Chapter 223: Chapter 206: Crisis Upon Crisis!
Sean knew it was his turn. He walked around the stone platform twice, looked around, looked down at the platform, and finally came to a corner. Then he told Elijah and Lincoln:
"Come and help me move this stone!"
Looking at the ordinary-looking stone, no one would think there was anything special about it.
But when Sean spoke, Elijah and Lincoln immediately went over, took a shovel from their backpacks, and helped pry the stone up.
The other people gathered around.
Underneath the stone was a smaller one embedded among the others, which didn’t seem special either.
But no one disturbed Sean’s actions.
He continued to pry open the smaller stone and then saw an iron ring underneath it.
Sean said to the others:
"Stand aside!"
By this time, no one doubted Sean.
Seeing that everyone had stepped aside, he pulled the iron ring in a circle.
The stone in the center of the platform suddenly sank, revealing downward stairs.
It was about one person high and one meter wide, with a different atmosphere coming from inside.
Hans couldn’t wait to rush down!
"Be careful!" Sean managed to remind them.
Mila and Jason followed one by one, even the injured Gessen limped down.
Septimius looked at the passage as if facing a formidable enemy, then looked back at Sean, suddenly knelt down, and mumbled a bunch of words.
Sean didn’t understand, so he hurriedly helped Septimius back up.
Elijah asked:
"Boss, are we going down?"
"Yes, of course." Sean went down as well, saying as he walked:
"Walk slowly; there must be traps inside."
"Understood!" Elijah and Lincoln both nodded and followed Sean.
Septimius hesitated for a moment, then jumped off the platform and ran into the distance.
As they walked further into the corridor, it grew darker. Sean turned on his flashlight and found the place entirely made of stone. Although it was underneath the jungle, the corridor was extremely dry.
It felt like they had walked more than twenty meters when the path began to level out, and the footsteps ahead got louder.
After walking another ten or so meters, Sean saw Hans and his group standing there.
There were two passages ahead, one on the left and one on the right.
Seeing Sean arriving, Hans immediately asked:
"Sean, which way do we go?"
Sean activated his Sky Eye and saw that the two passages were shaped like the letter Y, both extending deep underground. There was no visible difference within at least ten meters.
He shook his head and said:
"I can’t tell."
In fact, he did notice something: the stone floor of the left passage had lighter traces from being walked on, while the right was a bit heavier.
However, he didn’t plan to say this because he wasn’t sure what was inside, so no guarantees could be made.
"If you had to choose, which way would you go?" Hans seemed to trust Sean’s judgment.
"If it were me, I would go right." Sean said.
"Alright, we’ll go right." Hans decided immediately.
"I’ll go first." Sean looked at the group and said, "If there are traps, I have more experience."
No one argued with him this time.
Walking about ten meters through the right passage, Sean stopped.
"What’s wrong?" Hans asked.
"There should be a pitfall ahead." Sean pointed to the front and said, "The flipping kind."
He took the shovel, walked forward two steps, crouched down, and tapped the stone slab gently a few times. The stone slab then flipped over, revealing the empty hole beneath.
"Be careful when crossing it and jump over. Oh, and make a mark here." Sean reminded.
Elijah took out two fruits from his backpack, crushed them to get the juice, and applied it on both sides of the stone slab.
Everyone jumped over and continued walking for twenty more meters, passing two more flipboard traps. Then, they saw a stone wall blocking the way.
"Were we supposed to go left earlier?" Jason asked doubtfully.
"If I’m not mistaken, this stone wall should be movable," Sean said.
He started tapping on the wall nearby.
After a while, there was no result, and even Hans started to get anxious.
Green couldn’t stand it anymore. He said:
"Why don’t we try the other side? This might not be the right passage."
As Sean continued to try, Elijah said coldly:
"Why don’t you go there then?"
Green didn’t reply but looked at Jason.
Jason looked at Hans.
Hans hesitated for a moment and told Jason:
"I still trust Sean. But if you want to go see on the other side, that’s fine too. If you find a path there, come back and let us know. You all have contributed a lot to this mission, and I will double the rewards!"
After hearing this, Jason’s face eased a bit. He glanced at Sean, who was still searching, and said to Green:
"Let’s go take a look on the other side!"
Green glanced at Elijah and followed Jason.
Elijah snorted coldly and ignored him.
The footsteps in the passage slowly faded.
Jason led Green back to the fork in the road, and Green whispered, "Captain, should we really notify them if we find something?"
"Hmph, let’s talk about it if we find something," Jason didn’t say much and walked into the left passage.
Fortune favors the brave. He had been a mercenary for many years, experiencing life and death, and had long seen it all.
If he could get the treasure this time, he could retire!
Ordinary mercenaries don’t earn tens or hundreds of millions at a time, like in movies or novels.
As a mercenary like Jason, although they earn money, they spend a lot too. In many cases, they only earn a bit more than American white-collar workers, but they risk their lives for it.
