Chapter 31: Chapter 28: Strong Side Effects
"What?" Xiao Jingshan raised his voice a bit.
Fu Jichen knew he had heard clearly, so he didn’t elaborate.
On the other side, Xiao Jingshan was so shocked that he nearly walked into the restaurant’s glass door, not paying attention to the path ahead.
He pushed the door open with one hand and slowed his pace: "That explains it, medication reactions. Emergency contraceptives have a stimulating effect on the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. Last time when I gave her an IV, I mentioned that she has a high sensitivity to many drugs, with side effects much larger than for the average person."
Fu Jichen: "Is it serious?"
"Based on the symptoms you described, it’s relatively serious."
Xiao Jingshan wasn’t trying to scare him; under normal circumstances, there wouldn’t be side effects, even if there are, they are usually mild nausea that doesn’t require treatment and would disappear shortly after.
On the phone, Fu Jichen stayed silent for too long, and Xiao Jingshan, not knowing his situation, reminded him kindly, with a doctor’s compassion: "For someone with a constitution like hers, it’s best to use traditional contraceptive methods, like condoms. Emergency contraceptives are highly damaging because they elevate progesterone and estrogen in a short period of time..."
Before he could finish, Fu Jichen hung up the phone and pushed the door into the examination room.
The doctor’s diagnosis matched Xiao Jingshan’s words, and currently, there was no good way to alleviate it other than medication or, failing that, gastric lavage, which would be even more uncomfortable.
After receiving two bottles of IV at the hospital, Shen Jianian felt much better, and fell asleep lying on the hospital bed.
During this time, Fu Jichen went out to take a work call, and when he returned, he sat on the chair beside the bed, looked at the sleeping person, and raised his hand to brush the hair off her forehead, revealing a completely pale face, so small that it was only the size of his palm, her brow still furrowed even in sleep.
His fingertip gently touched her brow, smoothing out the slight crease.
Thinking about it now, there was no need to be angry with her. In her early twenties, with parents dead, relatives cold and harsh, falling from heaven to hell just like that, the last bit of pride was shattered by him last night.
Fu Jichen sighed, somewhat regretting his behavior towards her in the morning.

Shen Jianian woke up in a guest room at Rose Manor.
She felt as if she had slept for a long time, with her last memory in a hospital room, where a nurse came in to insert a needle into the back of her hand. She had no recollection of when the IV was finished or when she returned.
"You’re awake?" Zhou Rongzhen’s soft and gentle voice came from the side, "Are you still feeling unwell?"
Shen Jianian didn’t speak, just shook her head.
Zhou Rongzhen breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "Would you like to eat something?"
Shen Jianian sat up, turned her head towards the window side, and pursed her lips: "Congee."
"Great, there’s some simmering slowly in the kitchen, I’ll go get you a bowl."
Zhou Rongzhen was meticulous and considerate, and before going downstairs, she took a slightly larger pillow from the sofa and placed it behind Shen Jianian’s back, making her much more comfortable leaning back.
"Thank you." Shen Jianian turned her head back, her voice was light, a little hoarse.
Zhou Rongzhen gave her an affectionate look, feeling uneasy. After knowing what had happened when Shen Jianian returned from the hospital, she felt guilty, thinking repeatedly while Shen Jianian was in a deep sleep whether it was her request for help in delivering sobering soup to her husband last night that led to this.
Zhou Rongzhen sighed quietly, left the room, and went downstairs.
She ran into Fu Jichen in the living room, adjusted her expression, and gave a smile.
Since bringing Shen back, Fu Jichen hadn’t gone out, staying at home handling business. He had just emerged from the study when he asked, "Awake?"
"Yes. I was going to get her something to eat." Zhou Rongzhen looked at him, hesitated for a moment, and cautiously said, "Sir, please don’t blame me for speaking out of turn. The medication has serious side effects, Miss Shen is young, and she should take care of her health."
Fu Jichen didn’t respond for a while, leaving Zhou Rongzhen feeling anxious. Nodding to him, she quickly headed to the kitchen, fearing her words might have offended him, leading to her dismissal.
Those words should have been swallowed, as she, just a servant, had no place speaking on her employer’s personal matters. Yet as a woman herself, witnessing such a beautiful young woman suffering so severely from medication, she couldn’t hold back anymore.
Zhou Rongzhen ladled a bowl of congee and prepared some light and refreshing side dishes. On exiting the kitchen, she didn’t see Fu Jichen and exhaled softly, wondering if he’d taken her words to heart.
From seeing how concerned he was about Shen Jianian in the morning, he didn’t seem to treat her lightly, so perhaps he would be careful in the future.
Zhou Rongzhen returned to Shen Jianian’s room, still in the same position, leaning against the headboard, her form frail and slender, her head bowed in thought, with a faint aura of melancholy enfolding her, evoking pity.
"Miss Shen." Zhou Rongzhen called to her.
Shen Jianian snapped back to reality, moved her stiff body, and looked up at her: "Just call me Jianian."
Zhou Rongzhen smiled and followed her lead: "Jianian." She pushed over a movable solid wood bedside table and placed the tray on it, "Here, eat while it’s hot."
It was three o’clock in the afternoon, and Shen Jianian hadn’t eaten since last night, her stomach empty, and she should have been hungry, yet she had no appetite.
"Oh, when did these two little ones sneak in?"
Zhou Rongzhen suddenly exclaimed, drawing Shen Jianian’s curiosity. She raised her eyes to see a black cat and an orange cat that had sneaked in, jumping onto the sofa and seemingly about to leap onto the bed as Zhou Rongzhen moved to shoo them away.
The presence of these furry intruders brought some comfort to Shen Jianian’s heavy heart, allowing her a slight smile: "No need to stop them, I like them."
Zhou Rongzhen said helplessly: "Coal has a bad temper; just last month, it scratched the sir, who was very annoyed. Seeing them come up to the third floor might make him angry."
The sir had three scratches on his hand at the time, bleeding, and needed a vaccine. He was furious and ordered the cats to be thrown out, never to be allowed in the garden again, to fend for themselves since they couldn’t be tamed.
But the cats kept coming uninvited, and no one could keep them out, so over time, the sir stopped caring.
Thinking of that person made Shen Jianian lose her good mood, the curvature of her lips fading away.
Zhou Rongzhen keenly noticed the change in her expression, paused slightly, guessed the reason, and switched the subject with a smile: "Besides the cats, the garden also has two stray dogs under care, which you haven’t seen. They’re ill at the pet hospital right now but will be back in a few days. You’ll like them too."

The lunch appointment that couldn’t take place was rescheduled to the evening and ended at nine-thirty. Fu Jichen tiredly got into the car.
Once again, accompanying him for the social event was Zhu Yilan, dressed elegantly and appropriately, not losing her feminine charm, her day-long distraction peaking at this moment.
She looked at the man in the rearview mirror, elegant and with outstanding temperament, wondering why an unexpectedly mysterious Shen Jianian could be his woman, but she couldn’t.
He drank too much last night and impulsively took Shen Jianian; if he truly cherished her, he wouldn’t have let her take that kind of medication.
No matter how much prettier Shen Jianian is, it’s merely a façade, knowing nothing about work. If anyone is suited to stand by Fu Jichen, she believes she is more qualified and confident than Shen Jianian. fre ewe bnove l.com
Zhu Yilan tightened her grip on her handbag, feeling unwilling to accept this. She just needed a chance to get closer to him.
If given the chance, she would do better than anyone else.
