Chapter 231: Chapter 231: Time Flies (5)
"Avery has always refused Bernard on the grounds that she doesn’t like men who are even prettier than women," Carolline said. This reason was bizarre enough, and Bernard’s compliments had no effect on the unyielding Avery.
"..." Megan, too, was hearing this absurd reason for rejection for the first time. She couldn’t blame Avery, though. Bernard was indeed an exceptionally talented man in many aspects, bordering on perfection with hardly any weaknesses.
Initially, Bernard resorted to trickery to force Avery into becoming his personal assistant. This infuriated her to the point of harboring a lifelong grudge against him. Later, to escape being at Bernard’s mercy, she simply changed careers. She submitted her resignation directly to the Dean’s Office of their hospital. When Bernard found out, Avery had already packed her bags and swiftly left his office.
It wasn’t easy for Avery, who had studied nursing, to change careers. Hailing from a relatively wealthy family, she had opened a coffee shop, a flower shop, and even a bookstore. However, none of her ventures were long-lasting. Even with Bernard’s constant patronage, it seemed as if Avery was simply not cut out for doing business. In the end, she always lost money – the only difference being how much she lost.
When Avery later considered opening another store, her family elders objected. So, she found another job. Then, on Axel’s birthday, she discovered his love for birthday cakes, igniting her desire to open a cake shop. This time, however, she didn’t act recklessly. Instead, she spent two years traveling and learning how to make cakes.
Upon her return, she opened a cake shop named after her – ’Avery’s Handmade Workshop.’ As the name suggests, eating a cake made by Avery would undoubtedly bring joy.
Avery ultimately decided to open a cake shop because Bernard didn’t have a sweet tooth. With a typical male aversion to sugary treats, men like him not only rejected desserts but loathed them.
So, Avery was certain that Bernard would never come to harass her at her store. She knew, from her experience of serving Bernard, that he didn’t even want to get close to dessert shops. Just the distant smell of those sweet flavors would cause a symbolic frown on his face.
However, little did Avery know that her plan had completely backfired. Once her shop was open, not only did Bernard stop avoiding her, he showed up whenever he had free time. To top it off, before leaving, he would help her clear out anything not sold throughout the day.
Avery was so infuriated, she wanted to throw in the towel altogether. Yet, against all odds, the workshop made her a profit. When her parents heard her talking about closing shop, they demanded that she repay her previous debts first.
Regretfully calculating her losses, Avery realized that it would take her at least a year or two to pay off her previous debts before she could close the cake shop. She had no choice but to persist and continue operating. Besides, she had grown to love the feeling of making cakes by hand over those two years.
Avery often marveled at how things had changed. Once upon a time, she had been wholeheartedly committed to becoming a good nurse, assisting Henry Ruiz in performing various surgical procedures in the operating room. Now, however, she had become a passionate pastry chef. Time can indeed change a person, and in her case, it was a significant alteration.
Five years had passed, and they had all changed in their own ways, gradually maturing in the process.
Even Mia Parker and Lucy Wade. Mia was said to still reject love and marriage. Ever since Bryan Hawkins publicly declared his decision to remain unmarried, her beliefs were influenced by his views, and she decided to stay single for life. This infuriated both her father and mother, but they couldn’t do anything about it.
