Chapter 689: Chapter 439: After a Series of Thrilling Events...

How could there be a plane passing by in the deserted area of the desert?

"Could it be just passing through?"

"How could that be possible?" Lincoln Harrington shook his head, "The neighbouring country is at war, this area is essentially a de facto no-fly zone. Even the planes sent by certain countries for evacuation were forced to turn back..."

Elijah Hastings who had already disembarked added:

"It must have some special purpose. Perhaps the same as ours - after all, once this news gets out, it would be inevitable for it to spread among those few people!"

Sean Knight nodded and said:

"In that case, we can’t just easily rush over. Let’s set off immediately and speed towards our destination!"

"Okay!"

"Check the car thoroughly, we have to rely on this thing when we return, so we can’t afford any faults."

"Understood!"

The car started up again, not moving very fast, but it was almost always on the go.

Stopping every few hours to give the car a rest, though the respite wasn’t for long.

They took turns driving at night, while everyone else rested in the car.

Meanwhile, they were also on high alert, fortunately, until the dawn of the second day, they heard no more sounds of airplanes.

"Boss, we’re running out of gas." Lincoln said, "If we keep going, we won’t have enough fuel for the return trip."

"After we go another kilometer, we’ll proceed on foot!" Sean looked at the map, they were still tens of kilometers away from the mountain, and he made a decision:

"If we really find something, there’s no way we can carry it out just relying on the few of us. Leave the car here for now, and hide it well.

If we really find something, we can come back for the car, or even rent a plane!"

Elijah and the others had no objections and after driving some distance, they parked the car under the cliffside of the riverbank.

Having hidden the car well, the four of them began to walk.

Having only walked a few hundred meters, they were surprised to find an abundance of rubble in the river channel, and could even faintly hear a rumbling noise.

"What’s that noise?" Douglas Cooper couldn’t help but ask.

"I don’t know, something underground...could it be an underground river?" Elijah guessed.

"It’s quite possible!" Sean activated the Sky Eye to take a look and sure enough, there was an underground river about a dozen meters below the ground, and while the river was rapid, it wasn’t wide.

"So does this mean, the main reason this river ran dry, is because the water flowed underground?" As they walked, Douglas speculated.

"Hard to say."

After walking for a while, the rumbling noise disappeared.

Sean activated the Sky Eye again and found that the underground river was still there, but the surface of the river had widened, and the water flow had slowed.

They moved forward following the map, and within two more hours, they would reach the mountain.

"There’s water up ahead!" Elijah, who was leading the way, suddenly called out in a low voice, "There’s still water in this river!"

The rest of them, each carrying their backpacks, quickly rushed over.

Sure enough, there was a puddle of water here, but it was very murky, and there were plenty of animal and bird footprints nearby.

Clearly, this was a source of water for the local wildlife.

"Looks like we might have the chance to taste some fresh game!" Douglas said with a laugh, "I didn’t expect that in this barren place, there would still be so much life!"

They continued forward and saw that sparse weeds and shrubs began to appear on both sides of the river, but they all looked withered.

The height of the river bank had also become shorter, and the width was gradually narrowing, obviously, they were getting closer to the upstream part of the river.

Sean broke off a piece of grass and found that it was still very resilient, as if it was alive, but had shed its leaves because of the drought.

He had no doubt that once the rainy season arrived, this grass would be able to turn green and bloom instantly.

Occasionally, they could see a bird or two flying through the shrubs.

"Finally seeing some living things, so it doesn’t feel like we’re the only ones left in the world!" Elijah exclaimed.

"This might be another oasis." Lincoln guessed.

They continued their journey, eating on the move.

The lips of each of them were somewhat dry, but having been cleansed with energy, they were all far from ordinary, having stronger water retention abilities than average people.

All of a sudden, Sean shouted in a low voice:

"Everyone, take cover! Here comes another plane!"

Everyone instantly dispersed, each finding a hidden place, either under a rock or by the river bank.

Not long after, a plane roared past overhead.

"This plane is rather brazen..." Douglas couldn’t help but comment, "Actually daring to fly here... hey, holy shit!"

Before he could finish his sentence, two fighter planes chased after the passenger plane that just passed.

"It seems, not just any plane can fly here freely!" Douglas was slightly gloating.

Eversince they speculated that this plane might have the same purpose as them, Douglas wouldn’t hesitate in cursing these guys with the utmost malignance.

Hmm, trying to steal our business, courting death!

Once the planes had left, they continued forward, but after a while, they had to hide again.

The two old fighter planes flew back.

When the planes were gone, they set out again.

"Captain Hasting, do you think that passenger plane was shot down?" Douglas asked as they walked.

"Hard to say." Elijah shook his head, "We didn’t hear any sound, but it might just be too far away to hear."

After several bouts of interruption, they finally stopped in the river channel as the sun was about to set, and hadn’t been able to reach the predetermined mountain side.
