Chapter 30 - 27: Drug Reaction

Chapter 30: Chapter 27: Drug Reaction

Zhu Yilan could have waited for Fu Jichen to come out before bringing up the phone call, but she couldn’t control her emotions, so she impulsively came to the third floor to see for herself.

The door wasn’t closed, and she clearly saw the man she cared about gently caressing another woman’s cheek. Even though the surrounding atmosphere between them was not right, it couldn’t erase the fact of their intimacy.

So, the birth control pills she bought, for whom were they intended? It seemed there was no need to think much as the answer was right before her.

Zhu Yilan’s heart felt tightly clenched by an invisible hand.

When Fu Jichen came out, she took a few deep breaths to find her voice before calmly speaking, "Mr. Chen, would you prefer to have the dinner with President Tan scheduled for noon or evening?"

Fu Jichen straightened the metal strap of his wristwatch, glanced down at the time—ten thirty.

"Noon."

"Okay, I’ll inform President Tan’s side immediately."

Their conversation gradually faded away with their footsteps as Shen Jianian moved from the sofa to the bed, pulled the blanket over her head, and, despite the hunger gnawing at her stomach, ignored it and fell asleep with the sound of chirping birds outside the window.

On the way down to the first floor, Fu Jichen stopped Zhou Rongzhen, who was heading to the kitchen: "Prepare breakfast to be sent to her room."

The "her" he referred to, Zhou Rongzhen knew, and nodded, saying, "Right away."

Zhou Rongzhen didn’t bother the house chef and instead personally cooked a bowl of light chicken soup noodles according to Shen Jianian’s taste, bringing it up to the third floor.

The room door wasn’t closed, and Zhou Rongzhen stood outside, gently knocking twice, "Miss Shen, I’m coming in."

The person who had just fallen asleep was awakened, and a sudden wave of nausea surged in her stomach. Without time to respond, she threw off the blanket, ran barefoot to the bathroom, and leaned over the sink to vomit.

Hearing the unusual sound, Zhou Rongzhen didn’t consider much and entered her room directly.

The sound of retching came intermittently from the bathroom, clear and distressingly uncomfortable to hear.

Zhou Rongzhen quickly put down what she was holding and went to check on the situation.

"What’s going on?" Zhou Rongzhen asked, eyebrows furrowed with worry, as she held the unsteady Shen Jianian with one hand and gently rubbed her back with the other, trying to make her slightly more comfortable. "Did you eat something bad?"

The problem was she hadn’t eaten anything in the morning, and it wasn’t possible for something from last night to react now.

Shen Jianian lifted her face, and Zhou Rongzhen could finally see her face, pale and frightening, with sweat streaming from her forehead and temples as if she had just been pulled out of water.

"Where do you feel unwell?" Zhou Rongzhen asked with concern.

Shen Jianian held her belly with her hand, shook her head, and couldn’t quite explain, "Dizzy, nauseous, stomachache... it feels like it’s my stomach, but not exactly."

Normally, Zhou Rongzhen could suggest medication based on experience for minor ailments, but she hadn’t encountered this situation before. Not daring to act rashly, she helped Shen Jianian to lie down on the bed and hurried downstairs to find the man of the house.

Not seeing anyone in the living room, Zhou Rongzhen asked the cleaning maid, "Where is the gentleman?"

"He just left with Secretary Zhu."

Unsure of what to do, Zhou Rongzhen used the household phone to call Fu Jichen. The call was answered after a few rings, "What’s the matter?"

Zhou Rongzhen said, "Miss Shen is feeling unwell—dizzy, vomiting, stomach pain. I saw a lot of sweat on her face; she seems to be in significant pain."

The car had just left Rose Manor when Fu Jichen ended the call and told the driver, "Turn back."

Both Qu Mo and Zhu Yilan were puzzled.

Fu Jichen patiently repeated, "Go back to Rose Manor."

Without further hesitation, Qu Mo turned the steering wheel to reverse direction, heading back the way they came. Soon, they entered through the black wrought-iron gate of Rose Manor, slowly approaching the main building.

The car hadn’t even come to a complete stop when Fu Jichen opened the door and got out.

