Chapter 779: Chapter 469: The case is filed, we’re going to be investigated! _3
Despite the length of time they’d spent in Kumamoto County, the two of them quickly found a new method of investigation.
They contacted the airport and the Shinkansen train service, then made a trip to the long-distance bus station.
They didn’t find any trace of Sean Knight at these venues, and concern crossed the faces of Ooyama Yousuke and Asada Kasai.
Although Asada Kasai did not outwardly seem to think that Knight and his team were guilty, there was now an official missing persons report. The old monk and Vicky Wilson were missing, and the case was in their hands, so naturally, she would strive to find the truth.
"You look around the county, I always feel that there’s something strange about the Tanaka’s Family Temple, I’ll go there and look for more clues." said Asada Kasai. "Vicky Wilson disappeared there, and if someone was killed, they should still be there."
Ooyama Yousuke thought for a while and said:
"Be careful. With the disappearance of Master Floyd, the people in the village are unstable. Who knows what they might do. Keep your phone available at all times."
"You relax, I know what to do." Asada Kasai nodded, then drove her Volkswagen Beetle in the direction of the Tanaka village.
Meanwhile, Sean Knight and his team were already on the road.
The car was speeding along, and when it started to get dark, they happened to find themselves in an isolated area...
"Let’s camp here for the night." Knight suggested. "We have tents and sleeping bags. Elijah and I will keep a watch shift. Monica, you sleep worry-free."
"I can also keep watch." Monica Reed, now completely comfortable around Knight and Hastings, boldly suggested. "When I worked at my uncle’s shop, I sometimes had to stand guard."
"No need. We’re two grown men here, how could we ask you to keep the night watch?....Of course, you also have your own task. Dinner is on you!"
Monica was actually worried Sean wouldn’t give her any tasks, so naturally, she was happy now.
The things they’d brought to eat were semi-prepared foods like self-heating rice pots and such. Hastings patiently taught Monica how to properly add water to avoid scalds.
Then, he and Sean started setting up camp.
The site they decided to pitch the tents on was a grassy patch lower down the highway, near the riverbank. The terrain here was higher than the river surface, so there were no worries about flooding. Fifty or so meters from the highway, there was no fear of any passing cars causing harm.
Self-heating food was a nice novelty for the first one or two times, but it soon lost its charm.
Fortunately, they had brought along some pickled salty vegetables, some rice chili sauce, and spicy chili threads, a specialty product of Xinjiang.
It was Monica’s first time eating spicy chili threads. She was a bit tentative at first, but after a few bites, she found the taste to be absolutely delicious and immediately started eating with gusto.
After dinner, they tidied up and prepared to rest.
At this moment, Sean received a phone call from Douglas Cooper.
"Boss, I have some information to report to you."
"Speak." Sean had faith in Cooper. Even if they faced small troubles on their end, it wouldn’t affect Cooper.
It was all up to him at this point.
"The tour guide/translator I found introduced me to a Japanese man named Kannda Nakani. He ’took’ two cultural relics from his home and said he wants to sell them for some money. I don’t understand such matters, but this man was earnest when he claimed the relics were authentic, taken from China by his grandfather."
"What is it?" asked Sean, raising his eyebrows at the reasons and stories,.
"One is a small bronze tiger and another is a calligraphy piece by Wen Zhengming of the Song dynasty, "Thirteen Lines.""
"Hmm, send me a photo." said Sean, "If it’s real, take it."
"He says there are many more at home, but his grandfather won’t let him sell them. Oh, and he mentioned his grandfather is over eighty years old...."
Once the photos sent by Cooper came, Sean reviewed them and immediately dialed him back:
"Where are you? Send me the location, I’m coming to find you!"
The two items were indeed genuine, both of high value.
The bronze tiger was a ceremonial object, with blurred inscriptions on its back. As for the calligraphy by Wen Zhengming of Song dynasty, such works are not easily obtainable.
Perhaps the grandfather of this Kannda Nakani was also an old Japanese soldier!
How could Sean Knight let such a person slip by once he encounters him?
Douglas Cooper sent the location, so Sean Knight opened his phone’s map and began studying it.
If Douglas Cooper were on the east side of Kumamoto County, Sean and his group would need to return there and then take a different route.
But when Sean magnified the map, he discovered that their current route would lead them to a small town and on the same path as Douglas if they instead headed northeast.
Great, that’s decided then!
After Sean figured things out, he discussed the plan with Elijah Hastings and Monica Reed.
"I’m good here," said Elijah, having no issues with the change.
"I can also do it," Monica admitted reluctantly, although a little disappointed.
"Monica, don’t worry too much. We would still need time to search if we returned now. I’ve got a classmate in Ocean City who can keep an eye out for things. Maybe we’ll have found your aunt by the time we get back," Sean speculated.
"I can’t thank you enough!" Monica said, bowing deeply to Sean.
"Hey, stop that!" Sean hurriedly helped her back up, "Anyway, it’s getting dark. Go inside the tent. There are mosquitos around."
Knowing she wouldn’t have to take a night watch shift, Monica obediently retreated into the tent.
"Douglas said that their tour guide introduced them to a Japanese man who stole something from his grandfather and wants to sell it. And his grandfather is very likely an old Japanese soldier," Sean informed Elijah.
Both men sat beside the tent, watching the sun set over the river, discussing the impending plan.
"Boss, are you thinking of making a deal first or..."
"We’re already in some trouble. We can’t afford to make a lot of noise," Sean outlined his plan:
"The old Japanese soldier is likely around eighty years old now. I suspect he has quite a bit of stuff in his possesion. In that case, I’m going to take both the man and his stuff!"
"Yes, we can’t let him benefit!"
Both Sean and Elijah knew that after the defeat of Japan during the war, many Japanese war criminals were released by the Nationalist Party to consolidate their dominion and confront Mr. Barry and Siye.
During the trials, aside from the main war criminal, the Mikado who escaped, many middle and lower-rank soldiers managed to avoid punishment.
Some returned to Japan, whose humane nature was altered due to the atrocities they committed in China, committed serial and sexual murders in their society. Yet, most continued living peaceful lives.
Many of them, like the grandfather of Kannda Nakani, used the wealth, antiques, gold and silver plundered from China to live a life of luxury.
Not only did they show no remorse for their atrocities committed in China, they even flaunted it as an accomplishment.
Such people couldn’t be forgiven!
However, Sean started to suspect that the incidents involving the old monk and Vicky Wilson might have already attracted police attention.
Hence, they would have to change their approach in executing the plan.
They could no longer attract police attention. Even if the police couldn’t find any evidence, it would still be challenging for them to leave the Four Islands.
Therefore, Sean came up with a temporary solution.
What would be the old Japanese soldier’s ultimate desire?
Then let him have a taste of it!
Heh heh!
