Chapter 1402: Chapter 680 The Ancient Legend in the Ancient Castle_3

"Hello," the middle-aged man greeted.

Sean Knight was surprised, the man was speaking Chinese!

"Hello!" Sean Knight quickly shook hands with him.

"I once studied at Harbin Institute of Technology," the man said with a smile, "I love it there! Especially their red sausages!"

Well, regardless, he was indeed complimenting our stuff!

"How did you know I’m Chinese?" Sean Knight asked with some confusion. After all, many foreigners around the world can’t tell the difference between Chinese people, Korean people, and Japanese people.

"I stayed there for three years," the middle-aged scholar raised his finger and said, "I’ve interacted with international students from other East Asian countries. I can tell you’re Chinese, it’s intuition."

Alright, maybe my aura is somewhat unique?

"This is a military fortress from centuries ago in our country," the middle-aged scholar gestured towards the bastion behind him and said, "Our current research project is this, and I found out about this relatively intact one through lots of inquiries.

However, this bastion is somewhat ordinary. For the friends coming from China, from friends who’ve come from China, I would like to ask, what were the ancient military fortresses like over there?"

Alright, this guy hit Sean Knight’s blind spot.

Sean Knight immediately looked towards Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington.

Elijah Hastings didn’t speak but smiled and stepped back, letting Lincoln Harrington step forward.

"The ancient military fortresses in Ancient China were quite different from this type of bastion," Lincoln Harrington said:

"Comparatively speaking, the size of ancient Chinese fortresses varied greatly. The smaller ones were simply called fortresses, similar to today’s watchtowers, with earth and stone high walls, parapets, and walkways on top... The larger ones, although they might also be called fortresses, were essentially equivalent to fortified cities, almost like small cities..."

As he spoke, he started drawing in the sand nearby.

The scholar and his students immediately gathered around Lincoln Harrington, watching closely.

Sean Knight smiled, his team really was full of talent.

However, this was perfect timing since there was no one at the fortress, he walked over leisurely to conduct an "on-site survey."

Entering the castle, Sean Knight found it was not as he expected; the fortress didn’t seem to have had many visitors. Inside, it was overgrown with weeds, with some fresh trampled marks likely made by the group of students.

So, it looked like no one had been here for a long time, at least not inside.

In the center of the interior of the fortress was vacant land, which was probably used for assembling troops, and then there was a ramp leading up to the fortress walls. This ramp was built with stone slabs shaped like stairs, but looking at the marks, they seemed seldom used.

Near the fortress wall, there were stone-built houses with inner heights of about two meters or so, tall individuals would have to stoop to enter. Windows and doors were naturally long gone, and inside, there were even animal droppings, which smelled quite strong.

Sean Knight frowned, didn’t go in, just glanced inside, then stepped out and walked up the ramp.

Then he stopped.

Elijah Hastings followed Sean Knight, and seeing him stop, he also stopped.

Without the boss saying anything, it wasn’t Elijah Hastings’ place to ask.

However, by the look on Sean Knight’s face, he was likely to have spotted something unusual.

Sean Knight paused for about half a minute, then continued upward.

Reaching the top of the fortress wall, he could see the outside situation.

From this higher vantage point, he had assumed that the people defending here back in the day would have used bows and arrows, but something he just found made him surprised.

He didn’t expect them to be so advanced back then!

This bastion, he could rent it.

Sean Knight walked around the outer perimeter of the fortress wall and then descended via another ramp, circling to the entrance and walked out.

"...Ancient Chinese military fortresses were always integrated with military and civilian populations, housing soldiers as well as settler civilians and laborers. They generally also had agricultural functions..." Lincoln Harrington continued to share historical knowledge with the group.

Sean Knight smiled and then took off in a different direction.

He walked all the way to the edge of the tunnel and then stood there, looking down as if deep in thought.

Of course, he wasn’t actually thinking but "looking" downward.

From the first slope they encountered, Sean Knight had used Sky Eye to detect a tunnel. Inside the blocked entrance of the tunnel, there was a box with its lid open, revealing several loose-loaded muzzle-loading firearms. Next to the box were several buckets of black gunpowder and lead bullets.

He had followed the path above the tunnel and then "saw" that the end of the approximately 1.5-meter-high tunnel led to a large warehouse filled with numerous boxes neatly packed with flintlock rifles, the kind with bayonets.

Although these items were somewhat rusted by now, their overall condition still looked to be about 70% new.

The preservation was probably due to the local environment.

In addition to the boxes, there was ammunition, gunpowder, and a small number of cold weapons like knives and axes.

Because the location was quite secluded, the ground above was overgrown with weeds and had even sprouted shrubbery and small trees, so no one came here, which is why it remained undiscovered.

This was only possible in the Far East. If it were in the densely populated regions of Europe, it would likely have been discovered long ago by those treasure hunters wielding metal detectors.

Sean Knight noted the location and then turned back.

Luckily, Lincoln had finished his lecture, and the professor was clasping Lincoln’s hands with a smile, thanking him profusely.

At that moment, Lincoln’s face was a bit flushed, as he repeatedly said it was nothing.

Sean Knight could see that several female students were gazing at Lincoln with affectionate eyes, their admiration quite evident.

Lincoln, seeing Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings smiling in the distance, hurried over.

"Not bad at all, quite a credit to you." Elijah Hastings said with a laugh, "I knew that stuff you researched while on mission in Northwest China would come in handy one day."

"I was just curious at that time; I didn’t expect there would be so many remnants of ancient castles left over from ancient times." Lincoln smiled, as he said this to Sean, "There’s still a lot of them well preserved, which I find quite interesting, so I did some research on the side."

"Boss, are we heading back?" Elijah Hastings asked.

Sean glanced at the students preparing to leave by car, their gazes still occasionally drifting their way, and said:

"Make a phone call to Douglas and tell him we want to rent this military fortress... for six months." A shorter period could raise suspicions about what was dug up, but a longer rental would keep others out, allowing them to search for treasure at leisure.

That was Sean Knight’s plan.

Back at the castle, Sean and his group waited for Douglas Cooper and his team to handle the arrangements.

To Sean’s surprise, a tour group arrived on a bus. Looking at the people getting off, they didn’t seem to be Russian. The tour guide, a plump middle-aged woman, was explaining to the group:

"This place was once a castle belonging to the nobility of the Tsarist era. Later, legend has it that the Ice Queen came here to make a deal with the nobility.

The noble refused, and then the Ice Queen cast a spell to turn the castle into an ice fortress—just like the movie ’Frozen’..."

Alright, Sean knew that although there was indeed an Ice Queen in Russian folklore, she was nothing like Princess Elsa. The Ice Queen was essentially a figure of cold and cruelty, while Princess Elsa was beautiful, and they were completely different!

Sean felt that this tour guide had just spoiled the main character of ’Frozen’!

That’s unacceptable! She can’t be allowed to come here in the future! Otherwise, the kids would cry!

Of course, that was just a joke. The main reasons were for secrecy and the safety of the treasure.

Once the procedures were completed, the place definitely needed to be enclosed. Then put up a sign, "Private Property, No Trespassing!"

Otherwise, it would be difficult to search for treasure!
