Chapter 24: Chapter 24 A fierce knee to his lower abdomen

"Baby Hope, it’s time to take our medicine." Amelia Garcia acted as if she hadn’t heard and leaned in close, gently coaxing.

Strangely enough, the little girl who usually resisted medicine surprisingly complied this time, even though she dodged a few times when taking the herbal medicine, the process went smoothly overall.

Christopher Hart noticed her proficiency in caring for the child, as if she truly were an experienced mother, which caused a slight frown to form on his forehead and suspicions to rise again in his heart.

"Have you rehearsed this scene numerous times in your mind?" Taking the bowl and spoon from her, the man probed once more.

Amelia, already adept at responding, tenderly wiped Hope’s mouth with a tissue as she spoke indifferently, "Haven’t you heard that women are born with maternal instincts? Besides, it’s your daughter being sweet, not me being skilled."

The man snorted and was about to say something when his phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, furrowed his brows, and raised his hand to hang up.

But soon enough, the call came in again.

He reluctantly turned away to answer the call, "What’s up?"

"Christopher..." Lily Garcia’s contrived, soft tone came through the phone, her concern audible, "How’s Hope? Do you need me to come over to take care of her? You didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night, right? You can’t keep staying up late like this."

"We’ve been discharged and are back home, someone’s taking care of her."

"Discharged already?" Surprise was evident from the other end, "Is Hope all better then?"

"Mhm, more or less."

His tone was already quite cold, but Lily didn’t mind and continued, "It’s just after eight, not too late. I’ll come over to see Hope."

"No need, she’s already asleep."

"Then... I want to see you, I miss you, Christopher... these past few days, you’ve been neglecting me," Lily started to sound plaintive, her tone becoming whiny.

Christopher’s patience hit a red light, his tone even colder, "Do you really have to entangle me with this while Hope is sick?"

"I..."

"Since you called, there’s something I need to ask you." The man suddenly cut her off, recalling something important.

Lily hurriedly inquired with feigned annoyance, "What is it?"

"Online smear campaign against that designer—was it you who ordered those social media accounts to post it?"

"..." There was sudden silence on the other end of the phone.

"Lily, do not use your favors with the Hart Family to act recklessly." Christopher’s warning left no room for courtesy; he didn’t view her at all as someone who had done favors for the Hart Family.

Upon hearing this, Lily’s mind exploded with heartache, grief, and rage all surging to her heart.

"Christopher, I was just telling the truth, what’s wrong with that? Are you warning me because of that unrelated woman? You said you knew who’s who, but it seems your heart has already sided with that woman!"

Lily, who was cooing a second ago, now suddenly sprang up like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

"I don’t want to argue with you. I will have someone deal with this matter. You should not come looking for me for a while, take some time to reflect on yourself."

"Christopher, you..."

The man had no desire to say a word in his defense, coldly dropping a few punitive words and dismissing her pleas, briskly cutting off the call.

Putting away his phone and turning around, he found Amelia standing behind him at some point.

Their eyes met and she raised her hand to point, "Well... Hope woke up after her medicine and said she was hungry, I was thinking of going downstairs to find something to eat."

Christopher said, "I’ll have the kitchen send something up."

"Oh, okay..." Amelia turned back around, ready to head back into the room, but then seemingly recalling something, turned back and said, "Mr. Hart, I have no intention of becoming an obstacle between you and Miss Garcia, I hope you can make things clear and prevent any misunderstandings by Miss Garcia."

The man watched her.

The corridor’s ceiling lights were bright, but his nose was so prominent that a small shadow fell on one side of his handsome face, making it appear even more charming and alluring.

"She’s misunderstood, and it’s too late to explain. What should I do?"

A deep voice came through, causing Amelia Garcia’s brows to suddenly furrow.

What did he mean?

Judging by his expression, he seemed to not care about the misunderstanding at all. In fact, he appeared to be enjoying it.

Her heartbeat inexplicably quickened, and with a cold face, Amelia said harshly, "Since that’s the case, I can only leave immediately."

She attempted to pass by him, but just as she was brushing past the man, her wrist was seized by a forceful, warm grip.

Amelia reacted as if electrified, reflexively raising her hand to shake his off, only to twist her body and collide with the wall, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at him.

Christopher Hart turned around and saw her reaction, which he found extremely amusing. His smile grew broader as he leisurely took a step forward.

She immediately became tenser, pressing her shoulders back against the wall.

"Mr. Hart, what are you trying to imply?"

"Miss Norton, that startled little rabbit look of yours is exactly like my deceased wife’s."

...

Amelia cursed fiercely in her heart.

This bastard! He constantly probes every chance he gets!

"How about it, Miss Norton? Name your price... how much money will it take for you to stay?"

Christopher instinctively knew he was right, although he couldn’t find conclusive evidence at the moment. This woman had to be Amelia Garcia, who had supposedly bled to death after childbirth four years ago!

She had returned, obviously for her daughter.

But why wouldn’t she admit her identity? Why fake her death years ago? Why abandon her daughter?

His mind was filled with too many unanswered questions, so he wanted to keep her here—there would be plenty of time to dissect her motives slowly.

Hearing this, Amelia’s bright eyes widened even further, and a rush of intense indignation, fueled by humiliation, flooded the beautiful depths of her gaze!

"Mr. Hart, I’ve encountered shameless people, but never anyone as shameless as you!"

Furious, she spoke without restraint, "With eyes for the pot while eating from your bowl, aren’t you afraid of choking?"

"You might be misunderstanding, Miss Norton. I’m asking you to stay as my daughter’s mother, not to be my woman—of course, if you wish to climb into my bed, I won’t refuse."

"After all, Miss Norton, you are young and talented, beautiful and intelligent, and you still bear the shadow of my former wife..." He spoke slowly and deliberately while lifting her black, soft hair, twining and playing with it between his fingers.

Amelia’s eyes widened again as she watched his mocking gaze, and suddenly, with a clench of her teeth, she swiftly brought her knee up and drove it hard into his abdomen!

"Ugh—"

A muffled groan escaped the man as his handsome features contorted together, and he stumbled backward, looking utterly disheveled.

"Mr. Hart, there’s a price to pay for flirting indiscriminately. Don’t think every woman will fall for your games!"

Amelia was beyond furious.

How had she never noticed before that Christopher Hart was such a lasciviously insincere man? What happened to the clean, bright, and nobly charming sunny boy from before?

After dropping those words, she turned to leave, but the man, enduring the pain, suddenly straightened up and yanked her back again, slamming her hard against the wall.

"Aren’t you finished!" The woman was completely enraged.

Christopher’s face flushed red, his body seething with anger.

His strong hands pinned her shoulders; his eyes narrowed slightly, deep and unfathomable, and his cold, handsome face suddenly moved close, his thin lips almost touching hers.

Amelia was petrified, daring not to move an inch.
