Chapter 188: Chapter 187: Consider This As A Break And Entertainment
Mr. Madden hardly missed any auctions, and this time was no exception.
Sean Knight thought that Mr. Madden’s fortune was at least a million, but he seemed to enjoy every auction and never missed one.
Also present were the Ralph Brothers who were new stars in this business. Diana Smith was there too, laughing and flirting with one of Ralph’s brothers.
There were also many unfamiliar faces. It was apparent that, during Sean’s absence, many newcomers had joined while some old-timers had left.
When people saw Sean coming with two men, they were stunned. Mr. Madden smiled and came up to shake hands:
"Sean, I heard you made a fortune on a big sale recently; could you still be interested in the little stuff in these containers?"
"Of course, even small meat is still meat." Sean shook hands with him. "I heard you’ve been quite lucky lately, making quite a bit on several occasions?"
"No, I just occasionally make some pocket money."
The two laughed, and Sean greeted the others before starting to examine the containers.
There were five containers on display, both new and old.
Some people wanted to come over and talk to Sean, but seeing Jason Caldwell and Elijah Hastings on either side, they abandoned the idea.
Mr. Madden was initially quite vigilant, but seeing Sean’s attitude, he relaxed.
The old-timers knew Sean’s capabilities; he was at the level of "brother not on the scene, but the legend of the brother remains."
So when Sean came, Mr. Madden and the others were quite nervous, fearing their rice bowls would be snatched away.
After all, the plate was only so large.
But now, with Sean bringing two people, displaying an aloof demeanor, it was evident he was just here for fun. So, with a few shared glances, they all understood.
More and more people arrived, and the place soon had over twenty people present, chatting noisily and bustling.
Then the bald auctioneer and his assistant walked over, made a brief introduction:
"This is a container from China Shenghai; the consignee stored it in the freight yard but, after more than half a year, no one came to collect, so it’s up for auction. Alright, now open the container and observe for one minute!"
Sean smiled knowingly, feeling the familiar atmosphere once again.
The lock was cut, and the container door opened. Everyone looked with anticipation only for a chorus of "shit!" to resound around the room!
China was a manufacturing powerhouse, which many Americans knew.
So, items from China often had a good market.
That’s why people were so interested when the auctioneer mentioned the origin of the container.
But what was inside now?
The container was filled with bundles of waste paper boxes!
How could they not be disappointed?
A white man beside Sean was familiar with the waste paper box business and told the people nearby:
X"aste paper boxes are 120 dollars per ton. This container is, at most, filled with 10 tons of waste paper, which is worth just 1,200 dollars. It doesn’t look like a profit!"
While he said so, some people who heard the professional opinion shrugged and decided not to bid.
However, some people, especially those who had heard or seen Sean bid on a container filled with waste paper boxes before, and that he had actually found two antiques in it!
Although Sean had kept the fact quiet at the time, it eventually leaked out.
So now, those who had heard the story were wondering if there might be something hidden in this container too?
Ralph’s brother, who was quicker on the draw, said loudly:
"Who would spend several thousand dollars on freight to ship 1,000 dollars’ worth of waste paper over such a long distance? There must be something in here!"
Then his mouth was covered by Ralph!
You dimwit!
Some people suddenly realized, immediately thinking it made sense, and eagerly prepared to try their luck.
Mr. Madden went to Sean and asked:
"Sean, are you going to bid?"
Sean shook his head, saying:
"I think the risk is too high in this container. There’s no need."
His gaze fell on the second container.
It was clear he was waiting for the next one.
Madden breathed a sigh of relief but also felt somewhat disappointed.
Since when did he begin to deliberately avoid bidding against Sean Knight?
Was it because he feared Sean’s financial strength or because Sean might have a good eye for finding great items, so the things he didn’t bid on might not be valuable?
In the end, Madden psyched himself up, regained some confidence and decided to bid anyway!
Since it was a waste paper box, the starting price was only 100:
"100 dollars, 100 dollars, any increase? If you don’t bid, you’re losing out! This gentleman bids 200 dollars, 200 dollars, 200 dollars, any more bids? This gentleman bids 300 dollars, 300 dollars..."
Although the bald auctioneer tried hard, and there were a few bidders, everyone was cautious, and the price only reached 800 dollars after three minutes.
Old Madden suddenly made a move:
"One thousand five hundred dollars!"
This time, the bald auctioneer got excited, and since Old Madden was good at picking up deals, others would definitely follow. So, he tried even harder to say:
"One thousand five hundred dollars, the aging yet handsome Mr. Madden bids one thousand five hundred dollars, any increase? One thousand five hundred dollars, one thousand five hundred dollars..."
As expected, once Madden made a move, Diana immediately followed:
"Two thousand dollars!"
And Ralph didn’t want to be left behind:
"Two thousand three hundred dollars!"
Soon, the price soared to five thousand dollars!
At this point, the bidding atmosphere not only didn’t subside, but it was rising even more!
Six thousand dollars, seven thousand dollars, eight thousand dollars, ten thousand U.S. dollars!
At this point in the bidding, the leading bidders seemed to be quarrelsome, as if competing for something!
Sean was speechless!
There really was nothing but waste paper boxes inside!
He could already imagine the winner’s expression when they emptied all the waste paper later!
Madden gave up at 13,000 U.S. dollars, still boasting that there was nothing good in it and telling Ralph to eat shit.
Ralph had been on a winning streak recently. The three brothers had found many good items and made a lot of money, so he was particularly generous today.
In the end, he defeated another bidder and won the container for 15,500 dollars.
The bald auctioneer and his assistant moved on to the second container, and the Ralph Brothers began to unpack.
As soon as the second container was opened, everyone let out an excited cry.
Neatly stacked piles of wood filled the container.
The types of wood were different, and their uses varied. Most of them were unfamiliar.
Sean’s gaze fell on a small cardboard box behind the wood.
If you just looked at the wood, it wouldn’t be worth much.
But seeing the contents of the box, Sean guessed that the wood must have a great use!
There wasn’t much to see with the wood, so the bidding started quickly.
"The starting price is 1,000 dollars... "
As soon as the bald auctioneer announced the reserve price, someone immediately raised the bid:
"Three thousand dollars!"
This price was obviously too low. Someone would soon make an offer of 5,000 dollars, and Sean raised his hand:
"Eight thousand dollars!"
The bald auctioneer was even more excited. He recognized Sean, who usually didn’t bid, but once he did, he usually found something good!
This time, the price was stable!
