Chapter 211: Chapter 200: Out of the Wolf Pack, Into the Tiger’s Den
Like Sean, the others also changed their opinion about the residents of the tribe.
It made sense, as harmless inhabitants would not likely survive in such a place.
After breakfast, the tribal residents sent someone to guide Sean and his group as per the agreement.
Sean noticed that Doncaster Foster and his men had not left.
Hans Hunter also noticed this and said to Sean:
"I suspect Doncaster wants to follow us! I’ll never let him succeed!"
He asked the Guide through Septimius Coleman to take them to a place with colorful flowers, which terrified the Tribal Warrior!
Sean guessed that Hans intended to lead Doncaster and his men into danger, but he didn’t say anything.
In the jungle, protecting oneself was the top priority; what did it matter to him about the life and death of Doncaster and his men?
Looking at the sky, Sean found that they were heading in the southeast direction.
After walking for half a day, they took a break, during which Jason told Hans:
"Someone is indeed following us. My sensor was triggered."
Sean listened curiously, unaware of such a device.
Seeing Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington’s "No big deal" expressions, Sean understood this must be insider knowledge.
Hans’ body was noticeably worn out after several days of travel, and he slowed down considerably after lunch.
Mila Ward suggested taking a break, but Hans waved it off:
"We’ll walk a little further, past the marshland up ahead, then we should have time to rest for a while."
Sean was surprised that Hans had some memory of this place. After walking for nearly an hour, they finally saw the marshland.
The tribal warrior led them around the marshland, proceeding cautiously.
A small Grey Bear was startled by the group and ran towards them but stopped in the presence of so many people; panicking, it ran away and fell into the marshland, its body swallowed by the marsh in no time!
It was their first time seeing such a scene in reality, though they had seen it in movies and TV shows before, and they all broke out in a cold sweat!
Their previous carefree attitude vanished, and they immediately became cautious!
This was a life-threatening situation!
Although they were walking on the edge of the marshland, the ground beneath their feet was still damp, and their footprints disappeared in a matter of moments.
It was indeed a great place to hide one’s tracks.
They walked around the marshland for seven or eight kilometers before reaching a relatively dry spot.
The tribal warrior spoke at length, and Septimius translated, saying that this place was not the endpoint of the marshland, but a resting area in the middle.
It would take several more kilometers to leave the marshland, but as it was getting dark, the warrior could only take them this far.
Hans immediately objected, insisting that they must leave the marshland. He then handed over a few cans to the warrior.
Having tasted the canned food at noon, the warrior knew it was delicious, so he agreed.
They rested there for the night and continued to walk around the marshland the next day.
However, halfway through their journey, a mercenary screamed, clutching their leg and hopping to the other side of the group!
He held a snake in his hand, which looked similar to the aquatic grass and had stopped moving.
But the mercenary’s face turned pale as he shouted:
"It’s poisonous! I’ve been bitten by a poisonous snake!"
The crowd panicked!
Jason and others immediately took out the snake antidote from their backpacks and administered it to the wounded man.
Lincoln Harrington also stepped forward to help, tearing open the man’s trouser leg, making a cross-shaped incision on the wound, and squeezing out the venomous blood.
Septimius was likewise alarmed and urgently spoke to the tribal warrior.
But the warrior just shook his head and muttered something.
After being translated, it was understood that the snake’s venom was incurable!
The warrior added that there was only one snake pit in this area, and it was filled with danger. They had to leave immediately!
Without waiting for the others to act, the warrior quickly ran ahead!
Jason still didn’t believe it when Elijah suddenly yelled:
"Snakes!"
Indeed, many snakes were slithering around them!
"Let’s go!" Elijah and Lincoln Harrington rushed to support Sean and followed the Tribal Warrior.
Jason had no choice but to order two soldiers to support the bitten mercenary while two others assisted Mila and Hans. Jason carried the wounded man’s backpack and gun, quickly catching up.
No one had expected that the snakes’ territory would span nearly one kilometer. When they finally escaped the snake-infested area and stopped to catch their breath, the warrior in front also paused.
The mercenary carrying the injured soldier suddenly exclaimed:
"I can’t feel his breath anymore!"
They laid the wounded mercenary down, and everyone saw that he wasn’t breathing!
The snake was indeed venomous!
A mercenary angrily blamed Hans, shoving him:
"It’s your fault! If you hadn’t changed the route arbitrarily, he wouldn’t have died!"
Jason stepped in to block the angry mercenary and reprimanded him before walking away with a gloomy expression.
He took the dead mercenary’s badge and closed his eyes.
"Burn him!"
In the end, the injured mercenary was cremated, and his ashes buried there.
"Mr. Hunter, although my man was impulsive just now, you do bear some responsibility for this. So..."
"I know, I know!" Hans said with an apologetic look, "I didn’t want this to happen either. When we get back, I’ll double his compensation!"
Upon hearing this, Jason and the other two mercenaries’ expressions eased somewhat.
