Chapter 176: Chapter 176 Rejoining “Bonfire Company”_1 Chapter 176: Chapter 176 Rejoining “Bonfire Company”_1 “I actually forgot about this!”
Colin’s scalp tingled when he heard the voice near his ear. He wasn’t entirely unfamiliar with this thing, after all, if it weren’t for “Luck” at the start, by now the grass over his grave might have grown three meters tall.
And, listening to the still rolling dice, he suddenly understood the official approach.
“That’s right, the ‘Book of Fate’ doesn’t just observe the short-term future. Besides that, it has the ability to forcibly intervene in the future, causing a person to enter a state of ‘Misfortune,’ or ‘Luck.'”
“The exact mechanism behind ‘Luck’ is unclear, but its execution seems similar to amplifying the probability of certain events. If they can amplify the probabilities, then they really could force someone into the company, especially since Bonfire Company’s selection process seems mechanical and random…”
“Tsk, what I didn’t think of is that the ‘Dice of Fate’ can actually be controlled. However, according to Lady Bunny, the officials currently have the ‘Book of Fate,’ so using this power is indeed not surprising…”
Colin, piecing together his past experiences, even guessed that one of the trio of official approaches, “Fate Propeller,” was likely developed through the ‘Book of Fate.”
“No wonder that Luo something or other was able to use thirteen ‘Book of Fate: Fragment’ at once. They are not expensive, but they are not easy to collect. I found it odd how he managed to buy so many at once and use them all at once. Turns out they are his own stuff…”
Colin complained inwardly and decided not to mention the investigation of the ‘Book of Fate’ for now; however, he must take good advantage of the ‘Book of Fate: Fragment.’
At this moment, the sound of the dice by his ear gradually stopped, and he couldn’t hear the result, but there were some gasps of surprise in the crowd.
Colin, seeming to have an inkling, looked down at his knee and spotted a white envelope that wasn’t there before.
He picked it up and looked at it. Yep, it was identical to the one he had seen earlier.
The unopened envelope bore the bold black words “Bonfire Camp Special Item Containment Company.” If there were no surprises, the contents would likely be more or less the same as before.
“You actually got it?” Qin Chuan, sitting next to him, stared incredulously at Colin.
“Is there something strange about that?” Colin responded subconsciously.
“Not really. It’s just that compared to the others, you might not be miserable enough…”
You’re ranking misfortunes now? Do I have to saw off a leg before you think I’m qualified? Colin pursed his lips and shook the envelope in front of his eyes, “What should I do next, open the envelope?”
As he spoke, he glanced around and noticed that not many people had received an envelope. Out of a thousand people, less than ten…
“Wait a moment…”
Qin Chuan put his hand to his ear, seemingly talking to someone through an earpiece, and after a while, he finally said, “Wait before opening it, let’s change location.”
Saying this, he stood up and pushed Colin away from the scene. Along with them were a few other “old, weak, sick, and disabled” individuals—only eight in total.
Colin also noticed that these people shared one characteristic: they were disabled, but not fully incapacitated—able to move, but not too much.
“By the way, did you hear that dice sound just now?” On the way, Colin casually asked with curiosity.
“That’s the ability of the person in charge.” When mentioning that person, Qin Chuan couldn’t help but speak with respect in his voice.
Colin took the opportunity to ask, “Is that person very powerful?”
“Powerful? Definitely powerful. That’s one of the few Ninth Level Powerhouses that you can’t find in the whole country, no, the whole world. You can’t just simply describe them as powerful…”
Being able to actively roll the ‘Dice of Fate,’ a Ninth Level Powerhouse was indeed terrifying…
Colin smacked his lips in awe, then said, “So out of more than a thousand people, there are only this few of us?”
“It’s still not certain. We’ll only know by this time tomorrow. But there likely won’t be many more.”
“Is it still a 24-hour influence? I’m afraid the specific number won’t be known until tomorrow…”
Colin pondered, wondering how many people would become new employees of the company in the next few days.
Moreover, he was now somewhat curious whether this “Luck” was applied to them to make them “lucky” enough, or if it was some sort of targeting, such as merely increasing their chances of encountering the “Bonfire Company” and not including anything else.
If it was the former, then Colin felt that he should find an opportunity to start “synthesizing”, there might be a chance to synthesize an orange Talent.
But if it was the latter, then that wouldn’t do…
“The problem with the ‘Dice of Fate’ is that even when blessed with good fortune, one cannot feel it.”
Colin sighed inwardly.
A minute or two later, he was wheeled through various corridors, finally entering a room that was clearly arranged for a purpose.
“Just do as the people inside request, and I’ll come to get you after it’s handled,” Qin Chuan said in a soft voice, then left the room.
Colin gave the room a quick look; it was arranged like a reception hall, with a woman dressed in a military uniform sitting in the middle. Her face bore a dignified smile that at first glance seemed innocuous, but a split second later, one could feel an inexplicable discomfort.
After a moment’s thought, Colin was reminded of the smiles found on the statues in temples and shrines.
Such smiles were somewhat acceptable on statues, but seeing them on a human made it rather unsettling.
‘Is this… ‘Divine Strike’?’
Colin speculated, observing the woman’s status, he could faintly sense a hint of pain and struggle beneath that stiff smile.
However, he didn’t dare to stare for long, because she also imparted an indescribable sense of threat.
She must be at least Eighth Level if not Ninth…
“When one climbs to high positions through official means, the negative side effects seem quite significant, creating a semblance of neither human nor ghost.”
Colin recalled the person he saw earlier with his back full of fine wires, and looking at the woman before him, he felt they both seemed to be in great pain, as if their spirits were always tensely stretched.
“Alright, you may now tear open the envelope,” the woman said, her tone carrying an indescribable ethereal quality.
Whoosh…
Without dawdling, Colin promptly tore open the envelope and poured out the letter inside—
It was the familiar script, the familiar countdown, the familiar request to press a fingerprint.
Under the woman’s instruction, Colin didn’t wait for the last few seconds this time and directly pressed down his thumb.
Unlike the last time, upon pressing the thumbprint, he wasn’t transported immediately but instead, a message popped up.
[The official mission initiation is about to begin; your Trial Task is “to investigate the large abandoned sewer under the Black Forest Subway Station, third level.”]
[Bonfire Company (Full name: Bonfire Camp Special Item Containment Company) wishes you all the best on this incident!]
