Chapter 983: Chapter 540: To Take, First Give

The second day, after breakfast, when Zack arrived, Sean Knight planned to take his people out for another look around.

After breakfast, served by the two girls, Elder Hassan finished wiping his hands and, upon seeing that Sean and his group were about to leave, asked:

"Mr. Knight, are you going out again today?"

"Yes. I want to find the location of that golden mine," Sean Knight confessed sincerely. "I believe it should be near the base. If we search carefully, we should be able to find it."

Hearing this, Hassan was genuinely relieved. He suddenly thought of something and said:

"Recently, I’ve heard that some strange treasure hunters have come to the wastelands. Be careful when you go out. Do you need me to send a few men with guns to follow you?"

"No need," Sean waved his hand, joking. Getting rid of Zack already wasn’t easy; having a few more people would be even more troublesome, wouldn’t it?

However, hearing about the arrival of more treasure hunters, Sean asked Elijah and the others to check their guns and bullets, so they wouldn’t be caught unprepared in case of a conflict.

Zack had already brought a new-equipped assault rifle and was very excited to get in the car.

"Zack, this is for you." Sean Knight took out ten golden coins and handed them to him. "It’s not much, but it’s a token of appreciation."

"Mr. Knight, I can’t take this," Zack quickly gestured with his hands, "I’m already happy just to come out with you. Besides, you are an honored guest of our tribe, I really can’t accept this!"

After thinking it over, Sean put the golden coins away and took out a wad of red banknotes instead:

"Then just take this. I know this money can be spent in your marketplace as well. Don’t mind the amount."

Zack declined again but eventually accepted it.

Having accepted the money, Zack was excited and volunteered when he learned that Sean Knight was headed near the base again:

"I know a place with signs of former digging. I can show you all around today."

With Zack, a local, leading the way, their journey became much easier.

Although Zack couldn’t provide specific coordinates, he could always bring Sean where he wanted in the shortest and most convenient way.

"There were signs that people stayed here a long time ago." Halfway up the hill, Zack pointed at a mountain cave and said, "Before the war, elders mentioned this was an ancient copper mine from a few thousand years ago; it was just abandoned after the copper ore was all extracted."

At the cave entrance, there were some ore pieces with green rust on them and signs of where people had made fires.

Though hot outside, there was a cool breeze emanating from the cave entrance.

"Shall we take a look inside?" Zack looked at Sean and asked.

"Let’s take a look." Sean activated Sky Eye, noticing that indeed there were traces of human activity—not recent, probably from several months or even years ago.

He looked around; they were only one or two kilometers from the base, so it indeed seemed possible.

About ten meters into the cave, it felt like walking into an air-conditioned room as the sweat that had surfaced on them quickly dried up.

Zack even felt a chill.

"Mr. Knight, it doesn’t really seem possible for a mine to be here, does it?" he couldn’t help but tighten his clothes, saying, "I see no signs of anyone walking around here..."

He genuinely felt cold!

But seeing that Sean and Elijah appeared unaffected, behaving normally, Zack was puzzled. Weren’t they cold?

Walking about two hundred meters inside, Sean noticed vertical shafts going downward, but beyond that, no traces of human activity.

"Let’s go out; this isn’t it."

The group retreated from the cave, and Zack, stepping out to the entrance, felt the sun’s warmth again, and once more felt hot.

But after being in the sun for just two minutes, he found the inside more comfortable and couldn’t help remarking:

"It’s just like an air-conditioned room in there, really comfortable. It would be nice to live there during the summer."

Sean said nothing, scanning the surroundings.

He had already checked three sides of the base and hadn’t found any issues.

Only the south side, with its hill plains, was left.

Sean had not paid much attention to that area, mainly because he subconsciously thought it unlikely for the golden mine to be in the plain.

The mountainous regions, on the other hand, seemed more probable.

Now it seemed he might have been mistaken.

Currently on the north side of the base, to get to the south side, they would have to cross through the base.

As they reached the base, Elijah suddenly said:

"Boss, there are people in the base!"

No sooner had he spoken than several people burst out of the base, two of them carrying guns and two others holding metal detectors.

Seeing Sean’s car, the strangers showed strong wariness on their faces.

"Mr. Knight, should we go in?" Zack was far from timid, this was their domain!

"Let’s go around," Sean didn’t want to cause trouble or provoke misunderstandings, "we’ll head to the south side."

Zack was somewhat reluctant but still followed Sean’s instructions, rolled down the car window, and shouted a few words to the others before driving towards the south side of the base.

Those few watched Sean’s car leave, only relaxing after the car had gone far. They eventually returned to the base.

However, they left one person behind, keeping watch in the direction Sean and his group had gone—presumably worried about them doubling back.

All of this was seen by Douglas Cooper, who was sitting on top of the pickup’s carriage compartment.

The south side was mostly flat ground with occasional hills, resembling an alluvial plain created by floods from the north side.

The car stopped on the highest hill in the area.
