Chapter 855: Chapter 496: Amazing Hypnosis!_3
Sean Knight didn’t pay much attention to the wrathful deity statue; it was merely made of clay and not clad in iron wrapped around gold as described in "Seven Swords Under The Tianshan Mountains," so it didn’t pique his interest.
There was ash in the incense burner in front of the statue, but it seemed old, clearly not from incense burnt in the past two days.
Given the dilapidated state of the temple, there likely weren’t many monks left, so they probably couldn’t keep up with its maintenance.
After looking around, there didn’t seem to be anything of value in the main hall, so Sean and Douglas Cooper headed towards the back.
Upon leaving the hall, they saw Elijah Hastings vigilantly surveying the surroundings, while a monk lay on the ground in a pool of blood.
Next to the monk was a Type 38 rifle that was severely worn. Sean picked it up and found that it contained only one bullet left.
It seemed the monks weren’t wealthy!
"Let’s go, we must continue!" said Sean as he discarded the gun, "The sound of gunfire has probably already alerted our foes; we need to move faster!"
"Boss, are any of these two monks the one who harmed Captain Hastings earlier?" Douglas followed and asked.
"No, but one of them was from earlier in the corridor, planning to shoot," Sean said as they walked, "There’s more than one monk in this temple, we still have to be careful."
Past the main hall, the space opened up into a large square with an even larger main hall on the opposite side.
However, the square was overgrown with lots of shrubbery and weeds, seemingly untended for a long time.
"Let’s go around!" Sean suggested, "The space here is too open, and if the opponent has guns, going in is like asking to be shot!"
Elijah and Douglas both agreed, as they were already thinking the same—tactically, they were more skilled than Sean.
The three of them moved quickly and within minutes, made it to the rear of the hall.
"Keep the noise down, I hear someone!" Sean suddenly gestured, and the other two immediately stopped, "Let’s sneak up on them!"
The trio stealthily approached and soon discovered two monks lying in ambush behind an improvised barrier at the back of the hall, looking in the direction of the hall as if they were planning to ambush Sean and his team.
Elijah and Douglas signalled to each other, intending to capture the two monks alive.
When they were about seven or eight meters away from the monks, the monks seemed to sense something and one turned his head. Realizing they couldn’t take them alive, Elijah raised his gun and fired!
Douglas did the same, and the two monks were instantly killed.
When Elijah checked their bodies, he discovered they were both holding hand grenades!
They had clearly been prepared to die with their enemies!
Sean noticed that these monks were not tall, but by their facial features, they didn’t seem to be indigenous people from the area like Guide Gru, but rather resembled people from a certain island country!
While they moved, Sean was observing the surroundings and spotted alleys that led to several courtyards nearby.
After some thought, Sean decided to search each house one by one – starting with the main hall they hadn’t visited before. The enemies there had been cleared, so it should no longer be dangerous.
Their search in the main hall turned fruitless, the hall housed a Buddha Statue holding treasures, carved from a single huge tree of phoebe zhennan, a wood valuable in its own right.
However, the statue was too big to carry out, measuring at least two meters in height.
Sean remained silent, knowing he would have to wait until he was alone to transport it into his spatial realm.
After circling the square once more and finding nothing of interest, the three of them continued their search further back.
Sean was convinced that the treasure Haruda Chika spoke of was here, so he searched patiently, room by room.
Even though some of the front main halls were relatively well-preserved and seemed to be maintained, the majority of the buildings were in ruins, with some even having collapsed.
Still, they left no house unchecked, but after half an hour, they hadn’t come across another soul.
They were circling the temple’s perimeter, and as they continued further back, they were approaching the rear of the temple.
From atop a wall, Sean saw an area resembling a pagoda forest.
There were many small pagodas and he could vaguely make out grave mounds as well.
Could it be a burial ground?
After another careful look around and seeing no one, Sean pointed in that direction and said,
"Let’s go check it out over there!"
The three, still in combat formation, quietly approached the edge of the pagoda forest.
"Eh? Boss, this place looks like it’s frequented by visitors, look, there are burnt offerings! And it’s very well maintained!"
Douglas, with his keen eyes, immediately spotted the irregularity.
Sean nodded; it was evident that this place was regularly cared for.
At a glance, the area was packed with at least thirty or forty stone pagodas and several hundred grave mounds, large and small!
Walking through this forest of pagodas, the feeling wasn’t one of serene reverence, but rather an eerie atmosphere pervaded.
"Boss, are these the graves of esteemed monks who attained enlightenment? Why does it feel like there’s a heavy yin qi here?" Douglas couldn’t help asking.
Sean didn’t respond, but suddenly noticed a small grave mound at the front.
This mound wasn’t much different from the others, but Sean could see it was visited more frequently—more so by the same person’s repeated visits than any other mound.
Activating Sky Eye, Sean smiled.
He had finally found it!
He looked around, intending to find a tool so he could start digging.
Just then, a faint fragrance wafted from upwind and entered their nostrils.
Douglas sniffed and couldn’t help saying,
"What’s that scent? It’s quite pleasant..."
"Hold your breath!" was Sean’s immediate reaction, while Elijah also shouted,
"Be careful! It’s the same as before... this scent is definitely problematic!"
The trio promptly held their breath, knowing an attack was imminent!
Whether they could turn the tables and counterstrike was all down to this moment!
