Chapter 209: Chapter 199: Dangerous Road All the Way

At midnight, Sean was sound asleep in his tent when he was suddenly awakened by the sound of gunshots, "Bang, bang, bang, bang!"

Sean quickly sat up and heard Elijah Hastings outside the tent saying:

"Boss, it’s okay. A pack of Jungle Wolves attacked the camp, and Jason and the others are dealing with them."

With that said, Sean felt relieved.

He heard footsteps outside the tent, some people were guarding the area while others left.

As expected, the gunshots soon died down, followed by the sound of footsteps.

Emerging from his tent, Sean saw Jason and his party dragging a few dead wolves back to the camp.

Meanwhile, Lincoln Harrington was dragging a different kind of animal over to him.

"Is this a roe deer?" Sean curiously asked, looking at the animal, which was slightly larger than a lamb and resembled a deer.

"I think it’s a muntjac or something similar." Elijah said, not recognizing the creature. Lincoln shook his head, "I’m not sure either. I think it’s a deer of some kind. It got frightened by the wolves and was just hit by a stray bullet. It couldn’t be saved."

"Let’s add it to our meal tomorrow then." If it had still been alive, Sean wouldn’t have minded letting it go, but since it was already dead, it might be a good choice for food.

Seeing Sean, Elijah, and Lincoln discussing the small deer, Jason and the others couldn’t help but look on enviously.

They brought back the wolves, intending to try some exotic game, but how could wolf meat compare with deer?

As daylight broke, everyone in the camp began to stir.

Most of them had had a rough night’s sleep due to the gunfire, so everyone appeared to be less energetic in the morning.

With two separate bonfires going, Sean and Elijah made porridge while Lincoln skinned the small deer and added some minced meat to the mix, creating a fragrant meat porridge.

Hans Hunter and his group ate dry rations, boiled water, and jerky. But both parties minded their own business.

After breakfast, they boarded the boat and continued a few more kilometers down the river. They no longer saw any traces of human activity along the way, except for the occasional totem pole standing erect in the water branches, which they couldn’t decipher.

Upon these totem poles were grotesque statues with one or three eyes, watching these intruders closely.

The river gradually narrowed until their boat could no longer advance, at which point everyone disembarked.

They agreed with the ship owner to come back and pick them up in half a month, and the boat quickly turned and sped away.

In the jungle, the occasional bird cries and sparse buzzing of insects made the atmosphere feel heavy and humid. In no time, everyone was drenched in sweat and feeling uncomfortable.

Sean had applied the strange medicine to his body before getting off the boat and had given some to Both Elijah and Lincoln, so they didn’t feel any discomfort.

But the mercenaries weren’t so lucky.

"Leeches!" Mila Ward screamed, frantically slapping her legs.

Looking over, Sean saw three earthworm-like leeches attached to Mila’s calves, greedily sucking her blood!

Realizing it, hundreds if not thousands of desert leeches were coming from the surrounding bushes and leaves, attracted by the scent of human flesh!

The leeches seemed to avoid Sean, Elijah, and Lincoln, seeking out the remaining mercenaries!

"Hurry up and move forward! We’ll deal with this later!" Jason, noticing this, rushed forward, pulling Hans with him!

Mila was grabbed by another mercenary by the arm as they sprinted together.

The mercenaries had experience in jungle warfare, but they had never seen such a swarm of desert leeches charging at them!

If they didn’t move, they might be sucked dry in no time!

Sean, Elijah, and Lincoln began to run as well.

Luckily, the leeches were chasing them, or else they might not be able to run so fast with the heavy bags they were carrying!

They managed to run a few kilometers before finally stopping.

Hans and Mila sat gasping for breath on the ground, leaning against tree roots, while Jason and the others checked their surroundings.

Sean scanned the area and said:

"There’s nothing around here for now."

As they were running away earlier, they saw a few skeletal remains on the ground.

Apparently, the area was the territory of the desert leeches, and some animals had met their end by them as well.

Another mercenary helped Mila remove the three leeches. The creatures had doubled in size since they first attacked!

After applying medicine, the wound continued to bleed — Sean remembered reading that the creatures would first inject an anticoagulant toxin before feeding on blood, preventing the wound from clotting.

It seemed to be the same principle as mosquitoes injecting an anesthetic toxin before feeding, so the host wouldn’t feel the initial pain.

After treating their wounds and resting for a bit, their guide, Septimius Coleman, climbed up a huge tree like a monkey.

He observed the area for a while, and after coming down, he spoke to Hans in rapid mumbling.

Mila translated after listening to him:

"He says we’re now north of the tribe. If we head south, after a few kilometers, we’ll come across the same tribe you encountered before."

Hans nodded and said:

"Alright, let’s go!"

The beginning of the journey had been smooth, and Hans was satisfied. Although they had been chased by leeches, they managed to escape, so it wasn’t too much trouble.

The group pressed on, and the jungle ahead grew denser with more shrubbery. Occasionally, small animals darted in and out of the undergrowth, fleeing in panic.

The mercenaries and Lincoln leading the way occasionally even had to bat away snakes as they went.

Sean sighed quietly, realizing just how dangerous this place was!

Seeing it was almost noon, they stopped to rest at a relatively dry clearing.

Elijah and Lincoln started a fire, and cooked the deer meat they had prepared earlier.
