Chapter 298: Chapter 298: The Domineering Tenderness
His earnest and passionate response left Amelia feeling a bit embarrassed.
If his love for her was truly from the bottom of his heart, pure and unadulterated, then the shock he experienced this time must have been more terrifying and hopeless for him than if he himself had fallen from the seventh floor.
Suddenly unable to smile, she slowly pushed the man back a bit and looked at him, comforting in return, "Christopher, I’m fine... You saw, I’m perfectly alright."
Originally, the person who should have been comforted was her.
But seeing Christopher like this truly shattered her previous perception of him, and she couldn’t help but comfort him.
Thinking about her own good fortune, she mockingly said to herself, "It seems there’s some truth to your parents thinking I’m a calamity—they do say that a scourge lasts a thousand years."
"Don’t mind what they say." Christopher gazed at her, infatuated, lifting his hand to wipe the tears from her face.
Amelia lowered her eyes to look at his hand, then slowly lifted her gaze to his eyes.
"When... when did your eyes get better?"
Christopher looked at her exquisite and stunning features, observing them closely for the first time.
They were almost unchanged from the image of her in his memory from her teenage years, only upon closer inspection could he detect subtle changes.
Now this similarly enchanting face was more mature, more intellectual, more confident, and also more alluring—not like a girl in the throes of first love, with a face flushed with shyness and inexperience.
This was good; the independent and strong her wouldn’t be easily bullied or put through hardship anymore.
Seeing him stare at her as if in a trance without answering, Amelia furrowed her brows, "Hey, I’m talking to you!"
Christopher blinked, his gaze dropped slightly, noticeably evading the subject with guilt, "It... it just got better these past few days."
"Is that so? Why didn’t you say anything?" They were in touch every day, yet he didn’t mention such a big deal?
Seeing her look at him, Christopher glanced away again, "Wasn’t I thinking... of giving you a surprise when you came back?"
The onlookers Benny Palmer, Snow Fitch, and Lucas King all had strange expressions upon hearing this and turned their faces away.
Amelia gave them a sidelong glance and looked back at him, "Oh... I see."
She responded verbally, but understood in her heart that this guy probably never intended to tell her.
However, the plane crash incident disrupted his original "scheme."
As the atmosphere grew more peculiar, there was movement on the operation room’s side.
Amelia turned her head to see that the doctor who operated on Shaw was coming out.
She hastily turned and went to inquire about Shaw’s condition.
Christopher immediately relaxed, the guilt and relief in his eyes becoming even more obvious.
Benny stepped forward to push his wheelchair, murmuring, "It’s about time... tsk tsk."
"Shut up!" Mr. Hart, embarrassed and angry, spat out two words.
Amelia spoke with the doctor, learning that Shaw’s surgery had been very successful, but it would take a long time for the bones to heal, and she would need to recover over a long period.
None of this mattered to her.
As long as Shaw was alive and her legs could be saved, the rest were trivialities.
Worst case scenario, she would give Shaw half a year’s leave and let her recuperate peacefully.
Back in the hospital room, Shaw had already woken up from the anesthesia.
Seeing so many familiar faces, she was so moved she didn’t know what to say; with tears in her eyes, she looked at everyone for a long while and only said, "To still be able to see you all, I’m so fortunate..."
Her brief words once again brought tears to Amelia’s and Snow Fitch’s eyes.
"Alright, you should rest now. We’ll step out and not disturb you anymore."
Shaw nodded, "Mr. Hart is here, so you should keep her company. I’m fine; you don’t need to worry."
Amelia muttered, "What’s so good about keeping him company..."
Shaw gave a faint smile without exposing her thoughts.
As the group turned to leave, Christopher stared anxiously at the woman he loved, worried that she was still upset about him hiding the fact that his sight had returned, and his heart was slightly tense.
After closing the door of the hospital room, Amelia turned to Benny Palmer and the others, "Where are you staying? When are you planning to go back? I have to cooperate with the airline’s follow-up investigation on this side, so I probably can’t leave for now. And Shaw just had surgery; she isn’t suited for long-distance travel either."
Benny looked at his wheelchair-bound good brother, took a deep breath, and drawled, "We... came here straight from the airport, no time to go to the hotel."
Is that so?
Amelia glanced at someone, no wonder he looked exhausted, with a pale face.
"Since that’s the case, you guys go get some rest first. There’s nothing much happening here at the hospital for the time being."
Christopher saw that she kept talking to Benny, ignoring him, which inevitably made him feel a bit sour, "And what about you? I see your dark circles are almost like a panda’s. Why don’t you also come back to the hotel with us and get some proper rest?"
Snow Fitch immediately took her arm, "Yeah... you haven’t slept well since the incident, how can your body withstand this?"
Indeed, Amelia was both tired and drowsy, her head spinning, just wanting to lie down and sleep soundly.
But Shaw can’t be left alone, she needed to stay by her side.
"You guys go ahead, I’ll just rest in the ward." As it happens, the conditions in this ward are not bad, there’s a big sofa that will do for lying down.
"No way, either you come back to the hotel with us, or I’ll stay here and keep you company," someone said with a domineering and assertive tone, leaving no room for negotiation.
Benny glanced at him, and couldn’t help but snort coldly—a real love-struck fool, already at his wit’s end, but still playing the hero.
Amelia appreciated that he had come from a thousand miles away, through many dangers, but his consistently domineering temperament was also distasteful to her.
But before she could argue, Snow shook her arm and openly stood on his side, "Just listen to him this once. On the way here, he endured by taking painkillers. If you don’t go back to the hotel with him, he could really stay here with you, and if something happens to his body, wouldn’t you worry?"
Christopher didn’t expect Snow to support him, and he shot her a glance of surprise and gratitude.
Amelia looked at the man, and the displeasure that had just risen in her heart quietly ebbed away.
She had wanted to retort—"It’s not like I asked him to come"—but the words just wouldn’t come out, and she could only mumble, "But what about Shaw..."
"I’ll stay. I’m familiar with Shaw too, you should be at ease, right?"
"You..." Amelia looked at her best friend, feeling that her betrayal was perhaps a little too swift?
"Stop babbling and hurry to the hotel, I’m going in," Snow pushed her a few steps forward, toward Christopher, then turned and entered the ward.
Since that was the case...
She had to go back to the hotel.
After the others stood idly for a while, the atmosphere suddenly became ambiguous and awkward.
Amelia swallowed, lifted her hand in a vague gesture, "Well... let’s leave someone else here, just in case something happens, it will be convenient to run errands."
Benny immediately pointed to a bodyguard next to him, "You, stay behind, and take orders from Miss Fitch."
"Yes," the bodyguard responded and walked toward the ward.
Christopher looked at her, "Is there anything else you’re worried about?"
She licked her lips nervously, her voice getting lower and lower, "No... nothing."
Benny moved out of the way behind the wheelchair, consciously making space for Amelia, thinking this would please him.
No sooner had he moved aside than the occupant of the wheelchair grumbled discontentedly, "What are you doing?"
