Chapter 1034: System paralysis, good things come in pairs
Before going to the Civil Affairs Bureau, Bernard Taylor and Avery Graham went out to eat. After the meal, Bernard drove directly to the Civil Affairs Bureau in the City District.
Since they were getting married, Bernard was actually very nervous. He barely touched his food, feeling full after just a few bites, whereas Avery had two bowls of rice, earnestly filling her stomach.
She didn’t know what kind of tricks Bernard might have up his sleeve after they got their marriage certificate. Anyway, she had agreed to it, accepted the flowers in public, and put on the ring, so she had clearly made up her mind.
Throughout the drive, Bernard didn’t speak at all, but Avery appeared remarkably calm and collected. Even though she felt a flutter of excitement in her heart, compared to Bernard, her reactions were much more normal.
Alright, she would just assume this was Bernard’s first time and that’s why he was so nervous.
Damn it, it was her first time too, but why wasn’t she as nervous as Bernard? Looking at him, his knuckles were almost turning white from gripping the steering wheel so tightly.
"Are you really nervous or are you not feeling well?" Avery couldn’t help herself, genuinely worried that if Bernard wasn’t feeling well, they might get into an accident. Life was so beautiful, and she really didn’t want to die just yet.
The most important thing was that she hadn’t earned enough money yet. If she died, people would remember her as someone who didn’t pay off her debts, which would be a terrible impression to leave behind.
"..." Bernard didn’t respond, but gradually, his mood eased and his knuckles slowly returned to their normal color.
Bernard sped up a little, and when their car stopped in front of the Civil Affairs Bureau, it was just as the staff were coming back from their lunch break. As they were about to enter, Bernard, uncertain, asked, "Avery, did you bring all your documents?"
"... Oh, it seems like I didn’t bring that bag." Avery thought seriously for a moment, then suddenly screamed.
Then she saw Bernard’s face change. They would be delayed quite a bit by going back and forth. But what could they do? Without the proper documents, they couldn’t complete any procedures. Bernard re-fastened his seatbelt, preparing to go back for them. Avery, however, opened the car door and got out.
"Alright, let’s go, I was just teasing you. Look how nervous you are," Avery shook her head, now thinking that Bernard was not as mentally strong as her.
Bernard got out of the car to catch up with Avery and, in front of everyone, smacked her butt, "So naughty, let’s see how I deal with you tonight, kiddo."
"?" What did he mean by that? Deal with her tonight? The implication seemed to be that spending an afternoon together wasn’t enough, they needed a whole night?
What could possibly happen in one night?
Avery couldn’t help but let her imagination run wild. Although she was receptive to the idea, speaking about it openly during the day made her quite shy.
Moreover, she hadn’t done that yet—not that she wasn’t looking forward to it, but...
"Hurry up and follow," Bernard called from ahead, waiting for her, charmed by her dumbfounded expression. This demoness—couldn’t she let him not look forward to the night too soon?
To him, once they got the certificate and became husband and wife, they could move in together directly. Plus, he had bought a small apartment near his office, which was also not too far from their second store, so going to work was convenient for both of them.
He had just finished setting up the apartment a few days ago, buying many things, all in pairs. Therefore, Avery didn’t need to bring anything, she just had to come over.
They could celebrate in the evening and then head straight there.
That was his plan.
Avery caught up with him, and before they could enter the office lobby, they saw many people waiting, streaming out one after another—some looking frustrated, others calm, and a few enraged, cursing outright.
They were puzzled until they saw a Civil Affairs Bureau staff member placing an advertising board outside. Rushing over to read it, they found out the system had crashed. Neither marriages nor divorces could be processed that day, and there was no indication of when the system would be back online. People were advised to wait for further notice.
The Civil Affairs Bureau had a website, so everyone could also stay updated with the latest developments online.
Someone cursed SHIT, while a couple nearby embraced—the man was fuming, and the woman, with a round belly, tried to comfort him, "It’s okay, honey, if we have to come another day, then that’s what we’ll do."
"But today was an auspicious day specially picked by my mother. She said there isn’t another day as good as today for a whole month. Your belly is already showing. Are we really supposed to wait another month?" When speaking to his wife, the man softened instantly, but then the more he thought about it, the more indignant he felt, and he kicked over the advertising board in frustration.
