Chapter 1489: Chapter 710 Found the Clothing Fragments_2
"Are we already near the seaside?" Douglas Cooper asked in a low voice, "Where did these fish bones come from?"
Sean Knight looked around but still detected no trace of Cheryl Suweton’s presence, which somewhat reassured him.
The hall was surrounded by more than a dozen cave entrances of various sizes leading into unknown directions. Sean and his team had descended from one of these entrances. Sean guessed that this place must be where the monsters gathered to feed.
They must have places to rest and hide as well.
As Sky Eye scanned over the cave entrances, Sean quickly identified one with fresh traces. He pointed and commanded,
"Let’s head in that direction!"
Elijah Hastings and the others followed without a word.
Passing through the small cave entrance, the interior corridor widened progressively, yet it remained an irregular trapezoid shape, larger at the top and smaller at the bottom. Sean surmised that this was due to these monsters preferring to hang and crawl from the ceiling, which had caused this shape over time.
Not far along, a monster scurried out of a small hole on the side of the cave, attempting to flee but was promptly killed by Elijah.
After that, monsters appeared sporadically, either fleeing or attacking, but none escaped their inevitable doom.
This was the third time Sean reloaded bullets for the trio.
Fortunately, there was enough space; even if they fought for ten years, Sean’s bullets would suffice.
Worst comes to worse, they could always switch firearms.
Finally, they arrived at a subterranean sea—or rather, an underground sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean outside.
About a dozen monsters were by the seaside, catching fish and collecting plants like seaweed.
Their arrival startled the monsters; some dashed into the sea, others scurried to the nearest cave.
More of them, emitting unpleasant cries, charged at Sean and his team!
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Accompanied by the monsters’ shrieks, they were greeted not only with bullets but also with military thorns.
Due to the quantity of monsters, the pistols weren’t enough to eliminate them all before they charged. The last three monsters were stabbed to death by Sean Knight, Elijah Hastings, and Douglas Cooper.
All of them used their military thorns to slice open the monsters’ bellies, discovering no human flesh inside.
"They might not have reached the level of eating human flesh," Douglas speculated.
"Regardless, none of these creatures can be spared," Elijah said through gritted teeth.
He had barely avoided being bitten by one of the monsters earlier, and looking at those sharp teeth, Elijah felt that he needed to reminisce about the struggles and sweetness of life.
When was the last time he had been injured?
Had he become too pampered until now?
They pursued the creatures without regard to size. It seemed the monsters had realized they were no match for Sean and fled quickly.
However, no matter where they tried to escape, Sean’s Sky Eye could locate them. The number of monsters dwindled, and all the while, Sean detected no sign of Cheryl Suweton.
Indeed, this was good news.
In the end, Sean and his team exterminated all the visible monsters. The underground cave fell into a grave silence.
"It doesn’t make sense..." Douglas frowned, "We should have searched the entire cave system by now and yet, no trace of Cheryl Suweton..."
He didn’t finish his sentence, but his expression revealed his thoughts; he feared the worst for Cheryl.
"Let’s keep looking," Elijah said, pursing his lips.
Sean closed his eyes, replaying their actions from the moment they entered the large underground hall to their eventual return to it.
When he opened his eyes, he carefully inspected the entrances on the wall again.
They had checked each one that showed any sign, leaving none unexplored.
Suddenly, Sean looked up.
He noticed a small opening in the ceiling, just big enough for a person to squeeze through.
That opening was very dry, unlike the signs of monster traffic.
But Sean knew they couldn’t dismiss even the slightest possibility.
"Boost me up there!" Sean pointed upwards.
At three meters high, Elijah and Lincoln Harrington squatted, ready to cup their hands together, and as Sean took a running leap, they caught his feet and hoisted him upward with a strong push!
Sean soared, reaching out to grasp the cave entrance, then, clutching the protruding rocks on the cave wall, he climbed through.
The entrance ascended less than a meter before turning sharply to the right.
After making sure the coast was clear, Sean lowered a rope and pulled Elijah up, who then took over his position.
Unlike the other corridors, this one remained quite narrow, passable only by crawling.
After thirty some meters, the passage was blocked by several stones.
The stones were wedged in tightly and wouldn’t have moved without Sean’s immense strength.
Moving the stones aside revealed the remaining part of the cave—a burst of hot air mixed with red light and moisture rushed through.
Below was a pool of molten lava and patches of seawater visible at the stone’s edge.
There were only a few dozen square feet of solid ground.
And there, on that limited space, were two monsters, holding a fish near the lava, "roasting" it!
Startled by Sean and his team’s descent, the monsters recoiled, dropping the fish into the lava, where it quickly ignited into flames.
The creatures retreated incessantly until they were at the edge of the lava’s reach.
Sean noticed these two were smaller than those outside, visibly more aged through Sky Eye’s vision.
