Chapter 1424: Chapter 688: Picking Up a Treasure, So Tiring!
When Sean Knight and his team arrived at the military fort, it was relatively quiet.
After parking the car, Elijah Hastings asked the team member who came along with them,
"Sam Baker, has anyone come here in the past few days?"
"Yesterday, a backpacker came to visit. Following your instructions, Captain Hastings, we told him that the place had been rented and was currently off-limits, so the backpacker left."
Elijah Hastings turned to Sean Knight and said,
"Our Sam Baker, a college student who enlisted; he studied Russian, and his home is in the northern border. After his service ended, he was originally translating in Khorgos before he joined us here."
"What a talent!" Sean Knight said with a laugh, "Let’s have him work first. If our castle has minerals, we’ll definitely need staffing later, and having someone who knows Russian will certainly be very useful!"
Sam Baker nodded with a smile, his expression clearly showing interest in the permanent position Sean Knight mentioned.
"Just keep watching for now. When it’s time to staff the place later, just let us know ahead of time," Elijah Hastings said, "We’ll go inside and have a look around."
Sam Baker nodded then returned to the entrance, shouldering his gun.
Here, like the castle area, a big iron door had been erected on the small road leading to the highway. Once locked, a couple of guards by the door and a sign were enough to let any visitors know what was going on.
Elijah Hastings led the team into the military fort, while Sean Knight and Viola walked in leisurely.
This time, bringing Viola along was also a test for her.
If she could pass this test, then the matters that followed would be easier to handle. Whether she stayed with him, became a manager here, or went back to attend university domestically, it was all up to her.
If she did not pass, then, unfortunately, she’d just be a decoration.
Although Sean Knight was fickle, he was not without principles.
Once inside the military fort, several team members at Elijah Hastings’ command had already started knocking and probing.
"I think the focus should still be on the ramps," Sean Knight remarked: "The visible houses probably can’t hide much. Who knows how many times they’ve been searched. So it’s these inconspicuous places that should really be scrutinized."
As he spoke, he casually pointed towards one of the ramps.
Elijah Hastings’ eyes lit up, and immediately, he led the team members, tools in hand, towards the ramp.
Others might not know, but he was very clear!
At this time, their boss definitely wouldn’t aim without cause!
"Once we’re back, we should buy a few of those single-person radars," Sean Knight suggested as he walked and looked around,
"I remember seeing in a short video that these radars are now used in agriculture for pest control, bird prevention, and night hunting. Drones can even carry them.
"Such devices can’t be used domestically for underground exploration. But abroad, for exploring sites like this, they should be effective, right?"
"I think they should be," Elijah Hastings, although originally a Special Forces soldier who was proficient with radios, didn’t know much about radars.
Sean Knight was just talking. Such matters would still need to be verified by professionals back home.
At that moment, the team members had levered up a stone slab used as a step.
Soon, after two or three stone slabs were levered up, a square rock underneath was revealed.
Sean judged Viola’s expression, finding her merely curious with no other emotional reaction.
"Shall we continue prying?" a team member asked Elijah Hastings.
"Pry up that square rock," Elijah Hastings commanded, having followed Sean on multiple treasure hunts and now beginning to see a pattern, he pointed at the rock and said, "That rock... is suspicious!"
Although the team members lacked experience, they knew to trust Elijah Hastings. Together, they levered the square rock.
As soon as the rock was pried up, a dark tunnel entrance beneath was revealed.
"Haha, there’s a tunnel!" Elijah Hastings laughed, turning his head to Sean Knight, "Boss, you sure pointed us in the right direction!"
"Just a coincidence," Sean chuckled, "Let’s not go down yet. Wait until the air inside circulates a bit."
The team members were astounded, but they didn’t stop their actions; instead, they cleared the stone slabs to the side to facilitate continued exploration later.
Just then, a team member ran into the military fort from outside and reported to Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings:
"Boss, Captain Hastings, there’s a person claiming to be a university professor at the entrance. He’s leading a group of students who want to tour the military fort. He says he knows you..."
Sean Knight immediately remembered the professor he had communicated with during an exchange with Lincoln Harrington.
However, it definitely wasn’t feasible to let them in now.
Elijah Hastings glanced at Sean Knight and instructed team member Sam Baker,
"Tell the professor that it is not convenient for visits or research now. Ask him to come back later."
Sean Knight said nothing, which was a tacit approval.
Sam Baker understood, nodded to Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings, and headed out.
The military fort was only 200 meters from the entrance. Sean Knight could hear the professor arguing over there, but Sam Baker consistently refused, his tone firm yet reasonable.
Sean Knight thought this man truly was a talent.
A while later, Elijah Hastings took a flare from his backpack, lit it, and tossed it down.
The bottom was not deep, only about three meters. As the flare landed, it continued burning on the ground. It was evident that, although damp, there was no water below, and oxygen had already filled the space.
"Let’s go down," Elijah said, "Let’s see what’s inside— there has to be something good hidden if there’s a tunnel."
