Roman and Julienne's heart desire -
Chapter 18: Take care of our sister
Chapter 18: Take care of our sister
After three days of convalescence, Julie was slowly regaining her strength. She hobbled around the room, using sticks for support, her movements labored but determined. As she sat down quietly in her room, the silence enveloped her like a shroud.
Roman’s absence had been palpable since he’d left without a word. Every morning, noon, and night, Julie would anticipate his arrival, but the hours ticked by, and he’d remain elusive. The only ones present in the house were the guards and the servant assigned to her care.
"Life is so boring," Julie murmured to no one in particular, her voice barely audible as she addressed the wall, which stood mute and unresponsive. She sighed, her gaze wandering around the room, searching for something to break the monotony.
Minutes ticked by, and Julie’s patience wore thin. She decided to take a stroll in the garden, hoping the fresh air would lift her spirits. As she approached the door, it swung open, and Roman walked in, his presence commanding attention.
Julie’s eyes widened like saucers as she gazed at Roman, her eyes reddening as tears welled up. In a flash, she threw herself into his arms, her emotions overflowing. Roman’s expression turned from calm to surprised as he was caught off guard by her sudden display of emotion.
He quickly regained composure and pushed her back, his movements firm but not unkind. Julie’s face contorted in a mix of surprise and hurt as she stumbled backward, her eyes locked on Roman’s.
Julie found herself on the ground with a startled "ouch" as she winced from the force of the push.
But in a surprising turn of events, the one who had pushed her to the ground was now quickly lifting her up and cradling her in his arms, gently placing her on the bed. Roman’s gaze questioned her distress as he looked at her with an unreadable expression.
"I’m sorry," Julie said after a minute, her voice barely above a whisper. Roman’s eyes never left hers.
"No I’m also sorry for pushing you back, but what is chasing you that you bump into me like that? Or are you trying to hug me?" Roman asked in a deep voice, his words direct and piercing. Julie didn’t dare raise her head, her eyes fixed on her palms as she acted shy around him.
"Yes, I was about to head to the garden when you walked in," Julie replied, her voice soft.
"Be careful next time. Don’t go bumping into people like that," Roman said coldly, his smile-less face stern. As he slowly got up, his long, breathtaking legs carried him toward the door. Just before exiting, he turned around.
"The doctor will come to check on you later," Roman said seriously, his words commanding Julie’s nodding agreement. She kept nodding until the door closed behind him before raising her head.
"Hmm, Julie, where did your brain go when you threw yourself at him like that? Are you out of your mind?" Julie muttered to herself, alone in the room. She slowly lay on her back, chiding herself. "Know what to do, Julie. This isn’t someone you can just throw yourself at because you miss him, okay?"
In the evening, the doctor, none other than Harry, arrived. Julie was summoned to the parlor. "Ma’am, sir is calling you in the parlor," the maid said as Julie opened the door.
"Oh, okay," Julie replied, following the maid to the parlor, where she met Harry for the second time. Their eyes met, and Harry smiled politely, like a good doctor would to his patient. Julie returned the smile.
"Julie, right?" Harry asked, and Julie nodded. "Yes," she answered simply.
"So, how are you feeling? Do you still feel weak or dizzy sometimes? And how are your legs? Are they hurting?" Harry asked politely and friendly.
"Yes, nothing hurts, and my body isn’t weak anymore. I don’t feel dizzy like the rest of the days," Julie replied, answering all his questions.
"That’s good to hear. I was surprised when he told me you could walk yourself with the stick," Harry said happily, as if he were a family member being told about a patient’s recovery.
"Excuse me?" Julie said, curiosity piqued. "What do you mean surprised that I’m walking already? Shouldn’t I be walking by now?"
"Yes, because seriously, you’re healing quite quickly. Normally, people don’t recover that fast," Harry explained, gesturing for Julie to stretch her leg for observation. Meanwhile, Roman’s brow furrowed in the background.
"Good, now move it from this direction to the other. Let me see," Harry instructed, and Julie followed obediently.
After the examination, Harry packed up and headed out. "Wait for me here," Roman said as he walked out to Harry, who was standing outside the door.
"You really take care of her well," Harry said, looking at Roman, who was aloof and elegant as ever. "Yeah, what do you expect?" Roman replied.
"This is unexpected," Harry said, humming before adding, "Well, if you keep taking care of her like that, she will indeed recover in a day or less."
"Thanks for today," Roman said, extending his hand for a handshake.
As Harry prepared to leave, he burst into laughter, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "You trying to do huh? Are we making a deal?" he said, chuckling, and got into his car without shaking Roman’s hand.
Turning around to leave, Roman heard Harry’s voice from behind, carried on the gentle breeze. "Take care of your sister well," Harry said, his tone laced with sarcasm.
Before Roman could turn around and respond, Harry quickly fled, leaving Roman to mutter under his breath. "How stupid, your sister my foot." Roman’s expression darkened as he returned to the living room where Julie was quietly waiting for him.
"When you recover, we’re going to register the marriage, and the contract should remain just between me and you. You understand?" Roman said with a serious look, which Julie disliked due to the pressure it put on her.
"Yes, sir," Julie replied, glancing at him briefly, her voice barely above a whisper. Unbeknownst to her, her response made Roman raise an eyebrow. ’Sir? Who is she calling me?’ he wondered, about to address it when he received a phone call and quickly left the living room to take it.
The sound of his voice, low and husky, drifted back into the room, but Julie’s attention was focused on the conversation they’d just had. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she thought about the marriage and the contract.
When Roman returned, Julie was already asleep on the couch, her gentle snores a soothing sound in the quiet room. Roman’s gaze fell upon her, and he grimaced. ’And now is she tired of her room that she’ll sleep in the living room?’ he thought but didn’t walk away.
Instead, he approached Julie and gently scooped her into his arms. As he lifted her, their bodies swayed together, and Roman’s face was inches from hers. The softness of her skin and the gentle rise and fall of her chest against his arms sent a flutter through his chest.
He carefully navigated the hallway and entered her room, closing the door with his legs. The room was dimly lit, the only sound the soft hum of the air conditioner.
Roman gently laid Julie on the bed, and as he did, she instinctively held his neck tightly, pulling him down with her. Roman’s eyes widened in surprise as he found himself caught off guard by her sudden grip.
For a moment, Roman’s face was close to hers, their lips almost touching. The intimacy of the moment was palpable, and Roman’s heart skipped a beat. He slowly pried her fingers loose and stood up, looking down at Julie’s peaceful face.
The moonlight streaming through the window cast a silver glow on Julie’s features, highlighting the gentle curves of her face. Roman’s gaze lingered on her, his expression softening.
As he stood there, Roman felt a sense of responsibility wash over him. He knew he had to take care of Julie, not just because of the contract, but because she was now under his care.
