Chapter 999: Chapter 545: The Treasure is Hidden So Secretively!_2
Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings exchanged glances, carefully walking down the corridor.
After turning the corner, they could see another fairly large space ahead.
"Boss, listen, there seems to be some sound."
"Water sounds. There’s an underground river below... Wait, that’s gunfire above!" Sean Knight replied offhandedly, then he quickly realized.
Trouble!
"You stay here, boss; I’ll go up and have a look!" Elijah Hastings dropped his engineer shovel and, with a gun in hand, turned and rushed upward.
"If there are too many of them, lure them in here! You know the situation on this side, use the terrain and kill them!" Sean Knight shouted.
"Boss, I understand!" Elijah Hastings replied, then charged upward.
Sean Knight originally planned to continue downward but thought better of it; he dropped the engineer shovel and followed Elijah Hastings up.
When they reached the uppermost part of the corridor, Sean Knight found that Elijah Hastings had already joined the battle.
Through the Sky Eye, Sean Knight could sense that Lincoln Harrington in the tent was firing towards the distance while Douglas Cooper, who had been on observation duty above, had disappeared.
Judging by the impact points of the shots, there could be at most one or two people in the distance, probably sniping from afar.
Now with Elijah Hastings’s participation, they had suppressed the enemy’s firepower and even had the upper hand.
It seemed likely that Douglas Cooper had gone to flank and scout the enemy. That was an old tactic of our army.
Sean Knight then dismissed the thought of joining the battle and turned to walk deeper into the corridor.
He continued to the spot where he had dropped his engineer shovel and picked it up to proceed forward.
In front of him was a room about the size of the previous hall.
This stone room had a tenth-century coffin in the center, about one and a half meters wide and two and a half meters long, seemingly quite large.
The stone coffin was covered with intricate patterns and reliefs, and it was decorated with gemstones and gold and silver, looking very lavish.
In each of the four corners of the stone chamber stood a copper goddess statue, each holding a lamp, which must have been lit in the past but were now extinguished.
Looking up, the dome of the stone chamber was of Arabic style, dotted with gemstones that resembled a star chart.
Beyond that, there was nothing else in the stone chamber.
There was a front gate opposite Sean Knight which the water sound he had heard earlier was coming from.
Scanning the stone coffin with the Sky Eye, Sean Knight discovered inside was the skeleton of a man, the burial objects included a two-handed greatsword and a set of armor – nothing else.
So he headed directly towards the gate from where the water sounds emerged.
Stepping out of the gate, there was a stone platform beneath his feet, extending downward to the right, with about twenty steps.
The space he could see was about as large as the initial area with the stone warrior statues, but it was taller.
At the end of the stone steps was a subterranean river about two meters deep and five or six meters wide, flowing across the space.
The space was dome-shaped, with the water exit half a meter above the river surface and becoming unclear further in.
On the other end where the river water flowed, it was almost level with the river’s surface, as if flowing into a stone cave.
No wonder when they first broke into the stone cave, they found the air was flowing; it turns out to be a connected subterranean river.
The underground river water was very muddy, and Sean Knight could vaguely see that some creatures were present within it.
If it were ordinary people who had come here, they would have lost the interest to explore further.
But Sean Knight, out of habit, scanned with the Sky Eye and then discovered that this subterranean river hid a spatial realm.
At the bottom of the river lay four copper boxes, now covered in a patina of rust.
The boxes contained no other items but were full of irregularly shaped gold coins.
The gold coins had patterned heads on both sides, although Sean Knight didn’t recognize them.
These four boxes were not directly placed in the river water but lay nearly flush with the riverbed’s silt and stones.
Above them even lay a layer of silt and sand.
So even if one were to jump into the river, it would be difficult to detect their existence.
Salvaging these copper boxes filled with gold coins from two meters deep river water would not be a difficult task for Sean Knight, but for ordinary people, it would not be that simple.
Sean Knight felt that even Detective Yuanfang would find this matter suspicious if he were here.
The person hiding the gold coins wouldn’t make the hiding place so secretive. This would make it inconvenient for those who would come later to collect the coins.
He didn’t rush to go down but put away his gun, picked up the engineer shovel, and walked down the stone steps, carefully observing both the left and the right sides.
It didn’t take long for Sean Knight to notice something amiss.
The river current wasn’t too strong, and at the position inside the dark river’s water exit, there was a hidden sluice gate.
By dropping this sluice gate, the river water could be temporarily cut off.
So that’s how it was!
Sean Knight walked along the narrow river channel to the vicinity of the sluice gate, fumbled on the stone wall for a while, and soon found the switch for the sluice gate.
He pulled down hard on an iron handle disguised as a rock, and the suspended sluice gate fell with a boom, blocking the river water.
This sluice gate was designed to be one-time use?
With its water cut off, the river level immediately began to drop.
Although the junction at the gate wasn’t very tight, it would still take some time for the water to rise above it.
In less than five minutes, this dark river had almost dried up.
Some creatures from the river were panicking, hopping on the silt and sand at the riverbed.
Sean Knight then approached the location of the four boxes filled with gold coins.