Zhu Yilan, not understanding the situation, guessed that perhaps some important documents were forgotten and followed him out of the car.

In the anxious wait, Zhou Rongzhen clasped her hands together, pacing back and forth. Hearing the sound of the door opening, she quickly turned her head and was quite surprised to see Fu Jichen had returned.

Her initial intention in calling the gentleman was to have him send a doctor to the house for Shen Jianian or to arrange for her to be taken to the hospital, not expecting him to come back personally.

With Secretary Zhu present, it indicated he had important matters to attend to, leaving Zhou Rongzhen unsure if calling him might have disrupted his affairs.

"Where’s Shen Jianian?" Fu Jichen looked around.

"Still upstairs in her room," Zhou Rongzhen quickly replied, "When I brought up the food, she was in the bathroom, throwing up bitter water."

Fu Jichen’s face remained stern and indifferent, but following behind, Zhu Yilan distinctly detected an emotion called urgency on his face.

She watched as he entered the elevator without hesitation, hesitated for a moment, but ultimately did not follow.

Arriving on the third floor, Fu Jichen emerged from the elevator and went into Shen Jianian’s room.

When he left, she still had a stubborn and icy demeanor, as if he owed her two lifetimes’ worth of debt. Upon seeing her now, she resembled an injured kitten, curled up tightly under the blanket, both hands pressing her stomach, eyes firmly shut, her pale face covered in sweat.

"Shen Jianian."

Fu Jichen tried calling softly, and the somewhat dazed person mumbled instinctively.

It seemed too late to call Xiao Jingshan over, so Fu Jichen took off his suit jacket to wrap around her, then swiftly carried her out with large strides, his tone soft as he coaxed, "Hang in there, I’ll take you to the hospital."

The elevator doors opened, and in the living room, Zhu Yilan, Zhou Rongzhen, and several maids all saw a tall man carrying a slender and petite girl, striding quickly and steadily towards the door.

"Open the door."

The thinly veiled anger in his voice at the entrance startled everyone.

Zhu Yilan was closest to the door. She quickly stepped forward to open it, her expression complex beyond words. He had returned for Shen Jianian and was personally carrying her, his expression tense with worry.

How could this be?

He and Shen Jianian...

Fu Jichen carried her down the steps and into the back seat of the car.

Zhu Yilan followed, standing outside the car window, compelled to carefully remind her boss, "Mr. Chen, you’re scheduled to meet President Tan at noon, and it’s already eleven ten."

From Rose Manor to the reserved restaurant, it would take exactly forty minutes, meaning they needed to leave now.

Fu Jichen lowered the car window, turning his profile towards her, speaking in a casual tone as if it wasn’t something worth worrying about, "Let them know the dinner is postponed to the evening."

Zhu Yilan still wanted to say something, but the window had already rolled up. Through the glass, she heard the cold voice from inside instruct, "To the hospital."

As both a driver and a bodyguard, Qu Mo did not meddle in business affairs, focusing solely on his boss’s travel and safety. Since the instruction was to go to the hospital, he drove them towards Xiao Jingshan’s private hospital.

The car started, and a sudden breeze rustled through the treetops, a few withered leaves gracefully spinning down to the ground as if tears were being shed.

Zhu Yilan stood grasping her phone in the wind for quite a while, watching the gradually distant car turn into a black dot in her view, until it was completely out of sight.

Qu Mo increased the speed, and twenty minutes later, they arrived at the privately funded hospital, backed by Fu Jichen and managed by Xiao Jingshan.

Unfortunately, they came on a day when Xiao Jingshan wasn’t present. After inquiring with his assistant, the news was that two days ago, he had gone to another city to attend an academic symposium for a week and hadn’t returned yet.

When Fu Jichen called, the meeting had just ended. Xiao Jingshan, carrying a black briefcase, was preparing to have lunch at the hotel restaurant.

In the examination room, a doctor was checking on Shen Jianian, while outside in the hallway, Fu Jichen, with a slight frown, described her symptoms over the phone.

Without seeing the patient in person, Xiao Jingshan couldn’t make a judgment, so he asked further, "Did she eat anything?"

Fu Jichen thought briefly and said, "She hasn’t eaten anything else this morning, just took a... contraceptive pill."
