Chapter 304: Chapter 302: Firebearer’s Contingency (Extra chapter for monthly votes)._1 Chapter 304: Chapter 302: Firebearer’s Contingency (Extra chapter for monthly votes)._1 Colin didn’t delay; he secretly consumed a “Colorless Crystal” and, standing more than ten meters away, reached out shakily to point at the bonfire.

“What are you doing to the Holy Fire!” A patrolling “Sea Siren” exclaimed in shock, hastily raising a magic wand in her hand that was embedded with a round gemstone, with ice cones beginning to condense in the air.

However, before she could act, a huge spherical fireball with a diameter exceeding five meters rose from the bonfire.

From the orange-red and bright light cast by the fireball, there emanated a warmth they had never experienced before, but which was exceptionally comforting. Under this light, even the faint whispers from the deep sea that occasionally reached their ears slowly dissipated.

She felt as if her humanity had been stabilized.

“So… comfortable.”

The patrolling “Sea Siren” squinted her eyes, basking in the warmth radiated from the firelight.

Although she still harbored considerable malice towards Colin and those “non-human” beings, it was true…

The flame was indeed very comfortable.

More of the startled mermaids who had fled earlier now quietly popped their heads out from the water, basking in the flame and couldn’t help but squint their eyes in comfort—

Although mentally they still greatly rejected Colin and the other outsiders, their bodies honestly climbed onto the shore and opened up their postures widely.

Bang.

It was unclear who started it, but one by one, the fishmen all lay back down again, positioning themselves comfortably like lumps of mud, with lazy and satisfied expressions on their faces.

Meanwhile, Dog Brother, the arsonist and others noticed that the task list was rapidly growing.

“Believer” +10.

“Believer” +10.

“How can you, how are you able to guide the Holy Fire?”

The patrolling “Sea Siren” suppressed the comfort spreading throughout her body, struggling not to moan, as she tried to get an answer from Colin.

The “Holy Fire” was not subject to any abnormal manipulation. It could be destroyed but would not be controlled, not even by godlike beings. That was their basic understanding.

Yet, the man before her had shattered this age-old belief!

Colin didn’t answer her but, with a certain doubt, walked towards it.

He also noticed that the “Holy Fire” the mermaids mentioned seemed off, not like a normal flame…

And seeing this, the patrolling “Sea Siren,” though her reason told her she should stop him, some instinct made her halt in her tracks.

Soon, when he reached the bonfire and saw the irregular crystals beneath, there was also a clay pot containing something like grease, which when burning, faintly emitted a sensation similar to that of the power of a Firebearer.

This power was merging into the surrounding flames.

“No way…”

Colin sniffed and immediately understood—the flame originated from a Firebearer!

It was no wonder he had felt that the flame was easier to control than he had expected, almost like the fire at Bonfire Sacrificial Ground of the “World Code-13.”

However…

His eyes fixed on the grease in the clay pot within the bonfire…

“Damn, don’t tell me some Firebearer got caught by the ‘Sea Siren’ and is now hung up as a human torch?

Colin suddenly had some not-so-good associations about his own situation.

Swallowing, he stealthily glanced around and noticed that all the mermaids were lying on the ground, accepting the roasting. So, while maintaining the five-meter-diameter fireball in the sky, he surreptitiously took out the “Analytical Chip” to make a final determination.

He had retrieved the lens from the arsonist before he left.

[A can of grease extracted from various marine creature’s bodies. However, after a sniff, you’ve picked up on a distinct scent that doesn’t seem like fish, but rather like fat from a person.]

[You’re not sure, so you sniff again, and ultimately you’re fairly certain it matches what you were suspecting…]

“Shit, it really is the Firebearer’s grease!”

Colin felt a shock surge through him, suddenly remembering that Tina mentioned the queen seemed to have some business to go back for—could it be that she was going to shake down people and then come to capture him to make oil?

‘Hiss, the Firebearers I’ve encountered are incredibly dominant; even if I possess a variety of powerful items, I can almost be sure they are not my match. If a real Firebearer actually fell into these Fishmen’s hands, though I don’t know by what means, I definitely couldn’t deal with it.’

‘After all, if this company’s trump cards can’t win against them, a Reservist like me stands no chance at all!’

With his heart palpitations, a rush of thoughts crossed his mind at breakneck speed, and Colin couldn’t help but think about running away.

But soon, he realized there was a flaw in his logic.

If the queen truly wanted to shake people down, there was absolutely no need for her to go back, because as the highest combatant, she should stay here watching him to prevent him from escaping or any other accidents.

Someone else could handle the shaking down, or it could be done by communication.

“The situation shouldn’t be too bad, so there’s no need to panic. Even if it was, panicking wouldn’t help. Right now, there’s no escape; the only option is to complete the task and leave this world.”

“But now that I think about it… why do all these Firebearers end up in such tragic states?”

So far, none of the Firebearers he’d seen had met a good end.

Either they turn themselves into kindling, or someone else does.

This made Colin, who had already merged with part of their essence, feel as if he’d been coaxed by Lady Bunny onto a doomed pirate ship.

But…on second thought, if he hadn’t boarded this pirate ship,

He would most likely already be dead from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), without even a chance…

“Sigh, is this what they call a blessing in disguise?”

Colin sighed, preparing to put away the mirror in his hand, finish the task at hand as quickly as possible, and then leave this place—

As for that Firebearer who might be currently used to make oil, whatever their situation may be and whether he could save them or not, it really wasn’t out of modesty, but these matters were better left to someone more capable from the company.

Given past experiences, the fact that he’d seen this meant the company was likely aware of the situation here as well.

So, if there was a similar mission above, Colin hoped they would send the “Corps,” not C Level or lower employees like him—poor, helpless, and weak at the bottom of the corporate hierarchy.

However, it was just then, Colin’s hand, which was pulling back the mirror, uncontrollably stiffened.

Immediately after, he saw a line of text emerge uncontrollably on the mirror—

[In the faint light of the burning grease, you seem to hear a whispering murmur: ‘Your appearance means that my mission in this ‘World Code’ has failed. However, successor, I’ve left a trick up my sleeve; here you may find what you wish to know.’]

“Hiss!”

Colin’s pupils shrunk when he saw these words, feeling the item he’d bought for several hundred points was so hot he wanted to throw it away. But before he could do so, the content on the mirror faded away.

Everything seemed like an illusion.

But he knew for sure—it was no illusion!
