Chapter 16: Why don’t you want to marry me?
"What is he doing, sitting like that and looking at me like I’m the television, while it’s in the other direction?" Julie thought to herself, her gaze fixed on the intricate patterns of the Persian rug beneath her feet.
But she didn’t dare raise her eyes and look at him, not yet. However, after what he said, she had no choice but to meet his piercing blue gaze.
Julie totally forgot about what made her run away from the mansion at night as she nodded about the topic of contract marriage, her mind reeling with uncertainty. "Okay," she said with a nod, looking at him, ready to hear what he had to say.
Roman, seated across from her in the opulent sitting room, exuded confidence and sophistication. His chiseled features, strong jawline, and perfectly styled dark hair made him impossibly handsome.
The soft glow of the crystal chandelier above highlighted his sharp cheekbones, and his accentuated broad shoulders.
He is like the devil king.
"I want us to get married, a contract marriage," Roman said without batting an eye, as if what he said wasn’t a big deal. Meanwhile, Julie’s mouth dropped, her eyes bulged out, and her ears felt overwhelmed. The cream-colored walls and plush velvet sofa seemed to fade into the background as Julie’s focus narrowed to Roman’s calm, unreadable expression.
Remembering the reason she ran away yesterday, Julie didn’t say anything but closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm herself down. The scent of fresh flowers wafted through the air, but it did little to soothe her frazzled nerves.
"Are you alright?" Roman asked after seeing her close her eyes, thinking something was wrong. "Am I alright?" Julie asked back with a raised brow, and before Roman could say anything, she snapped at him, "How on earth do you expect me to be alright, huh?" Julie’s nose flared with anger, and if she were a dragon, fire could have flared from it, turning Roman to ashes.
"Why are you angry?" Roman asked suddenly, with a raised brow, which made Julie’s lips drop at his question.
’God, what does he mean by why I’m angry? Shouldn’t I be angry? How dare he tell me to have a contract marriage with him? Does he think I’m here to sell my body to him or what? What a cold, heartless person,’ Julie thought, her mind racing with indignation.
Though Julie knew Roman was rich and wealthy, and girls would be more than willing to marry him, she wasn’t like that. She wanted someone who would love her, and she would love him back – a peaceful life she never had in her family, and comfort she wanted to get from the man she would marry.
Then, how on earth would she marry Roman, the man who changed his attitude now and then? Looking at Roman, who was looking at her blankly and waiting for her to give an answer about why she was angry, Julie’s anger skyrocketed.
She forgot that her legs were weak as she abruptly stood up to leave the place without giving an answer. In the next second, she collapsed on the ground, the room spinning around her.
Seeing this, Roman quickly stood up from the plush velvet seat, and like a flash, he was standing in front of her, his piercing blue eyes filled with concern. He was about to lift her up when Julie suddenly pushed him back, and even he, a powerful man, stumbled and fell onto the polished marble floor with a thud.
"What are you doing?" Roman thundered, his deep voice echoing through the elegant sitting room as he looked at her with his backside aching. He winced, "Ouch!" his face grimacing like someone had asked him to eat something foul.
The sight was almost comical, and Julie couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Her giggles filled the room, and Roman’s face turned beet red with annoyance. As he struggled to get up, Julie’s laughter slowly subsided, and she lowered her eyes, a mixture of fear and amusement still dancing in her gaze.
She slowly dragged herself back, away from Roman, whose grim expression suggested she hadn’t done anything good.
’What have you done to yourself, Julie? You actually pushed him and laughed at him? Seriously, you should wait for the results. He won’t throw you out of his house... yet,’ Julie thought to herself, her mind racing with uncertainty.
’But what can I do? It’s seriously funny, the way he fell and winced,’she thought, a small smile still playing on her lips as she recalled the sight. Roman, meanwhile, was looking at her, his eyes fuming, especially when he saw her small smile again.
Without thinking, Roman said, "You will see the results," his voice low and menacing as he got up and strode towards Julie.
Julie, still smiling and lost in her thoughts, had no idea Roman was approaching her. Unexpectedly, she was lifted high into the air, and in another second, she was dropped onto the plush cushion, bouncing slightly due to the impact.
Before she could react, Roman descended upon her, his face inches from hers. Julie’s eyes bulged out in surprise before she burst into laughter again, the absurdity of the situation getting the better of her as Roman tickle her.
