it should be fine for them to chat for a while.

"...Uh, no, I’m not," Carolline hesitated for a moment before answering. She didn’t know what Joyce was thinking, it’s already so late, even her secretary should have left work.

"Then who are you...?" Joyce became even more curious, so if she’s not a secretary, could she be his girlfriend?

The reason she guessed the secretary was that Bryan Hawkins had been a workaholic before, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he had called his secretary to work late into the night with him.

"Who is it, Carolline? You’ve been talking for so long." At this moment, Bryan handed her two cups of freshly brewed coffee, only to find Carolline chatting with the person on the other end of his phone.

"Carolline?!" Joyce was astonished at the sound of Bryan’s voice, she had never expected that Bryan and Carolline would still be together so late.

So the relationship between Bryan and Carolline wasn’t as simple as she initially thought.

How infuriating! It was Carolline, a woman she had never taken seriously, who managed to win Bryan’s love and become the miracle in his life.

"I don’t know, she wanted to talk to you, you talk to her." Carolline didn’t hear Joyce’s uncontrollable muttering and simply returned the phone to him.

It was unbelievable how she had picked up his phone and chatted with a woman who was looking for him for so long.

"Hello," Bryan looked at her in confusion, then picked up the phone, "Joyce? Uh, you were saying...?"

Carolline didn’t know what Joyce said on the phone. However, when she heard Joyce’s name, she inexplicably trembled, and some coffee from the cup spilled onto her hand; with the current weather, it was quite painful.

Carolline put down her coffee cup and frowned. Bryan, who had been watching her, saw her get burned and hung up the phone, "Joyce, let’s talk about this tomorrow."

Bryan rushed towards her, "Are you okay? You have to be more careful."

Seeing the red mark on her hand, Bryan dragged her to the kitchen sink to rinse it off. Carolline thought he was overreacting, but after rinsing it with cold water, it felt much better.

"It’s fine now," she reminded him, after about a minute of running cold water. She actually wanted to pull her hand back but his grip was too tight and she couldn’t move.

"Don’t move, let me rinse it a bit more," Bryan insisted until he felt it was enough, then Carolline’s hand left the faucet, "How about applying some burn ointment?"

"No need, it’s just a small area, it’ll be fine." Carolline felt that it was unnecessary.

"Alright," Bryan didn’t push further and led her outside to the open rooftop. The stars were shining brightly, it was exceptionally beautiful.

Bryan also took some imported snacks from the refrigerator and placed them on the coffee table. At that time, he remembered that Carolline was quite fond of these imported snacks.

True to her gluttonous nature, Carolline couldn’t help but take a piece of imported chocolate late at night. She peeled off the wrapper, and as the delicious chocolate melted in her mouth, its smooth and rich flavor made her happy.

Bryan just smiled when he saw her enjoying the chocolate. He followed suit and unwrapped a piece for himself as well.

"Carolline, can you tell me what happened the day you proposed a divorce agreement to me?" The conversation began in a peaceful atmosphere, and Bryan’s tone was calm and unhurried.

"..." Carolline took a sip of her coffee, not knowing how to explain back then. She felt that it was just because she was in a bad mood, but communication was necessary for them, whether it was about the past or the future. "Well, that day, I had just found out that I was pregnant."

Suddenly, Bryan stood up, startling Carolline. As if she were a child, Carolline found herself lifted horizontally by him and then turned upside down on his lap. Bryan then slapped her butt three times.

Carolline’s face immediately flushed red, and she stuttered in anger when Bryan turned her back around, "You, you, you..."

She couldn’t find any words to continue, she never would have thought that Bryan would do something as embarrassing as spanking her. Ever since she turned three, her parents had never done that to her again.

"What? I just spanked you, so what? I’m telling you, I couldn’t stand it anymore. I can’t believe that you proposed a divorce right after finding out you were pregnant. How could you be so heartless?"

How heartless, to let him assume that the child in her stomach was Andy Aguirre’s, even he could hardly believe his own stupidity for not seeing through the misunderstanding.

And so, for an incomprehensible reason, they had been separated for five years.

"I, I, I..." Carolline stuttered again, astounded by Bryan’s righteous indignation.

Of course, she couldn’t articulate her words because she was in the wrong to begin with.

"Carolline, how could you be so foolish? I still remember everything that happened that day. I had just closed a big deal and I was overjoyed to hear that you had come to Bluen Lake Wonderland. I had to entertain people that night and I came back late, afraid that I would wake you up, so I didn’t go to the room. The next day, you gave me such a fright."

"..." Carolline didn’t speak, she knew he hadn’t finished talking.

"That morning, I was going to wait until you finished breakfast to tell you that I would handle George Morris’s issue and then we could announce our marriage to the public after our wedding. But I was never able to bring it up because you had me against the wall with that divorce agreement."

"That night, when I heard you come back, I was still awake, waiting for you to come in, but you didn’t, so I just..." Carolline hesitated for a while before finally she managed to stutter out her explanation.

Bryan was astonished and finally realized their mutual misunderstandings. It seemed that they both made mistakes in their assumptions and because of this, their misunderstandings had grown deeper and deeper.

Soon, the two of them began to share all their thoughts and feelings from the past few years that they had kept hidden.

As they talked, their coffee on the coffee table became cold, and the snacks were left untouched.

As they continued to communicate, Bryan’s arms around Carolline tightened, but she didn’t seem to notice...
