Chapter 1486: Chapter 709: Sinister Fate—Unknown Creature_2
But some time ago, explorers discovered a site on the island that might be from the Stone Age.
Although it had not received official recognition yet, the news drew many adventurers eager to search for traces of the past.
Cheryl Suweton and her team were among them. Originally, it was a rather common exploration mission, one could even say that the tourism aspect outweighed the exploration.
But no one expected Cheryl and her team to disappear here.
The island’s transportation wasn’t very developed. As they neared their destination, the road had already vanished. The off-road vehicle plunged into the knee-deep bushes.
This area was in the northwest of Northern Europe, already close to the Arctic Circle, with white snow capping the high mountains, the wild grass yellowing, and signs of human activity fading, with the occasional wild animal visible crossing through the bushes.
"According to the geographical coordinates, it should be right here."
Elijah Hastings parked the off-road vehicle near a pile of rubble.
From the traces on the ground, it seemed many cars had stopped here before, and there were signs of human activity. Nearby, there were many footprints belonging to both men and women, some uncollected garbage, and remnants of a bonfire that had died out.
Sean Knight activated his Sky Eye and quickly found the traces of Cheryl Suweton’s presence nearby.
The pile of rubble indeed looked like an early human settlement. Some polished stone tools were discarded to the side. There were also signs of digging on the ground.
If viewed from above, one could see that the arrangement of the rubble was relatively orderly, indicative of man-made stacking.
Wild grass grew thick among the rubble, and some stones had disintegrated, suggesting that the construction of this stone pile was a matter from long ago.
Below the soil of the rubble pile were some ash pits, and within the soil, there were remnants of ossified fossils. Scattered stone tools lay around, but there was nothing of value left worth excavating.
There were no signs of a struggle nearby. No one was wounded or killed here. Cheryl’s footprint trail ultimately disappeared among the tracks of the cars.
Sean was certain that Cheryl must have left this place safely; even if she had gone missing, this wasn’t where she vanished.
"Let’s go to that mountain cave," Sean said as he eyed the car tracks, which indeed led in the direction of the cave described by the equipment store boss.
At that moment, several more cars arrived at the site.
Seven or eight people got out of the cars, a few of them carrying instruments and heading directly toward the ruins.
Several others approached Sean and his companions.
"Are you here looking for Princess Kuroya too?" The one who spoke up was a tall and handsome man, somewhat resembling the guardian of the mummified Pharaoh’s spirit in the Mummy War.
"Yes, but we haven’t found anything," Sean replied, maintaining a courteous demeanor despite his frustration, considering these people were also searching for Cheryl.
Having said that, he got into the car; Elijah and the two others also got in, and the vehicle started, preparing to leave.
"The last laugh will definitely be ours. Don’t hold out hope! The reward will be ours!" shouted a short man from behind the tall one, straining his voice at the departing off-road vehicle.
The off-road vehicle moved on, Douglas Cooper lowered the car window and gave those behind a defiant middle finger.
"Team Leader, where are they going?" The short man was indifferent to Douglas’s provocative action and asked the tall man.
"I don’t know. They didn’t linger here, so they must have found another clue. Let’s search the nearby area and see," replied the tall man.
Guided by Sean, the off-road vehicle followed the tracks through several twists and turns, pressing a deep imprint into the grassland.
The resilient wild grass slowly sprang back up after being flattened by the passing vehicle, looking as if nothing had happened.
"This is the place!" Sean suddenly declared.
The coordinates they arrived at were now close to the cave.
The tracks Sean and his team were following had signs of stopping here before turning back.
After the four of them got out of the car, they walked down the slope.
They were now near the seaside, and the biting cold wind carried with it the moist, salty stench of the sea.
None of them was wearing particularly thick clothes, but after being tempered by spiritual energy, their resistance to the cold was much stronger than ordinary people’s, and even Douglas, the least able among them, managed to keep up.
Light footprints extended all the way to halfway up the hill. Sean and his team followed them down.
Here the loose soil was replaced by hard white rock.
Years of exposure to the humid sea wind caused a layer of salt crust to form on the rocky surfaces.
When they reached halfway up the hill, they came across a cave entrance hidden among the jumbled rocks.
The entrance had once been quite large, at least four to five meters wide and two to three meters high.
At some point, a collapse had occurred as a result of some kind of impact. Fallen rocks had partially blocked the entrance, and the now accessible size was only a third of the original.
Sean’s Sky Eye was still active, allowing him to see that not only humans, but also other animals such as sheep, had frequented this entrance.
Cheryl’s presence was here too; Sean couldn’t mistake it.
"Let’s eat something and prepare before we go in," Sean said, not allowing them to enter right away. Through his Sky Eye, he couldn’t see the end of the cave.
Inside, the cave was winding with vast spaces and many forks. So Sean knew the upcoming exploration would be challenging.
Elijah and the rest immediately took out convenience foods from their backpacks and began their meal.
