Chapter 746: Chapter 534 “The Weeping Psychotic Madman”_1 Chapter 746: Chapter 534 “The Weeping Psychotic Madman”_1 “Huff huff huff~”
The scorching fireball was at the forefront, providing Colin, who was fully armed, with a distant “view.”
However, the staircase leading to the next level, while feeling a bit more sinister than usual, had no other abnormalities.
Colin and his comrades made their way upwards, reaching the third floor, only to find another mirror-like staircase descending.
He examined it with the light of the flame and noticed that from this corner down, patches resembling black moss started to appear sporadically around the area.
“Going down from here, back to the first floor, we’ll be on the second level of the hospital…” the voice of Orange Cat came from behind.
Colin nodded, sensing no issues, and continued forward.
At that moment, Ashen Holy Body glanced at the patches and said, “It’s best not to touch these things directly, they have a very strong corrosive effect on flesh and blood, touching them with bare skin is almost like touching strong acid…”
“Can they really do that?” Orange Cat exclaimed in surprise.
They had bypassed these during their last visit without taking notice…
“Yes.” Ashen Holy Body added, “We’ve tested them. However, they only react to living flesh; corpses or anything that has been dead for a while and completely expired show no response to them…”
“Would clearing them trigger something?” Colin casually asked.
“There won’t be a problem, you can’t destroy these. If you don’t believe me, Brother Shunzi, you can try,” Ashen Holy Body stated.
“Can’t destroy them?”
Upon hearing this, Colin snapped his fingers and a flame flew out, landing on one of the black patches on the wall, igniting it instantly.
“This seems easily…eh?”
Colin was about to speak, but his expression suddenly darkened.
It hadn’t burned away?
After the flame vanished, the black patch reappeared in the original area.
With no change from before it was burned…
Undeterred, he tried several more times, yet the result was the same.
Even after burning the wall with it, within seconds, it too would return to its original state.
“There’s something to this, an anomaly that even the ‘Bonfire’ can’t burn away.”
This was Colin’s first encounter with such a phenomenon.
Nevertheless, after confirming that there would be no issue as long as one didn’t directly touch the black patches with their skin, Colin led his team downwards.
Descending the mirror-like staircase from the third floor, they safely made their way back to the lobby on the first floor.
To be precise, it was the lobby on the first floor of the hospital’s second level!
“I originally thought each ‘floor’ referred to a level of the building, but now it seems that’s not the case. Every time we pass through one, we reach a more ‘inner’ layer of the world, with a ‘nonexistent hospital’ on each level…”
Feeling the changes around him, Colin came to this realization.
At this moment, besides the dark patches, the scene in front of him looked almost identical to the first level.
Even the female employee at the front desk was still there.
Different from before, when she needed his gaze to fall on her to sense him and then turned her head, this time she was already looking over without needing to be seen…
Colin didn’t avoid her, but met her gaze directly.
He saw, on the professionally smiling face, a pair of eyes that became increasingly hideous as they locked eyes.
“Hello, do you need help? Hello, do you need help?!”
“Hello? Hello?…”
“You you you…”
The soft and polite female voice suddenly became rougher and shriller, as grating as nails on a chalkboard, causing a chill to run down one’s spine.
Colin felt a strong sensation of falling.
He didn’t panic; fire swirled in his eyes, pulling him out of the bizarre sensation and the momentary ‘distraction’ caused by the eye contact.
The voice by his ear vanished instantly, returning to its original gentle tone: “Hello, may I help you with anything?”
Colin paid her no more heed. With the fire burning on his body, he thoroughly severed that link, “Stay alert, make sure you are mentally stable. Don’t make eye contact with these things, otherwise you might run into some unexpected trouble.”
Big guy, we’ve always been cautious, okay? We wouldn’t dare to look around like you… The two of them silently muttered in their hearts, yet nodded.
Seeing this, Colin’s gaze moved beyond the female employee, who seemed to have become part of the anomalies, and looked at the LED screen behind her.
Upon reaching the second level, there had been some changes to the guidelines on the screen.
For example, the first one “There are only three floors in the outpatient department of this hospital…” disappeared, replaced with “1. This institute has been thoroughly disinfected; there are no unclean things. If you find anything dirty, please do not touch it. If the situation is dire, please call out loudly for our nurses to handle it…”
“Is this referring to those black patches?”
Colin pondered thoughtfully. Based on the information observed so far, whoever inputted this data onto the LED screen seemed to be on the friendly side.
But who might that be?
The mission hadn’t specified, and there weren’t many directions Colin could guess from.
He took a breath and then looked at the other two items, noting that the third one still contained “gibberish,” though it had changed slightly.
It was mostly nonsense; except for a few rare and complex characters disappearing and the addition of the character “help,” the rest was unintelligible.
“I won’t guess about the stuff on there anymore.” Colin pursed his lips, and without further inquiry, asked, “Where do we go next?”
“It’s still the staircase. The first few layers are accessed through staircases. After every three layers, some changes will appear. But starting from the second layer, the range of that special staircase expands. Any building could potentially have it, making it a bit hard to find…” Ashen Holy Body explained.