The room was filled with the sound of Julie’s laughter, and Roman’s eyes narrowed slightly, his expression still stern, but a hint of amusement danced in his gaze as he look at Julie who was laughing hard over what he is doing to her.
"Please hahaha, stop hahahahahah tickl hahah mee hahaha," Julie laughed uncontrollably, her body shaking with mirth as Roman’s fingers danced across her sensitive spots. Her eyes sparkled with tears, and her face glowed with happiness. Roman suddenly stopped tickling her, but Julie’s laughter lingered, her chest heaving with each breath. f.(r)eewe/bnov\ll.com
Roman, positioned above her, gazed at Julie with an unreadable expression. His eyes crinkled at the corners, and a faint smile played on his lips. Julie’s laughter was infectious, and he found himself smiling, his face inches from hers. As Julie’s laughter finally subsided, their eyes met, and time seemed to stand still.
Julie’s gaze locked onto Roman’s, her pupils dilating slightly. Roman’s eyes, a deep shade of blue, seemed to see right through her. The air was charged with tension as they held each other’s gaze for what felt like an eternity. Julie’s eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly lowered her eyes, breaking the spell.
However, she couldn’t resist looking up at Roman again, her gaze tracing the contours of his face. Roman, taken aback by Julie’s intense stare, felt drawn to her, as if an invisible force was pulling him closer. The room seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the two of them, suspended in this moment.
The soft glow of the crystal chandelier above cast a warm light on their faces, highlighting the emotions that danced across their features. The scent of fresh flowers wafted through the air, adding to the intimacy of the moment. As they gazed at each other, the world outside melted away, leaving only the promise of something more.
As Roman drew himself back, his supporting hand slipped, and he lost his balance. His face landed on Julie’s, and their lips touched. Julie’s lips were slightly parted, and Roman’s upper lip slipped into hers, while her lower lip slipped into his, creating a tender, intimate moment. The softness of their lips melded together, sending a spark of electricity through both of them.
Both Julie’s and Roman’s eyes widened in surprise, their gazes locking in a flash of mutual awareness. Roman’s piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into Julie’s soul, while her black eyes shone with a mix of shock and curiosity.
Roman abruptly got up, leaving Julie frozen in shock on the plush velvet couch, her body sinking slightly into the cushions.
The room fell silent, with only the sound of their ragged breathing breaking the stillness. The crystal chandelier above cast a warm glow over the scene, highlighting the tension between them. The scent of fresh flowers wafted through the air, adding a subtle sweetness to the atmosphere.
"Ho...hmm," Roman breathed deeply, releasing the tension in the air. The awkward silence lingered, and it was clear that one of them needed to speak to break the ice. Roman’s eyes never left Julie’s face, his expression unreadable.
Julie slowly emerged from her shock, feeling like hiding away on the couch. She blinked rapidly, replaying the moment in her head.
’What was I thinking, looking at him like that?’ she thought, shaking her head in regret. But she quickly snapped out of it, trying to compose herself. Her cheeks flushed slightly, and she smoothed her dress, attempting to regain her dignity.
Julie’s inner voice protested, ’ Wait, isn’t it his fault for tickling me? Why should I look guilty?’ She mentally shrugged, trying to shake off the feeling of responsibility. Meanwhile, Roman turned around, his eyes locking onto hers as he said, "We have to talk."
Julie’s thoughts turned skeptical: ’Of course, he thinks we need to talk, but he won’t even apologize.’ As she turned to face him, her eyes narrowed slightly. However, she quickly dropped her gaze, still feeling shy about the intimate moment they shared. ’Okay, I’m listening,’she said, attempting to sit up.
Roman swiftly intervened, his large hands circling around her waist as he lifted her up and gently settled her back onto the couch.
He carefully placed a pillow behind her, ensuring she was comfortable. "Are you comfortable?" he asked, his eyes piercing hers. Julie nodded hastily, avoiding eye contact.
Roman’s gaze lingered on her face, his expression intense. Julie’s inner voice whispered, "Why does he look at people with such pressure?’ She continued nodding until Roman’s voice broke the silence again. "Are you alright?" he asked, his concern evident.
Julie nodded for what felt like an eternity before responding, "Yes, I’m sure." She was taken aback by Roman’s proximity, as he hadn’t returned to his original seat.
Suddenly, he asked, "Look, why don’t you want to marry me?" Julie’s eyes widened, and she drew back, her gaze drifting to his face before quickly looking away. She took a deep breath, trying to process the unexpected question.
