Chapter 780: Chapter 470: The Mysteriously Off-Track Policeman and the Very Silly Kanda
Early the next day, before the sun had risen, Monica Reed was already awake.
She saw Elijah Hastings sitting in front of the tent, and greeted him with a smile:
"Good morning, Mr. Hastings!"
"Why aren’t you sleeping a little longer?" Hastings asked.
He knew Monica Reed had a tough time at her Uncle’s Shop, when it was said she couldn’t eat or sleep well, it was true.
Otherwise, how could she be seventeen years old and look like fifteen or sixteen with clear signs of malnutrition.
"I slept enough." Monica explained, "Seriously, these two days have been the best I’ve slept in years."
"All right, go and rinse off." Hastings pointed towards the gentle river water, "The water is pretty clean, there are no wild animals around now."
"Okay."
Monica agreed, took the wash bag Hastings had bought for her and headed for the riverbank.
She was well aware of the care shown by both older brothers, it was not sufficient to express her gratitude with mere thanks anymore. She will have to find a better way to return the favor in the future.
By this time, Sean Knight was also up, he said to Monica:
"I have already asked a classmate of mine to look into your Aunt’s situation. Rest assured, that classmate of mine is a local from Ocean City. It’s quite easy for him to find people, especially when the addresses are quite specific. We might even get some news back today."
After the three of them finished freshening up, they had breakfast, packed up the tent, then drove off along the route Sean Knight had previously confirmed.
Asada Kasai knocked on the front gate of Tanaka’s Ancestral Temple.
A middle-aged Williams opened the door.
"You are ...." Asada Kasai, who had received the report, knew there was only Old Monk Horton in this temple, now this middle-aged Martin is ...
"I am a villager, responsible for Venerable Horton’s meals." The middle-aged woman said after bowing her head: "After Venerable Horton went missing, the village asked me to look after this temple."
"I am a police officer. I came here to look, to collect some clues." Asada Kasai took out her police badge and showed it to the woman, then said:
"When did you discover that Venerable Horton was missing? Did you move anything inside?"
"Yesterday morning. We usually sent food to Venerable Horton as usual, but found nobody answering. Then we pushed the door open and found that the people who came to pray the day before, along with Venerable Horton, were both missing."
Asada Kasai had already known these circumstances when she received the report, now hearing them again just wanted to confirm one more time.
She went into the Ancestral Temple and walked on with the woman.
In the main hall, the smell of incense and candles was intense, Asada Kasai looked around and found nothing incongruous, but her eyes fell on the lock of the Side Palace.
"What’s in here?" She asked the woman.
"We don’t know. The master never opens it and doesn’t allow us to inquire. Apparently, when a pious visitor tried to inquire, the master scolded them, saying it contained Tanaka’s family relics and mustn’t be opened."
Asada Kasai glanced at it, it would take two people to open it according to the procedure, her partner wasn’t around, so she didn’t open it immediately, she planned to look elsewhere first.
She took a look around the main hall, and didn’t discover anything inappropriate — mainly because Elijah Hastings had cleaned it up too well, and two days had passed, there really was no trace left on the ground.
Asada Kasai, under the woman’s guidance, came to the rear bungalow.
"The Master usually stays here." The woman pointed to Venerable Horton’s Meditation Room and said, "The one next to it is the guest room."
Asada Kasai went in to look, found it was tidied up very cleanly and obviously it was not left in a hurry or by accident.
There was a medicinal smell in the kitchen, Asada Kasai opened the herbal medicine cabinet, took a glance, and recognized nothing.
She closed the cabinet door, exited the room, and went to the two guest rooms.
Again, she found nothing.
Then she went around to the back.
She immediately spotted the burnt wall corner of the bungalow, and the disturbed traces in the Vegetable Field.
"What is that?" Asada Kasai pointed at the wall corner and asked, "When was it burnt?"
"It should be ... the day before yesterday." The woman thought for a moment and said, "We did see the smoke and fire then, but the Venerable Horton didn’t say anything, and because it was in the corner, we didn’t come over."
Asada Kasai walked over there, picking up a Tree Branch along the way to turn over the burnt rubble.
She could see the distorted incense burner, and some bricks and stones.
The original memorial tablets were made of wood, but they had already turned to ash by now.
Basically, there was no clue to be found about what had been there.
Asada Kasai was for no apparent reason, somewhat frustrated.
She couldn’t find any clues!
No human bones or related items were present, clearly no person had been incinerated there.
Then she came to the disturbed part of the Vegetable Field.
"We dug and looked, there are no bodies buried here." The woman presumably guessed Asada Kasai’s thoughts and provided an explanation.
However, Asada Kasai noticed traces of disturbance nearby.
She was a police officer. Although she was not the best at the Police Station, she had taken over a fair number of cases. The clues she personally experienced or heard about, led her to suspect something.
She glanced around loosely, then picked up an Iron shovel and began to dig in the Vegetable Field.
The middle-aged woman, with a puzzled expression, asked:
"What are you digging here? Is there something buried? Do you need help?"
At the beginning, Asada Kasai was worried that this middle-aged woman might know something. But hearing what she said now, Asada Kasai lifted her head and said:
"Please dig here, I feel like there is something buried underneath."
