Chapter 608: Chapter 399: Please exchange our Douglas Home_2
This is also why Douglas Cooper later enlisted in the army, while his brother Alston Cooper stayed at home to go fishing with their father, Colin Cooper.
Although Colin Cooper is an expert sailor, he is a wimp in front of his wife, Vanessa Harrison, and he dare not say a word against her.
After all, he is over a decade older than Vanessa, and when Vanessa came to the village, she was considered the most beautiful woman there.
However, the once affluent Cooper family gradually declined due to the gynecological disease Vanessa suffered from when giving birth to Douglas.
It wasn’t until Douglas started working with Sean Knight that the Cooper family’s life began to improve again.
All the way there, Douglas was warning Sean about things, and Sean was always affirming, reassuring Douglas that he would only stay for half an hour at most.
After all, they were just there to pay respects, and it would be inappropriate if they caused trouble to the household.
He still wanted Douglas to continue working for him. The team of four was well-acclimated and they collaborated perfectly. Changing personnel would be a hassle.
When they arrived at the fishing village where the Cooper family resided, Sean found that this small fishing village a few kilometers away from the seaside was actually quite affluent.
It was probably planned that way, every household was a two-story building.
"This is a people-benefit project," Douglas explained as Sean watched curiously. "Every household was given a second floor--in fact, many families didn’t renovate the second floor. Everyone lives on the first floor, using the second as a warehouse."
Sean understood.
In the village where the Knight family lives, almost nobody built two-story houses. It was enough to have a spacious single-story house for convenience. The people in the village were used to stepping out of the house into their courtyards, so going upstairs always felt inconvenient.
The Cooper house was the fifth in the row of houses nearest to the sea in the village. It was evident that both the front gate and the outer wall of the two-story building had been newly renovated. It looked more beautiful than the other buildings.
"I called home earlier, so my family should be waiting right now." As they arrived and got out of the car, Douglas said:
"Let’s go, come on in."
The front gate was wide open. As soon as Sean entered, he heard a warm greeting from inside:
"This must be Mr. Knight, Douglas’s boss. What a talented individual!" A middle-aged woman walked out, smiling, followed by a bald middle-aged man and a young man who looked quite similar to Douglas.
Colin Cooper, Vanessa Harrison, Alston Cooper.
As expected, Vanessa was the head of the family, leading the way in welcoming them.
She was rather thin, having had sickness before. Some dark spots were visible on her face, and her skin wasn’t very good, but she looked healthy.
"Nice to meet you, Uncle Cooper, Ma’am." Sean greeted politely, shaking hands with Alston:
"You must be Alston, nice to meet you!"
"Look how polite Mr. Knight is, let’s go inside and chat." Vanessa smiled broadly.
Lincoln Harrington and Douglas brought in the gifts that Sean had bought.
"Come, have some tea!" Vanessa poured tea for Sean. "Douglas has earned quite a bit while working with you. If he doesn’t understand something, please guide him."
"Douglas has been doing really well, helping me a great deal," Sean smiled and said, holding the teacup. "Former soldiers really are different. One can handle the job of several people!"
"That’s good, that’s good!" Vanessa wasn’t expecting Sean to praise Douglas so highly. She was surprised and managed a laugh.
Alston couldn’t help but interject:
"Mr. Knight, it must be a lot easier to make money searching for treasure overseas, right? I heard that overseas pirate treasures are worth a lot!"
"Bro, it’s not that easy!" Douglas refuted his brother’s claim saying, "If it were that easy, everyone who goes abroad would be rich. They wouldn’t need to wash dishes or pick up garbage."
"Douglas, your brother was just making conversation! Why are you so uptight..." Vanessa frowned and told Douglas off when he contradicted his brother, "Showing off, are you?"
Douglas fell silent.
Seeing this, Sean understood. He put down his teacup and said with a smile:
"Well, if you put it that way, it is quite easy..."
Upon hearing Sean’s words, Alston immediately replied with a sense of triumph:
"I told you..."
"I mean, it’s easy for some. They might get lucky and find a treasure worth several million in one go. But it’s not easy either, someone might go searching for twenty years, find nothing, and lose everything in the process..."
He glanced at Colin Cooper, who was silently smoking a cigarette, and continued:
"It’s like going out to sea. If you’re lucky, you could come back with a boatload of big yellow wild fish and make a fortune. If you’re unlucky, you might be out there for half a month and only catch some small fish and shrimp, or even rip the net with no one to complain to."
After his words, the Coopers’ faces turned sour.
"I’m just making a comparison, no offense," Sean Knight added, before lifting his teacup to take a sip. "Great tea."
Throughout their exchange, Alston Cooper and Colin Cooper were trying to get close to Sean Knight, trying to get information about how he made his money abroad.
After hitting two soft nails with Knight, Alston rudely stood up and walked out.
Sean had originally planned on staying for about ten minutes, but Vanessa Harrison and Colin wouldn’t let him leave, insisting that he stay for the meal.
Sean was left with no choice but to stay as a guest.
It was lunchtime and a variety of seafood was served with rice.
From what he could see, the Coopers had indeed prepared a lavish meal. The variety and preparation method for the seafood opened up Knight’s eyes.
During the meal, Alston never returned. Vanessa made a phone call, and the impatient tone of voice on the other end could be heard by Knight.
Throughout, Colin didn’t say a word. It seemed that he had become accustomed to it.
After the meal, when Sean was planning to make his excuses to leave, Vanessa asked Colin to fetch the seafood dry goods that were to be given to him.
As soon as Colin left, Vanessa turned to Sean and said:
"Mr. Knight, I won’t hide it from you, our Colin is good at swimming and diligent in his work. As your business grows, you could take him along. Our whole family would be grateful to you!"
Caught off guard by Vanessa’s proposal, Sean hesitated for a moment before finally shaking his head and saying:
"You, I really don’t need too many people for the line of work I’m in. I already have enough staff..."
"Well, how about you leave Colin here and take Alston instead? Would that be okay?"
Knight turned his head to look at the entrance.
Colin stood at the door holding a bag of dry goods, his face darkened as he watched Vanessa.
Vanessa hadn’t expected Colin to be back so soon.
But since he had heard her, she no longer concealed her intention and said:
"Colin, since you’re back, let’s speak frankly. Alston has found a girlfriend. He said that without a stable job, you could take his place with Mr. Knight... "
"That’s out of the question." Knight noticed the red-rimmed eyes of Colin, suppressing his anger and immediately said:
"You, I need Colin precisely because he served in the Special Forces and he’s skillful. What I need in my line of work isn’t just good swimming and diligence, but dexterity.
I took a liking to Colin because he is skilful and can protect me when the time comes. Our line of work is dangerous, even though Alston is tall and burly, he’s not agile. He could get injured...
Don’t think that making money is easy for us, we’re also risking our lives! Are you willing to let Alston take this risk? Besides, I provide them with guns when we go out. Can Alston handle a gun? Dare he shoot someone?"
After he said this, even though Vanessa was half believing and half doubting, she avoided discussing the issue any further.
As Knight moved towards the courtyard, preparing to leave, more than a dozen people suddenly rushed in from outside the gate. They ranged from young to middle-aged, with even some elderly among them.
Seeing all these people enter, Vanessa was also a little surprised.
Upon seeing Knight, these people immediately surrounded him, chattering excitedly:
"Are you Colin’s boss?"
"Are you the one who made Colin rich? What do you think of me? Take me with you?"
"You’re really talented to look so young, Alston wasn’t wrong, was he?"
In that moment, Knight was completely stunned.
However, he reacted quickly. Alston must have leaked the news of his meeting with the Coopers.
