Chapter 828: Chapter 488: Isn’t This Change of Heart a Bit Too Quick?_3
When he was a child, swimming in the river had left him a painful lesson when a piece of iron wire pierced his foot, and to this day, he dared not take off his shoes when wading in the wilderness.
He couldn’t understand how these children could run around barefooted without fear of sharp stones or wooden thorns piercing their feet.
Maybe their feet had grown calluses over time, so they no longer feared such things?
Lost in his random thoughts, the car was already driving down the avenue.
This truly was a sea of green, with trees so tall that it wasn’t an exaggeration to say they obscured the sky. The only downside was the annoying variety of bugs that came with it.
That’s when the antiscolic powder came in handy.
Lincoln Harrington drove seriously, looking slightly tense, always on the alert for children who might dart out from the side of the road.
Cheryl Suweton, meanwhile, looped her arm through Sean Knight’s, whispering to him,
"Haruda Tomoko’s classmate, named Dutt Rivera, does indeed descend from a princely family. Although the prince state is no more, some power still exists, as well as the wealth accumulated by his ancestors, making his family very affluent and influential."
As Cheryl played with Sean’s hand, she continued,
"This Dutt went to Waseda University, where he met Haruda Tomoko. According to her, Dutt pursued her, but she was too busy with her studies to agree, so they maintained a friendship."
As she spoke, Cheryl took Sean’s finger, put it in her mouth, and began to gently nibble on it.
At that moment, Sean thought of Waseda University, a school with a high reputation. Certainly, he knew of it because, years earlier, Japan’s TV dramas had been popular in China.
It is said that domestically within Japan, only truly excellent students can get into this university, but for international students, the story was different; apparently, even those with low grades could get in.
Sean had only heard about this and did not know the actual situation.
Feeling the tingling sensation on his fingers, he looked down to see Cheryl biting his finger with a somewhat dazed look, so he gently tapped her,
"Be careful, we’re in the car."
Cheryl smiled, released his finger, but held onto his arm even tighter.
Sean had no choice but to let her be.
Lincoln Harrington, driving ahead, seemed oblivious to everything and simply drove on.
Two hours later, the car stopped at a flat area. Per Haruda Tomoko’s idea, they planned to head to a nearby town for some curry rice, but Sean refused, feeling self-heating food was better compared to the sticky curry rice.
And Cheryl didn’t leave either, sticking with instant noodles instead. With no choice, Haruda Tomoko also stayed.
Since they saved some time by eating quickly, they arrived at a small city to rest half an hour ahead of the planned time in the evening.
The hotel had already been booked, and although not as nice as the previous night’s, the arrangements still appeared very thoughtful.
"Does your classmate have influence here already?" Cheryl asked in surprise.
They were still one day’s journey from Dutt Rivera’s princely state, but to have the hotel pre-booked along with meals showed Dutt’s substantial influence.
"I didn’t expect that either." Haruda Tomoko wore a surprised look with a bit of pride, and, of course, her delight was obvious.
Being honored by a classmate naturally made her feel glorious.
Although they were arranged to have single rooms for the night, Cheryl ended up in Sean’s room, making Haruda Tomoko next door lament that she might have dark circles under her eyes again tomorrow.
After all, the hotel conditions were decent, but the soundproofing was seriously lacking!
The next morning, Haruda Tomoko really did appear with dark circles under her eyes.
At breakfast, she looked resentfully at Cheryl and Sean, thinking, how could you two manage to go all night?
Back in my university days, all those who bragged about their prowess usually ’surrendered’ very quickly.
And yet, here were you two, planning an all-nighter, apparently!
And what was more infuriating, they spent a long time at it yet looked so fresh and lively in the morning!
Was there any justice?
She turned to look at Elijah Hastings and several others, hoping to find some allies, only to see they looked much fresher than herself!
No signs of staying up all night!
Was she hallucinating? Suffering auditory illusions?
That shouldn’t be the case!
Cheryl, on the other hand, was quite pleased with herself. Though she had no experience with other men, she could tell that the prudish-seeming Haruda Tomoko probably had quite a history.
If she could make Haruda Tomoko feel miserable, then she ought to be very proud of herself.
After breakfast and setting off again, the next stretch of road was indescribable.
Even the usually cautious Lincoln Harrington couldn’t help but complain,
"This road would have been considered below par twenty years ago, domestically. Now every village is connected by decent roads, even my relatives’ village has better roads than this! Watch out for those holes, boss!"
The road wasn’t just full of potholes, but also littered with various animal dung, impossible to avoid.
The smell was unpleasant.
"Just bear with it, it might get better once we reach our destination," said Sean, now capable of holding his breath for over 10 minutes at a time, so a bit of smell hardly affected him.
But Cheryl didn’t have that ability, so Sean could only comfort her in this way.
The car bounced along. Surprisingly yet expectantly, the road would occasionally improve significantly, only to become rough and pitted again.
One overwhelming realization for Sean was how crowded it was!
However, when he thought about it, it made sense; the land area was one-third of China’s, but the population was almost the same. How could it not be crowded?
The extreme divide between rich and poor was very evident, a reality that reminded Sean of what he had seen and read about online.
As dusk approached, the car stopped in front of a manor that looked incredibly luxurious, with a strong local tycoon vibe, featuring many traditional buildings mixed with some aspects of Western architecture.
People were already there to welcome them.
Sean immediately noticed the young man standing in the middle, with a typical dense head of hair and big beard.
This must be Dutt Rivera.
Haruda Tomoko stepped out of the car first and the two greeted each other with an enthusiastic hug.
Sean got out of the car with Cheryl just in time to hear Haruda Tomoko introducing them.
Dutt’s gaze was immediately drawn to Cheryl.
That feeling... made Sean sense danger!
