Surprise showed on Colin’s face, but after a moment of thought, it didn’t seem too strange, so he continued to ask:
“Where is the distress signal coming from? Can you hear the specifics?”
“It might contain the meaning of ‘help’ and seems to be mechanically sent on repeat, not by a living person. Beyond that, the rest is unknown, as the signal is very weak when it reaches here. The location, it seems, is just ahead…”
“Ahead, then that must be where the target is.”
Colin pondered. He was a bit curious about what could be emitting this signal…
It could be humans, or an anomaly, or perhaps one of the xenomorphic races.
Anyway, the possibilities were numerous…
But no matter which it was, he now had to be careful not to capsize in the gutter all at once.
With this in mind, Colin slowed down a bit to prepare for any sudden situations, but he didn’t reduce the range of the flame’s illumination. On the contrary, he expanded it further…
Even though this increased the likelihood of being discovered by something bizarre.
But it also increased the likelihood of detecting anomalies.
Then, after several more boring but cautious hours, Colin, shooting forward like a comet, suddenly saw the space ahead open up into a vast and immense void of darkness.
Then he squinted, his pupils contracting, and looked ahead through the diffused light of the flame, his breath catching slightly.
A celestial object of immense size occupied most of the view ahead and conveyed an intangible oppressive force to Colin, who gazed directly at it.
After steadying his emotions, Colin focused his attention and surveyed the celestial body before him.
It drifted at the center of the open space, and further around it, one could vaguely make out strange asteroid belts…
Overall, it looked quite like a moonscape archetype.
The encircled celestial body was shrouded in a dark mist, looking as if it were covered in black mold from afar.
An indescribably eerie aura slowly emanated from it…
“From this angle, it looks a bit like the Earth viewed from the Moon on TV, though the distance isn’t quite that far…”
Colin opened his mouth to mutter silently.
Then he collected his thoughts, his gaze moving to several gigantic man-made objects around the perimeter of the spheroid misty celestial body—
Three massive and severely damaged rings.
Their presence made the sphere resemble a special kind of gyroscope.
And it was at that moment that the Little Maid reappeared, bringing a line of translated text onto Colin’s retina.
“Mr. Colin, I have received a recognizable signal frequency. After translation, it’s confirmed to be a distress message, roughly meaning: ‘Alert… Star… calling’ severe damage, urgently requesting assistance…”
“Recognizable… message?”
Upon hearing this, Colin immediately realized that the object on the celestial body was likely related to Bonfire Company.
Otherwise, decoding alone would not know how long it would take…
However, for some reason, a spiritual instinct made Colin feel that the information given by the Little Maid might not be quite right.
“Can you send me the original content of the signal to take a look?”
Colin inquired, and after receiving an affirmative nod from the Little Maid, he quickly obtained the signals.
Then…
He discovered that they seemed to be some sort of coded language, completely incomprehensible, but after just two or three seconds, Colin suddenly grasped another layer of information.
This information, compared to what the Little Maid provided, was completely contradictory…
“Do not approach, do not approach, do not…”
“Anyone who enters… will be trapped…”
“All things approaching this place…”
“…please be careful…”
“…”
Because the signals were incomplete, the obtained information was not entirely clear, but it was evident that the content differed significantly from a so-called “distress” message.
It was then that a flash of insight struck Colin’s mind, realizing the reason for this discrepancy.
‘It requires a true human interpretation to obtain the real message, while other life forms only receive a false message…’
‘So this means, that distress signal is like fishing bait? If Different Races heard it, knowing a company force is calling for help, they would likely move in to kick it and then… there would be no after…’
After deciphering the message, Colin found it a bit amusing.
It was consistent with the style of the previous generation of Bonfire Company employees, who were generally harsh and had the kind of character to bite back even while on the brink of death or leave a trap.
It’s very likely a trap that was laid when this place fell… one of them, at least.
Their treatment of all non-human entities and heretics was really without mercy.
“But, my mission this time is to come here. If I don’t approach, then wouldn’t my trip be in vain?”
Colin murmured to himself.
Then his gaze returned to that thing shrouded in black mist, which had been referred to as something Alert, something Star, something number, and started to wonder what had occurred here.
The true signal indicated that entering would surely result in entrapment.
But it didn’t mention why one would get trapped…
“Is it this black mist? Next, shall I enter the moldy celestial body to investigate?”
Colin paused briefly, and without too much hesitation, continued moving forward.
At this moment, he became even more cautious, referencing the full name of Bonfire Company each time he moved a distance, to ensure the connection didn’t break.
‘If the signal is lost here, it’s going to be big trouble.’
As thoughts flashed through his mind, Colin drew ever closer to the gyroscope-like celestial body with the three rings, at its moldy heart…
